Who here had/has a bassinet for their baby? Is it worth it or a waste of money? If you think it's a waste of money, what are the reasons? Thanks!!

ETA: If it makes any difference, it will be for the baby to sleep in our room at night since he won't be sleeping in the bed with us.

We had one for DD... she only used it for 3 months, because once they start raising their heads and pushing up, it's bye bye bassinet! It came in handy because she could be in my room with me when she was a newborn and didn't sleep through the night .. (didn't have room for the crib in our room) It was a really nice convertible one that made a changing table, rocking cradle and bedside sleeper... I don't think they're an absolute necessity though!

I was wondering about bassinets as well because my friend is having a baby and I wanted to get her something really nice. :thinking

we had a year old crib. it was nice because trent lasted longer in it than a bassinet. of course most of the time he was in bed with us but i would use it for when he took naps.

we used one for Cory but he got sobig so fast he had to be moved to his crib. I think they are nice but not a must have. For Lily we bought her a pack n' play with the bassinet. Her room was down stairs and ours was up. I was afraid to let her sleep wwwaaaayyyy down stairs. plus its a long walk down the stairs when it has to happen 3-4 times a night. So she slept with us in her bassinet until she was about 6 months. In that case it was so worth it!

My dad made one for us when I was preggers with my first son. It's BEAUTIFUL & something we will pass on when our babies have babies. I HIGHLY recommend a bassinet if your budget allows. They are nice because they are small enough to move to what ever room you may need it in at the moment. We moved ours to the living room in the morning back the bedroom at night. It would be a great gift & i'm sure your friend would get lots of use out of it. If anyone is considering a bassinet for yourself, but concerned with putting money into something you will only use for a few months, check out a gently used consignment shop :)

Our bassinet was wonderful! I'd put it by our bed when he was first born so I didn't even have to get up to nurse him. He was in it, I think, until about 5 or 6 months (it was a deep bassinet). So I totally recommend them :)

I had one for DD when she was born. It was wonderful at the time because she was a premie and so tiny. A crib just seemed TOO big at that time. I say go for it.

My bassinet was my grandmothers when she was a baby (so it is over 80 years old). Over 30 babies have used it in the family and it was finally mine when Brayden was on his way. He was an aweful sleeper so he didn't use it as much as I would like. But it is still nice to have. Our play pen also has a bassinet so that was good bc for the first 5 weeks we lived ina two-storey house so we kept that downstairs. But again he woul only sleep like 10 minutes at a time in either. Depends on the baby.

On a side note thank God he finally sleeps. Just started sleeping through t night at 9 months. I was a big challenge. But we finally made it.

A pack and play is a better option. They just grow out of bassinets too dang fast.

We did a bassinett for Jamison and will do it again for this little one...I breastfeed so it made it nice in the middle of the night not having to trip over things to get to the baby....I recomend it but it's a personal choice

I do not co-sleep so I always use a basinette for the first few months :)

This is the one I have (different fabric) :D It's STILL in my room even though no one is using it lol

we used one for both kids. I LOVED having a bassinet because we don't cosleep and the bassinet allowed for very easy access to the baby without me having to get up (which was very hard for the first few weeks since I had a c-section). I could just open my eyes and look over to check on them, or reach over next to the bed to help soothe them or whatever. They did grow out of it kind of fast (about 2-3 months for both of them) but it was still well worth the money, IMO. We used it quite a bit (every night and for some naps) during those 3 months. The convenience of having the baby so close was nice since they wake up so frequently at first. I am not a fan of pack and plays and have never used them for either kid, so the bassinet was the better option for us. I know some people use those co-sleeper things that attach to the bed, but the bassinet we had was a better option b/c I could lower the side to make it sort of like a cosleeper, then raise the side to make it a stand alone bassinet as the baby got older.

George had one of the 4 in 1 bassinets. To me, it was a waste of money, because he might have slept in it a handful of times. We also had a pack n play with the bassinet feature on the top... and a crib. For the most part, he was in bed with us, or in the bassinet feature of the pack and play. He just in the past few months or so has started sleeping in the crib.

this is the one we had except in green color. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=2636044

you can see in the pic how the side comes down. For the first few weeks, I put that side down like that and scooted it all the way against our bed, so the baby was within an arm's reach from me. I could just look over and them without having to get up. For feedings, I reached over, picked them up, brought them in the bed to feed them and change them, then back into their bed again. Then as they get older and move around more, you can put that side back up and move it away from the bed. :)

I completely agree. I used a pack in play for all my kids.

:thumbsup True! I got a pack and play instead a bassinet, I think it's a better option.

We never used one. I used my Pack-n-play in my room for both dd's and it worked out great. Plus I got way more use out of it since I could use it for all of my children for a couple years instead of months.

I borrowed a bassinete with Madison, good thing because she barely used it. For Hayden my mom found one at a garage sale and bought it cheap. It had barely been used. Hayden used it for a couple of months.

I did like having one though so that I didn't have to get up out of bed and stumble around the house. I needed one with Hayden anyhow since we weren't in a three bedroom yet and Madison was still in the crib. Once we moved Hayden went to his crib not long after.

My baby was big, so she would have exceeded the weight limits for a bassinet within a month or a month and a half, I believe (same with a pack 'n play). I had a co-sleeper which I used until she was able to sit up by herself (that's what the safety instructions said if I remember correctly or maybe that's when I felt she wasn't safe in it anymore). It looks like a playpen (and the regular ones do convert to a playpen...I say regular cuz they have mini ones that are smaller that don't convert) but one side drops down with a little lip left so the baby can't roll out of the it. It has straps and connects to your mattress so the co-sleeper can't pull away from the bed. So the baby has his/her own space so u won't roll over onto the baby or anything but is right next to you. http://www.armsreach.com/ U can use it with that side up too so it's fully encolsed. It's portable and was great for taking to my mom's....

In had the mini one loved it and was able to use it until DD was about 5 months or so....My only regret now is that I didn't spend the extra money to get the full sized co-sleeper cuz it converts into a playpen. We had to go out and buy a seperate play pen. Plus most playpens say they're only good until the infant is like 35 lbs or 30 inches, and the co-sleeper playpen is good up until 50 lbs......

I think it's a waste of money. We had a pack 'n play in our room with a bassinet attachment inside. :) The bassinet can only be used up to a certain length/weight, therefore we found it useless and a waste of money.
ETA: Even at my parent's house a pack 'n play was/is used. :)

We bought a Graco Pack N Play w/ a bassinet & that, IMO, is perfect! Not only do you have the bassinet, but you have the play area for when the baby is older & you can travel w/ it. You also have a changing "table" that connects w/ the bassinet. It's been perfect for us :yes

We had a cradle that we got from a friend of my MIL's. She was only in it for a few weeks before we moved her to her own room. She didn't like it and she was such a noisy sleeper that we couldn't sleep with her in our room. All of us slept a lot better when she was in her own room. It's worth it to have something in the room for the first few weeks though. We were going to use our playyard which is also a bassinet until we got the cradle - she sleeps in the playyard when we travel.

I never used a bassinet. We had the crib in our room for 6 months and since then I've just gotten up to nurse since I dont work. Val got used to her crib fast so all i have to do is lay her down in it and she falls asleep. And we use a pack and play when we travel. Personally, I wouldnt use a bassinet. My dh just got the baby for me the first month at night since I had a c-section.

We had a bassinet for both babies. We put it in our room. With Breanna it worked great. She slept well in it. With Johnny though he hated it. By the time he was 3 weeks old he and I were sleeping in the living room since he would only sleep in his swing at night.

That is the one I have :)..

With the first one I used one cause I got it as a gift. It was more of a PITA than anything so not worth the money. With the 2nd one I used a pack n play at grandma's house..

I have a pack and play and a pack and play travel lite... I'd much rather use a basinette than one of those on my room. Both my pack and play's are away.

I had one with Caleb. He maybe used it for 2 weeks, so it was a waste of money for me. My cat used it more than Caleb did...

We bought a Japanese Basinet. It was low to the ground, had a base with a removable basket with pad and frilly bedding. The base rocked. I loved it! We used it for 2 months until she moved into her crib, then used it ocassionally until she grew out of it for naps. Morissa now uses it for her dolls. When we found out I was pregnant back in January, she has washed all the bedding in the washer and graciously donated it for the new baby! Unfortunately we didn't get to use it. BUT, we will use it in the future...God Willing!

I loved my bassinet. I would put it by our bed, then in the morning bring it out to the living room. I hated to have Katrina too far from me, and now with #2 I want to get the arms reach co sleeper and put a pack and play or soemthing in the living room...I hate the thought of the baby not being right here.

That's pretty much what I do. I have my basinette in my room and I had the smaller pack and play in the livingroom.
