Tony is working on trying to get out of here early (the beginning of 2008 instead of mid 2009) He is really miserable at this command.. anyway...

For those of you who have been in South Carolina or Tenn... how is it? What will I hate about it there? Tony will be going to shore duty and I kind of want to stay in the south so that's what he is looking at atm. Since he is a nuke his shore duty billots are limited.

I live in Columbia SC but all my family is in Charleston so I know a good bit about the area. I don't know much about the actual military base or anything but if you have any specific questions about Charleston or any part of SC feel free to ask me!! Oh yeah, I loooove Charleston as well...it's a gorgeous city. Well parts of it :P

My husband lived in Charleston of course since that's where he went to school for the navy but I've never been there. He didn't like it all that much but he doens't hate it either.

I didn't love Charleston but I didn't hate it either..it was way better then here. That's probably going to be where we go for shore duty in 2008 too.

Well shit if it's better than here then I'm good lol I just hope he can pull off getting out of here. I assume he'll still be a first class when the time comes so I hope they have some good billots for him to choose from heh.

That is EXACTLY why I want to go south NOT north! I want to live somewhere we can afford to live.

I LOVE the convenience here, but the COL and housing is so high.

just remember that the COL is lower there and that means a lower BAH
we were very comfortable in housing but with the size family we have it wouldn't have been feasible to live on the economy

We don't even get Norfolk BH here... (EDITED TO CORRECT) I accidently looked at BAH without dependants lol The BAH in Charleston is only $60 less than we get now since we get the Newport News rate.

We're considering housing there if that's where we go, what's it like?

Yes Millington. Tony would either be a recruiter or a detailer.

It's looking more like SC anyway. Tony's detailer told him that with all his evals being EP's accross the board that he should have no problem being an A-school instructor there in 2008. Now all we need to hope is that his command allowes him out of his obligation early.

The housing there is old but in good shape to be old
We at the time had one kid and another on the way and they pushed hard for us to take a 4 bedroom. We had a huge yard, there are lots of parks on the base, it was very quiet there too, well other than the train lol.
The worst parts were the size/inconvience, the command SUCKED (NPTU) may be different since you guys are actually nukes.
I got really depressed during our 3.5 years there

All I know is Tony explained what it is like for an A-school instructor and it's a hell of a lot better than his scdedule now. They have been port and starboard duty for months and the command is keeping it that way for who knows how long, day after duty they are still at work until 6 or 7pm, my husband has duty every weekend and they treat the men and families like crap. I am really hoping for a decent shore duty. Of everything Tony can do he tells me that being an instructor is one of the better.

Sarah I think you are gonna run into this alot as it's how the sub world works for sea duty.

As far as being in Goose Creek it's not horrible, small town living with a 30-40 min commute to downtown. I did my little review of the area in the location thread if you want to read it.

My husband is on a pre com and thier schedule is ridiculous for the circumstances. His command is not exactly typical. There are guys there who are a couple years away from retirement, have been on several boats and are shocked at how awful it is. There is a lot more to it than just working hours. Several guys have tried to kill themselves and there are many more in the verge of breaking. There is stuff going on there that isn't right. That is part of the reason the boat is short on men... many have been sent off for severe depression. I also grew up in a militray family.

Thanks, I'll be sure to take a look at your review.
