View Full Version : going from Enlisted to Officer
SezzySue 07-20-2006, 02:03 PM I was wondering if either you or your SO had ever gone from being Enlisted to becoming an Officer. DH is thinking about doing it, but we don't know the best way for him to do it. I know he needs his degree, but after that then what. HOw likely is it he might actually make it?
Thanks
Sarah 07-20-2006, 02:17 PM Bill is probably going to go Officer. He would become a EHO(Environmental Health Officer). He is 3 credits away from his degree, and then he will be able to put his package in. It differs with different rates. I know there are sometimes age cutoffs as well. I know in Bill's case, he has to do this before he is 35 (he's 32 right now). Have your dh talk to his Command Career Councelor about it :)
SezzySue 07-20-2006, 02:27 PM I will have him when he gets home. He is only 22 so he has time, I just wasn't sure the way to go. He will get his degree in Electrical Engineering.
April 07-20-2006, 02:35 PM You do not have to have a degree. My friend went LDO and he has no degree. It really depends on which program he applies for.
SezzySue 07-20-2006, 02:38 PM Maybe it is different between branches but I am almost posative you have to have a degree to apply for it.
*Christy6* 07-20-2006, 04:18 PM Yes.... you dont need a degree.. but with being only 22 it is usually the way to go. There are programs where you can get a degree and have the military pay for it....
SezzySue 07-20-2006, 06:17 PM yes they are paying for our degrees right now
CoffeeGirl 07-20-2006, 06:47 PM yes they are paying for our degrees right now
NICE!:thumbsup :thumbsup
SezzySue 07-20-2006, 06:51 PM I sure love it, just pay for books is all.

Same here ;). Now, with Bill's job, he has to have a degree for him to be EHO. Some rates require it, some don't. It depends on what he wants to do.
*Christy6* 07-21-2006, 04:04 AM My dh did LDO and he didnt need a degree. That was also five years ago and things have changed since then. He is an EMO... He is now almost done getting his degree and they are paying for his schooling. The military is.. Not so much for him being an officer.. Just in the military.
LovelyBeth 07-23-2006, 08:36 AM Hubby went from enlisted to officer by getting an NROTC scholarship.
knockouttrish 07-24-2006, 10:38 PM If depends on what program you are trying for. I know that with the LDO, you ahve to have made bboard to be eligible for the LDO package. With the STA-21, it is different. My Dh is a career counselor on the submarine that he is attached to and that is the only reason that I know about that.
Tricia
My husband got his degree and then applied for OCS. He's a full line officer which means that he'll be able to take command one day.
With an LDO or Warrant Officer, you don't have to have a degree but you'll never be able to take command.

What age was he able to do this?
My husband received his commission in March of 2000 and he was 31 and turned 32 in Oct. that year.
Allen got his bachelors and Masters degree through tuition assistance. He went to college on his off time. The Navy paid for almost 100% of his classes and all we had to pay for was his books. I think there was one time where he went over the 12 credit hours allowed per year and we had to pay out of pocket for a class.

Yes in the airforce you do have to have a degree. My brother in-law is going into the airforce as an Officer and DH was thinking about it. It's different in the Navy they will put you through school to become an officer but AF you have to have a degree first. At least that is what they told us.
Breezy 07-25-2006, 07:23 PM good luck

True, very true! Maybe it's because we don't have warrant officers and such.
Shannon* 07-26-2006, 10:43 PM I'm not sure about the specifics of how he did it, but from what I understand... He went back to college for nuclear engineering, since he'd previously been a nuke on a sub, (with that experience, he said that his courses were cake) and went into the ROTC program which covered a large portion of his education. He still ended up with some school loans, but not many from what I understand. I can ask him more details if you'd like. :)
