CNN confirms: Federal health officials have approved the sale of the so-called "morning-after" pill without a prescription. Under the news alert...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. won U.S. approval to sell its Plan B "morning-after" contraceptive without a prescription to women 18 and older, the company said on Thursday.

Younger girls still need a prescription for Plan B, the company said in a statement. The Plan B pills may prevent pregnancy when taken within 72 hours of sexual intercourse.

without a prescription??? do you think that's a good idea? then girls/women can just have sex, not worry about it, go get the pill.... where would you buy the pill from without a prescription too?? I don't think that's the greatest idea.... I think that will make people more careless with having sex, possibly even creating more of a spread of STDs.... lots of issues that I see there...

I agree. I see WHY they are doing it. To help stop things like babies being dumped minutes after birth etc. But they had a "solution" for that. Drop off places where no questions asked yet we still have problems with it. We still have innocent babies being born and dumped. So I dont see this as a complete solution either.

What concerns me about this is women being careless. The spread of Aids. Other STD's etc. The MAP wasnt "that" hard to obtain as it was. A friend of mine and her husband were not ready for another kid, they are fertile, and the condom broke. So she went to planned parenthood, explained the situation and was prescribed it right there....

I just dunno how I feel about this at all :no I really Don't.

Think about it this way....what's the difference between preventing pregnancy this way, and preventing it with the 'traditional' pill?

You don't need a perscription for the traditional pill?!

Ellen

Yes, you need a prescription for the 'traditional' pill, but I was moving towards the line of what's the difference between the morning after pill and the traditional pill. They both prevent pregnancy from occurring.

Aah ok - I agree. I'm not against the morning after pill but I do think a perscription should be required for it.

I can agree with it needing a prescription. I think alot of people have an issue with the pill itself

Nope. No issue. But I think a prescription should be required. With it being so readily available women wont NEED to take precautions. Thus spreading many STD's, AIDS etc. (At least in my opinion) By leaving it a script it makes it a bit harder to obtain but not much. And makes the women take more precautions

If it is behind the counter at a pharmacy that will help to preven theft. And most likely it will cost a good amount of money too.

I agree. I don't think it should be over the counter. Even BC is perscription. But I really don't like the morning after pill over all. There is a difference between that and BC from what I understand, and I don't agree with it.

if they're gonna make plan B a non-prescription drug why not "the pill?" it's basically the same thing right?

Amber V

They are not the same thing but the same idea. The plan-b is for more of a condom broke or if you were raped or doing something dumb while drunk or something. It is much stronger than the pill. A pill needs to be taken everyday and has a gradual hormone effecton your body.

aaaa i see now! I never really knew...:dunno I don't think it's a good idea really either way to have plan b....it sounds like an easy fix for some...i can understand some people who use it for condoms that broke but i'm sure people will use it as an easy way out....

I don't see how there is any difference in the long run than the plan B pill and the traditional pill. Eggs can and do get fertilized while on the traditional pill, but the environment that it creates within the uterus makes it unable to implant........same thing with the plan B, only it's at a much higher doseage, for women who are not currently taking any pill at all.

Women who are currently HIV positive can get on the regualr pill and spread the disease far and wide......why plan B makes that any different I can't comprehend:dunno

Geeze personal responsibility has to come into play somewhere along the lines! Just by having the plan B pill available IMO doesn't mean that educated people in our society will see it as some "free for all" to throw all caution to the wind:rolleyes

I am against the pill period. as seen in Sonias post
But who says that parents won't be running to the store to get these for their underage kids etc... And yes I think that it will spread STDs cause some will look at it oh we don't need one cause you can just go take a pill tomorrow :rolleyes
The deal to with tradition BC pills and the MAP is that some girls won't go to the DR to get a prescription and if it is available over the counter then an older friend/parent can get it an non else has to know.
And CNN just said that women would go to the pharmacy show ID to prove 18 and then they can get the pill

Oh and seriously how many Drs can get patients in within 72 hours? I haven't seen very many

People that are THAT ignorant to just throw all caution to the wind....just because there is a pill that will prevent pregnancy...........wouldn't think much of their personal health in the first darn place!!

Most smart, educated people that use protection now a days, usually don't do so because a baby is their biggest fear! I just don't buy that most people are fearful of pregnany first and foremost :yes

And besides how is it any differerent for an hiv positive woman (on the pill) who now wants to go screwing around. Men are going to fall at her feet since she can't get pregnant and has everything taken care of :rolleyes

Ignorance is ignorance whether plan B is around and available or not and that is a FACT:yes

oh only IMO:giggle

I hear what you are saying. But there are people who cannot take birth control with hormones in them. My cousin is like that. She has to use condoms. If one broke and they really do not want a baby this should be accessible to her. Most dr's cannot get you in within 72 hours now a days. This will not stop people from being ignorant by anymeans. But it helps people who are trying to do the right things when accidents happen.
