No, I'm not ttc :teehee but I've always wondered about this...say you aren't TTC but you just happen to get preganant. Now, since you weren't trying you of course weren't expecting to get pregnant (let's say you are on BC and you are both being very careful but it just happens.) If you drink does that harm the baby that early in the pregnancy? I'm sure I should know this being a nursing student and all :giggle but I've always wondered. It just seems like something like that could happen very easily and I wasn't sure how much damage it would cause the child...also, what if you were still taking your BC/ :dunno I'm just thinking too much today :lol

No it is usually fine. Even women who TTC do things early in pregnancy. I know I did. After TTC for so many years I had kinda given up hope. So I had restarted smoking and then boom. I was pregnant with my son. So I quit. Plus I do know some Dr's actually ok a drink or 2 in moderation. Why I dunno but it seems that some Dr's on my preg boards do...

Many women drink, smoke, exert themselves, ride rides, horseback ride etc etc before ever finding out they are pregnant.

Thanks for the quick answer! :D I've always kinda wondered about that especially since I'm sure plenty of our grandparents drank and smoke all throughout their pregnancies because they just didn't know it could harm the baby. :dunno

Yep. My mom smoked 3 packs a day with me. Irionically enough they were JUST starting to figure out it MAY have side effects so she entered a study with the University of Washington during her pregnancy with me and continued to smoke while they monitored me growing in her...I was low birth weight tho. (Im old what can I say ;) )

That's crazy! Yeah, I've always wondered about that since for years and years no one knew the harmful side effects of doing things like that. I'm glad you turned out ok :teehee

The odds are low BUT one night of drinking (even in early pregnancy before you know you're pregnant) CAN cause FAS.

My mom also smoked heavily while she was pregnant with me. I have several health problems related to that and her smoking around me my whole life.

One of my neighbors sits out there with her pregnant belly and a cigarette.
I don't like that idea. One of my sisters-in-law told me, "Oh, I smoked and drank while I was pregnant with (forgot which kid), and he turned out ok." So. It doesn't mean I'll knowingly do something like that.

my birth mom didnt know she was pg until she was 6 months pg... she was 14, had irregular periods anyway, and gained all of like 4 pounds... and carried me high in her ribs.... so she wore her regular jeans throughout the entire pregnancy

Agreed. My best friend smoked with all 4 of her kids. And yeah they are fine. She would always say "Well your mom smoked, and I smoked and our kids are fine..you'll be fine too" But I chose to quit both times. I quit with E and sadly restarted once I weaned him. Then quit when I found out about this baby....I just cannot knowingly do something like that

I think it's great that someone can quit thinking about themselves for such a long time. I can't imagine being addicted to cigarettes, but if I ever was I hope I'd love my baby enough to quit for 9 months.
