Hiya all!

I'm moving to the Norfolk area, however it makes sense to actually get an apartment closer to Portsmouth right now. Anyone know of any good apartments in the area?

I looked at houses in all the cities around here... and I wouldn't live in Portsmouth or Norfolk either. But....there are lots of apartments around. If you were coming up earlier, there is a book of nothing but apartments and condos out each month.

I'd keep away from Portsmouth definately and there are a lot of bad areas in Norfolk. Not that you're looking to live in Newport News.. but NN overall is terrible.

I live in Chesapeake.

ok well it all depends on what you like! i lived in portsmouth for about 6-7 years and then i moved to chesapeake and i have lived here for about 4-5 years. all the areas around here have their "good & bad" parts of town! you just have to really look! i think you should be able to look at www.apartmentguide.com or www.apartments.com now if the rent is really low then that is more than likely in a "bad" part of town! but i think that you should come out here and look to see if you like the different areas. give me and idea on the price range and i will see if i can come up with a couple ideas. maybe not just apartments i might be able to see if their are any houses for rent. just let me know if i can be of any help.

I'd stay away from Pourtsmouth and Norfolk too!! I was terrified when we drove through Pourtsmouth, and Norfolk's convenient to the base, BUT the city has A LOT of bad areas! LOOK around first!

I just came from Norfolk in Dec. We lived off Terminal Blv in Norfolk. I lived there for 4 yrs and the only think we every had to deal with was when we first moved there someone broke in our car. THat was it. The only problem I had with my apartments was dumb ass neighbors who played there loud ass music. But your gonna get there wherever you go. Don't get me wrong I hated Norfolk with a passion but it's not as bad as everyone thinks or says. There are townhomes that my firend used to live in off Cheasapke blv called Mariners Watch. They are really nice and the community is nice and your only 15mins from the base. Good luck!!

I'd stay away from Portsmouth. JMHO You also want to think about traffic and tunnels. If you work or go to school you may not want to deal with tunnnel traffic on a daily basis.

I live in the Hickory area of Chesapeake. BUt, my oldest is in HS...so that was our biggest determining factor. We really wanted our son to go to Hickory High or Great Bridge. Years ago we rented a house in Virginia Beach. That commute was over an hour for DH to get to the ship, now in Chesapeake it's not quite 30 minutes because we live near the expressway.

Just a few things to consider. Good Luck.

I live in Portsmouth. Old Towne and I love it. I had good luck using Craigs List when I was looking.

I have to agree with most of the ladies. I lived in Norfolk and dh ship was in P-town for awhile. Some parts are very scary. I didn't like norfolk either, which is why we choose the peninsula this time around.

Hi you guys. I have lived in Hampton Roads my entire life. I have lived in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Hampton and now Norfolk. There are good sections and bad sections of each and every city. In Portsmouth if you are in Churchland you are good. AND you can avoid the bad areas and a lot of tunal traffic if you learn the roads! Hampton has very few good areas I never liked it. Virginia Beach is good but EXPENCIVE! Chesapeake is good but they are really building it up out there so you are going to be dealing with a lot of traffic. I love living in Norfolk. I live in military housing and it is amazing. We have had some small issues but nothing that was extream. If anyone who is looking for a place in the area has questions please ask. I will be glad to look up the area that you are thinking about and tell you if it is a good area or not. Have fun house hunting!!!!!!!!!

I am moving to VA also around Jan. When I visited, I loved Portsmouth!! I guess that was the olde city area. What is wrong with Portsmouth? Additional question: I am a teacher, any advice on schools? I need a school where the art program is stable (not on the chopping block for budget cuts). Thanks!
