Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin dead
September 04, 2006
THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead.
He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said. It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.
He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that's when it occured.
Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.
mara_jade81 09-03-2006, 11:35 PM Pretty sure he had a son and a daughter, Bindi and Bob.
CoffeeGirl 09-03-2006, 11:36 PM He has a wife and a young daughter named Bindi
He does have a baby son & I am sure about that because there was great controversy after he was born & Steve dangerously held him or dangled him close to a HUGE gator or something like that when he was just fairly new born
SIMMYBABEZ 09-03-2006, 11:37 PM Well all i can say is- he died doing what he loved. He died in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Port Douglas is a beautiful part of the reef. Ah man- this really is upsetting. I always thought a crocodile would kill him too..
Shanoony 09-03-2006, 11:37 PM OMG My cousins and I were just talking about him yesterday...man i'm sad now!
mara_jade81 09-03-2006, 11:38 PM I never thought an animal would kill him. He was raised around crocodiles and the like, he really knew what he was doing.
SIMMYBABEZ 09-03-2006, 11:38 PM I know that the major controversy was when Bindi went swimming with an anaconda- but i thought there was a little boy too- but he isn't heard of much. Bindi has her own show at the zoo and everything.
CoffeeGirl 09-03-2006, 11:38 PM I agree Simone-I'm sad but he passed doing what he loves
MichelleB 09-03-2006, 11:38 PM I can't find an article! I can't believe he died....
Amber V 09-03-2006, 11:39 PM That is sad.
Britt 09-03-2006, 11:39 PM DIdn't he have a boy that the media got pissed about because he brought it in by a croc?
Mommy2Bailey 09-03-2006, 11:41 PM I googled it and it took a few tries to get anything. Now I am getting all the AU articles. There are a couple out.
SIMMYBABEZ 09-03-2006, 11:41 PM Yeah- the news just came out on tv now- so nothing is in print in australia right now but im sure there is web articles coming up by the second.

HEIDI 09-03-2006, 11:43 PM Steve Irwin killed in stingray attack
By 7News
Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin has been killed in a stingray attack near Cairns on Australia's far north coast.
It was believed Irwin had been swimming off the coast of Cairns when he was stung.
"It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest," Brisbane's Courier Mail reported this afternoon.
Irwin was best known for his documentary series "The Crocodile Hunter".
He was born in Victoria and found his love of animals after following in his father's footsteps, volunteering his services to the Queensland Government's East Coast Crocodile Management program.
He spent years living on his own in the mosquito infested creeks, rivers and mangroves of North Queensland, catching huge crocodiles single-handed.
In June 1992, he married American Terri Raines after they met when she visited Irwin's Australia Zoo.
The 44-year-old is survived by his wife and two children, Bindi and Robert.

SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Steve Irwin, the Australian TV presenter known as the "Crocodile Hunter," has died after being stung in a marine accident off Australia's north coast.
Australian media reports say Irwin was diving in waters off Port Douglas, north of Cairns, when the incident happened on Monday morning.
Irwin was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, according to Cairns police sources. Irwin was filming an underwater documentary at the time.
Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality Monday morning off Port Douglas, according to Australian media.
Irwin, 44, was director of the Australian Zoo in Queensland.
He and his American-born wife Terri Irwin became popular figures on Australian and international television through Irwin's close handling of wildlife, most notably the capture of live crocodiles.
SIMMYBABEZ 09-04-2006, 12:09 AM Im quite sure his wife knows. It happened this morning. It's now 3PM
Sarah 09-04-2006, 12:09 AM :( I read that his wife doesn't even know yet.
I saw that too!! I am surprised they didn't try to contact her first. Imagine not knowing that your husband died, but the whole world knows before you :no
SIMMYBABEZ 09-04-2006, 12:11 AM Jeez I hope she knows! Im sure she would have to because it happened a few hours ago- my god i would hate to think she would find out by hearing it on tv or something...
Mommy2Bailey 09-04-2006, 12:11 AM WOW Simone. I didnt realize there was that big a time difference!!
SIMMYBABEZ 09-04-2006, 12:12 AM Lol yeh- its 3:10 PM Monday afternoon.
Mommy2Bailey 09-04-2006, 12:13 AM Surely she knows. She was almost always with him and with it being that time there she has to know. We are just behind here.
Sarah 09-04-2006, 12:15 AM I just got this quote off of CNN.com
Queensland Police Services also confirmed Irwin's death and said his family had been notified.
Surely she knows. She was almost always with him and with it being that time there she has to know. We are just behind here.
yes, but it said she was in tasmania
Armylove 09-04-2006, 12:16 AM Thats horrible.
Mommy2Bailey 09-04-2006, 12:16 AM Yeah I just read that report about her hiking in Tasmania. None of the news reports say the same thing....lol
SIMMYBABEZ 09-04-2006, 12:17 AM We are all behind. There is no real reports except the ones on tv.. but even they are saying when they get more information we will be the first to know.. so the reports are quite sketchy.
This is so tragic- i was just watching tv happily then the report cuts in and my heart just sunk. I feel so sorry for him. The barb pierced his chest- i just hope it was quick and not too painful. Hearing this news was just the last thing i ever expected.
Well tasmania isn't too behind in time at all. She would know- tasmania is getting the same news reports as us right now so she would have been told. And im sure she is already on her way back up here.
Pebbles 09-04-2006, 12:27 AM I really liked the dude. May he rest in peace :(
VinnysGirl 09-04-2006, 12:28 AM That's so incredibly sad. His show was one of my favorites to watch! That just sounds like such a traumatic way to die, but at least he was doing what he loved in a beautiful place! God rest his soul and God bless his family!!! I can't imagine what his wife and kids are thinking. I know watching him with his daughter, Bindi, was just the most beautiful thing. He was so close to her and she was so sweet with him!!
Oh my gosh..thats CRAZY!! I didn't watch the show a lot, but I always found it to be interesting and entertaining. I always did think the guy was a nut...I'm sad to hear that he has died. We were just talking about him earlier today.

He was excentric but loved what he did!
OK... Really dumb question coming...
If stingrays can kill you... why do they let you play with them at Seaworld?
Maybe I'm just having a "moment" asking that since I am physically exhausted from all the moving I did this weekend... but I had to ask
JudyB 09-04-2006, 12:39 AM Oh how sad!!! :sadeyes

The barb is like a fingernail....they use special tools and clip it I think weekly!!:mrgreen
Mommy2Bailey 09-04-2006, 12:39 AM I did read that the stingrays barb went through his heart. I think that would do it. Other than that :dunno
*~*Cori*~* 09-04-2006, 12:41 AM Oh Ok... how sad!!! :(
Yup he had a son and a daughter.
Stingrays usually do not attack.. I feel for the family! We used to watch his shows..
DaddyG 09-04-2006, 12:50 AM That's too bad. Had Joy teary eyed when she read the story. His youngest is what? 2 or 3?
HIs youngest was born ins 2003... So 3 yrs old.
SIMMYBABEZ 09-04-2006, 01:02 AM Sting rays are quite placid creatures. They are so beautiful. Ive swam with them in the reef and i was petting them and everything. It was a freak accident- some reports are saying he was attacked but im not so sure about that because Sting rays usually do not attack unless provoked. But it was spring and she could have been protecting her young. Who knows- there are many factors that havn't been reported yet.
However we did just here this- he suffered an instant heartattack after the barb went through him and died straight away. He will be flown to Cairns later tonight. Full news and coverage will be on in 3 hours. Ill be watching.
=Mrs.AiNokeA= 09-04-2006, 01:05 AM Oh that is so awful... I mean he did annoy the hell out of me but still that sux. I feel sorry for him family too poor things. :pray :(

Mrs_Snafu 09-04-2006, 01:29 AM BRISBANE, Australia - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition, Australian media said. He was 44. Irwin was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state when the accident occurred, Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its Web site. The Australian Broadcasting Corp. said Irwin was diving near Low Isles Reef near the resort town of Port Douglas, about 1,260 miles north of the state capital of Brisbane. Queensland ambulance service spokesman Bob Hamil confirmed that a diver had been killed by a stingray off Lowe Isles Reef but refused to say who the victim was until relatives had been notified. A rescue helicopter was sent from the nearby city of Cairns, and paramedics from it confirmed the diver's death. "The probable cause of death is stingray strike to the chest," Hamil said. Staff at Australia Zoo, Irwin's zoo in southern Queensland, said they had heard the reports but could not comment. Irwin is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!" in his television program "Crocodile Hunter," which was first broadcast in Australia in 1992 and has aired around the world on the Discovery channel. He rode his image into a feature film, and developed the Australia Zoo as a tourist attraction. Irwin had received some negative publicity in recent years. In January 2004, he stunned onlookers at the Australia Zoo reptile park by carrying his 1-year-old son into a crocodile pen during a wildlife show. He tucked the infant under one arm while tossing the 13-foot reptile a piece of meat with the other. Authorities declined to charge Irwin for violating safety regulations. Later that year, he was accused of getting too close to penguins, a seal and humpback whales in Antarctica while making a documentary. Irwin denied any wrongdoing, and an Australian Environment Department investigation recommended no action be taken. Irwin was also seen as a vocal critic of wildlife hunts in Australia. The federal government recently dropped plans to allow crocodile safaris for wealthy tourists in the Northern Territory following his vehement objections. Irwin told the Australian television program "A Current Affair" that "killing one of our beautiful animals in the name of trophy hunting will have a very negative impact on tourism, which scares the living daylights out of me." He is survived by his American wife Terri, from Oregon, and their daughter Bindi Sue, 8, and son Bob, who will turn 3 in December.

=Mrs.AiNokeA= 09-04-2006, 01:30 AM Yea this was posted a lil while ago. Thanks though :D
usnwife1205 09-04-2006, 01:31 AM wow that is so sad..
Rileysmom 09-04-2006, 01:37 AM I merged the three threads together so that everyone could post it all in one! ;)
So sad though! :tears His poor wife and children!
SIMMYBABEZ 09-04-2006, 01:47 AM I just watched the news story.. so this is what happened..
He was filming his new series about tiger sharks up in the reef- and he was swimming over a giant sting ray when it lashed out and pierced him. He was then taken by medivac to a hospital but he died en route. Apparently there have been only about 3 deaths by sting rays in Australia. They do not usually attack but if people are stung near major organs like the heart- then it can do alot of damage and end up in a heart attack- and this was the case here.
Teri is on her way up to brisbane, where she will then board another plane to get to Cairns.. she only found out about 2 hrs ago- it wasn't easy contacting her because she was in a remote part of the tasmanian rainforrest hiking.
This is so tragic- my mum is in tears, im almost there aswell- everyone thought he was invincible- he proved us all wrong. RIP Steve Robert Irwin 1962-2006.
mara_jade81 09-04-2006, 01:57 AM I admit, I got a lil teary eyed when I read the news articles :(. I thought his wife was from my neck of the woods (Oregonians rock).
I loved how upbeat and positive he was, maybe he wasn't like that all the time in person but he just seemed like that kind of person. I loved how passionate he was about wildlife too.
Armylove 09-04-2006, 02:00 AM I feel bad for him... But I was suprised he lived this long, with all the crazy things he did.
USNWife2004 09-04-2006, 02:23 AM It is so sad!! I loved him!! Like someone said earlier at least he died doing something he loved!!!! Prayers for his family!!!:pray :pray :pray :pray :pray :pray
SIMMYBABEZ 09-04-2006, 02:29 AM The things he did wern't that crazy. Perhaps to the rest of the world it would be. But not to us Aussies. The only thing we thought was crazy was his upbeat personality, which was always the same on & off camera.
achicnsocal 09-04-2006, 04:29 AM This has really upset me :sadeyes
Me and my Mom use to watch his show together all the time ... :sigh I really liked him ...
