since Im new at all this I have no idea what to expect. We've been told that the Navy will pay a moving company to move up to 5000 lbs of our stuff. We were also told they will pay to move one car. Ok heres my questions: my grandma was an army wife for like 20 years so maybe its different but she says that our car has to pass an inspection to get a pass of some type to be on the base. Is there still an inspection? Will The Navy pay to have our car moved with us? If they do pay to move the car do they also pay for airfare?if there is an inspection what do they look for? My husband is a newly enlisted E1 can we really have 5000 lbs of stuff? We have two kids. What happens between the time the movers take our stuff and it arrives at our new place? I read some where that there are hospitatlity kits we can check out for two weeks while we wait for our stuff. What is that? Do Navy families move as often as Army families? My grandparents moved all over the world, a new place at least every year often times sooner. I feel like Im blind I have no idea what to expect. The recruiter told us so much that we've already found out isn't true. We've had to spend almost $800 in issued stuff and uniforms which the recruiter said is a cost that the Navy would cover. Well he said we'd be responsible for no more than $200 of everything issued and the uniforms. He lied so much about everything how can he sleep at night?

The navy will only move your car if you are moving oconus or overseas whether it be to Hawaii or out of the country. We moved from SC to CA and they wouldnt even move a car for us....so plan on driving there. Im not sure about inspection, but I know you have to be current on insurance, registration, and in California pass a smog test to get stickers. There is hospitality kits and you would go through the Navy & Marine Corps relief center or whatever it is called. They have microwaves, furniture, silverware, etc... to help you out. Hopefully someone else will have the answers to the other questions. Best of luck to you, moving is horrible!

oh my gosh thats really sucks! I guess I'll have to leave my car here and pray someone can sell it for us. I would never trust it to drive me that far. I live in washington state and will be moving to Great Lakes, Il and its winter time. We have a camaro ( not by choice ). Im so glad you told me that. As for our insurance we carry limited liability. we could step it up if we have to. and our car didn't pass the smog test but we live in an area that doesn't require it for tags.

ok one more question since we would have to drive there do they help out with hotel and gas or is that all on us?

They will pay you back I believe but you could ask for advanced pay to cover that cost. Noyt sure exactly how much they will pay you back for this though

You have to pay up front for the hotel & gas unfortunately, but they do reimburse you....we have a camaro as well! fun as far as insurance costs go ;) You shouldnt have to step up the insurance, Bill only had liability on his old camero. Now he got a new one and wants to protect his baby!! haha

We actually made money from doing a partial dity move when I moved from Arizona to South Carolina, which would be moving some of your stuff in your car. You weigh the car empty, and weigh it full, and they will pay you for your luggage and the weight of everything you are moving.

Yes they pay you perdiem and DLA for your dh at 100% you at 75% and your kids if under 12 are 50% over 13 is 75& too.
You will probably make out on the move if you stay at a days inn or the like instead of Hilton etc...
Your furniture will go in storage if it beats you to IL. You can do the hospitality kits we never felt the need.
Like Rach said partial Ditys are great!!!
Especially if you are over your weight and for a large family 500lbs doesn't go far

We are a family of 5 and since the only appliances we had at the time we weighed our stuff was a washer and dryer. Our total weight was 4700. That is with our heavy ass table, a sectional, four beds and mattresses. You never know for sure. We didn't get paid for our move to great lakes. They did pay for us to move to San Diego, but the only paid for dh to drive the car here. They did pay for dd and I to fly out. Our stuff arrive two weeks after dh got here.
Good luck with your move.

is great lakes his duty station or just where hes going to school? If its school how long will he be there? As for paying for uniforms yes you do end up paying for them out of your check while in boot..the navy never gives you anything for free. as for how much the navy will pay for you to move there will depend if hes there for school and how long hes there and such. Also if hes there for school the navy won't give you any money for him to get there since hes already there so if he comes home to help you move they won't pay for that. I can give you more info on this with some of the answers I have ask..dh does this type of stuff for the navy so when I ask him a question like this..I get the 20 questions from him...lol

Our last PCS was from Washington to here in Great Lakes. The military moved all of our stuff (which is how we normally do it) and we drove. The drive wasn't too bad at all. We got our stuff about 2 and a half weeks after we got here which was the longest we have ever had to wait for it. We did buy a small pot and pan set etc so we could grocery shop and cook since we got our house right away

edited cuz I didnt know either if it was TAD or PCS as well. I don't know requirements on that since he is already here. How long is his school for? I believe the navy will only pay if he is out here longer then 6 months or some such for school etc. Otherwise I think it'll be out of pocket...

his school is in for 10 months. we talked at lenght with the recruiter about this he said the Navy will hire a moving company they will call us set up time to come get our stuff and then take it to where ever they are told to. This seems to be what im understanding from you guys too. I don't have a problem driving there just I don't know if I'd trust my car to make it that far. Its a good car and hasn't had any real problems thus far (knock on wood) but its kinda old ( 91') and not a comfortable place for my kids so sit for hours on end. Plus if I run into any type of ice or snow I wll be stuck there on the road. All by myself. about the weight limit we don't have very much stuff and we were married when he enlisted so I think we'll be well under 8000 lbs. Our kids are 6 1/2 and almost 3

Info coming from my dh...Ok so his school is over 180 days so they will pay to move you and the kids to GL, as far as the car if your worried about it trade it in for a new car before you leave or drive it there..because if your worried about snow..you will see it in GL. as for the moving company I wouldn't count on them to contact you, your sh needs to go to personnal property and get the move set up and hes going to have to do that at "A" school, it can't be done through bootcamp. You will not see DLA because the navy won't pay for that while hes going to school its only for PCS and since this isn't a PCS move. Buit you will get travel pay. Just remember that they won't give you any $ for dh because hes already there. Also you need to have him find out that if his "A" school will let him live with you and the kids when you get there, some do and some don't. I hope this info helps..I know I've given you alot of info here and if you have anymore questions please just let us all know.

we tried to trade it in before he left for boot camp. We wanted to get in on the soldiers and sailors relief act. Our credit is way bad. One reason we decided joining the Navy would be a good idea. Maybe someone will buy it from us and we can get a loan from the Navy credit union. Any of you use it? Is it good? Wow you are all so wonderful. im so glad to have some real answers to my questions!

yah, I use Navy Federal and we are overall happy with them. We havent had any serious problems with them and they handle our disputes for us very promptly and we also have a car loan through them....I definitely recommend them

I hope you find all the answers. We had an 89 Camaro a few yrs ago. I loved it. It was old, but it still had power. How much do you plan on selling it for? We were thinking about getting a second car since we'll need it when he gets out.

the limits are very low for loans at NFCU unless they have changed.
We have had loans with them but they have tighter requirements and such.
But all in all I love them they are our bank even though here the closest one is 45 minutes away :(
We have never had problems with them

Loans through Navy federal are good but can be hard to get. Especially with bad credit. My car loan is through a credit union out here in IL because it has lower rates then Navy federal offered. There are alot of car places now a days that work with you if you have bad credit. Your interest will be way high but it is a start and a car loan is a great way to start rebuilding your credit issues. I would look around and keep trying to trade it in. Hyundais are good cars, pretty cheap and have an excellent warranty. I learned from when we had awful credit that even though it sounds strange it is easier to get a new car loan then a used car loan....Then once you pay on it for a year or so you can try to refinance it thru Navy federal etc for a lower interest rate once it has rebuilt some of your credit...

We do bank with Navy federal and love them. I use them for almost everything and would have for my car loan but I got a better deal...

NFCU is ok...our credit isn't on the best of sides and we were never able to get a loan from them, but USAA didn't think twice about it...(we have accounts at both banks) now both car loans are with USAA aswell as our insurance and we are very happy and please with USAA.

Well credit isn't everything with NFCU
Cause we have excellent credit well over 750 when they pulled it for the car last month.
Our one denial was cause dh only had 4 months left on AD and he was reenlisting but not that early cause of the SRB so they refused to give it to us :rolleyes
And their CC are low limits you have to be an upper O to get a good limit

our credit is so bad. its just awful but I guess we kinda did it to our selves. we didnt check out all our options before we filed bankruptcy. our house was going to foreclose and we wanted to save it. my parents said it would be the best thing for us so with out thinking more about it we saved the money and filed. It totally messed stuff up. our lawyer was stupied and told us some wrong information which made things worse and we ended up havingto file again like 6 months later just to redo the papers then we changed the way we were filing so on our credit report it looks like we filed 3 time in 8 months. But were hoping if we have a big enough down payment we will be able to get a loan.

and were selling our '91 camaro for $2000 its got nothing wrong with it. Its a nice blue. I like it. its fun to drive. lots of power. my husband is upset about it. He loves camaros but we just can;t use it as a family car(our family car broke and we sold it) and I don't like to drive it in snow and ice.
