SAN DIEGO -- A five-year-old girl was on life support Sunday morning after her older sister attacked her, police said.

San Diego police were called to the scene at a condominium Friday night in the 11000 block of Via Rancho San Diego.

Police said the eleven-year-old girl attacked her younger half-sister with an object. Investigators were not saying what that object was.

The father, who apparently lives at the home alone with his three children, was away on personal business, NBC 7/39 reported.

“You can't leave your kids alone for any length of time until they're adults,” the family’s neighbor, Ray LaFavor, said.

The 11-year-old was in juvenile hall Sunday morning facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon.

Sheriff's investigators said the younger sister is on life support at Children’s Hospital, but the prognosis is not good.

OMG poor little thing how awful. How could he leave his little kids home for so long all alone. He should have atleast asked a neighbor to check up on them every hour or something. :no

:inshock I couldn't even imagine attacking someone like that when I was 11!

Now I think that's BS but of course you can't leave kids that age alone when you are out of town!! Where the heck was that father's brain?!

well there have been times ive wanted to kill my sister- but ive never done it lol. i used to throw shoes when i was younger, my sister is 14 months older and a total biatch but yeah i wouldn't whack her over the head with one- i wonder what really happened. I dont know whether or not the 11 yr old is the guilty one here- kids do stupid things, and im sure she didn't intend on literally putting her sisters life at risk, and an 11 yr old is a child aswell! But jeez- that father should be getting charged for something.

I wouldn't even leave my 16 year old home while I was out of town. Too many things can go wrong. I do leave him home while I go places but I have my phone and can get home if there is a problem with one of the kids.

oh that is just awful. i agree you never leave your kids alone like that even if you werent going out of town. i think certain states or cities have a law where they have to be a certain age to be left home alone dont they?

In CA there is no age limit. It's a maturity thing. If the police were called they would ask the kids certain questions - who to call in an emergency, how to contact parents. If they feel that the kids are mature enough to be home alone then it is not an issue.

When I leave my kids home they are always in at least pairs. That way if something happens there is always someone else her that can make a phone call. Nobody stays home if one of my two oldest kids aren't home though.

:no THAT is the most ridiculous, irresponsible thing I think I have ever heard about a state.....

I guess they feel the parents should be responsible enough to make that decision. I personally don't think the government should be able to tell me when my child can or can't stay home alone by themselves. As an adult I think I'm capable of making that decision. Obviously from this story we aren't all at the same level.

i stayed by myself since i was 11 for the afternoons when i got home from school. i got picked up and dropped off at home with no problems. i knew how to call 911 and what to do. it does depend on the child imo. the guy shouldn't have left an 11 year old alone with a 5 year old. that's too much responsibility for the 11 year old--for any 11 year old. it should depend on the parents though.
