Philip Friedman, 65, faces six years of probation for inappropriate conduct with 11-year-old girl
ALBANY -- A former Temple Israel cantor pleaded guilty today to molesting an 11-year-old girl.
Philip Friedman faces six years of probation under a plea agreement with prosecutors for two misdemeanors -- endangering the welfare of a child and forcible touching -- in City Court.
The 65-year-old clergyman will have to register as a sex offender.
Temple Israel fired Friedman in May after he was accused of inappropriate behavior with a member of the New Scotland Avenue congregation. His duties included chanting the liturgy of services, preparing students for bar and bat mitzvahs and teaching Hebrew school.
Leaders of the Conservative synagogue released a statement today saying ``a difficult chapter in the life of Temple Israel is closed.''
Sentencing will be Oct. 12.
