Don't worry- no dogs :rofl Just fish :teehee We bought a little fish tank "for Jaxon" but it stays in the livingroom and of course Jason and I expect to care for them. But we're letting Jaxon "help" us feed them and what not. He's only 3 1/2 but it gives him a little bit of responsibility. He is always happy to see them in the morning :giggle Shelby LOVES them. The second time we told her "fish" she repeated it. I think thats the quickest that she's ever picked up a word and I guess it's mostly b/c they excite her so much. She just sits and stares at them and points saying "FISSSSHY!" :P We only got a little 5 gallon tank b/c we don't want to set up some big, nice salt water tank when we'll be packing up and moving in 18 months. So, we have 4 guppies (two different types) and an upside down catfish. I kid you not :shock Its a little catfish that swims totally upside down. :shrug

They are kind of boring but at least the kids like them, they won't pee on my carpet, they don't bite, they will not chew up our things and the whole shebang costed less than $50 :D Oh, and no vet bills. :teehee :lol

That is such a good idea. I'm glad the kiddos love them :)

Congrats on the fish! But I think 5 fish in 5 gallons will put too much stress on the fish and the cycles the tank goes through. I only have salt water so I dont know if fresh water is more forgiving.

I've had lots of fish for a really long time. I actually gave them and my intire tank set up away just before the kids and I moved here. The usual ratio of fish to water in a fresh water tank is an inch of fish per gallon of water. Guppies are small so Im sure you'll be fine. cleaning the tank is easy. put the fish in a bowl, drain the water in the tank wipe the sides with a sponge you bought just for the tank. Rince the rocks, replace the water in tank. I've always used tap water and never had a problem with it. just make sure its about the same temp. as the water you dumped out. Replace the fish and your good to go! I've never bothered with stress releaver gel, pH kits or any of the other stuff they sell. The only thing I really needed was when one of my fish got yuck.

My daughter wanted some fish so I took her and she picked out 3 goldfish. They were all dead by the next morning....lol........She was traumatized......I dont know what went wrong:dunno

Our friend has a huge salt water tank with only 2 fish, but a lot of corals and what not. it's beautiful and rhianen loves to just sit in front of it for a long time. it's cute. good idea!
