View Full Version : Santa **No Drama plz**
~Jess~ 09-18-2006, 01:30 PM Well since the season is coming up fast I wanted to ask a question. When you take your kids to see Santa do you prefer to take then to see one that is the same race as you or do you not care? I had a friend who was black and would only take her kids to see a black Santa. I personally don't really care but my hubby does. He thinks that we should take them to see a white Santa b/c in the books and movies he's white and he doesnt' want to confuse. Ella is too young now to really care but when she's older I dont' know what I'll do. What are you opinions on this? Please keep this drama free but remember everyone gets their own opinion.:D
Too be honest I have never seen anything but a white santa. When we go to see Santa we are looking for the man in a red suit. Not the white, black, or mexican man in the red suit. it would not bother me one bit.
does your friend want a black easter bunny or is it just for Christmas?
NavyChiefs_Wife 09-18-2006, 01:39 PM I won't take Sydney to see a Santa. I don't trust people and she won't go to them anyway. But if I were to take her to one it would be a white santa because that's what she'll see on tv and in pictures.

Just for christmas.
MichelleB 09-18-2006, 01:39 PM Honestly, it doesn't matter. But I've never seen anything other than a white Santa at the malls here, and where I grew up. :dunno I really have no problem with them being from another race, but I guess it would be weird to me since for 23 years Santa has always been "white".
~Jess~ 09-18-2006, 01:41 PM At Military Circle Mall in Norfolk they have a white Santa one day and a Black one the next I didn't know if it was like that everywhere or just there?

That's good I guess, for parents who have a preference. I took Taylor to The Avenues mall last year to see Santa. The guy seriously looked stoned. :lmao But Taylor loved him.
Sarah 09-18-2006, 01:43 PM I wouldn't have a problem with it at all. I would tell my kids, if they saw a black Santa and questioned it, I would say "Santa is every race and represents everyone"
VinnysGirl 09-18-2006, 01:43 PM I haven't ever really seen anything but a white Santa, but honestly I don't think it would really bother me.
Brialee 09-18-2006, 02:18 PM I would take Briana to see Santa...if he turns out to be black when we get there, he's still Santa. I wouldn't turn around and go back if he happened to be black or anything. But it's true, the majority are white. I don't think Bri knows at this age what race is so I don't think she'd notice really
Frankie Lee 09-18-2006, 02:28 PM The race of the Santa wouldn't matter to me!
Kaymara 09-18-2006, 03:10 PM I take E to see Santa.. Doesn't matter to me ifhe is purple ;) He's still Santa!
Amber V 09-18-2006, 03:15 PM Ok do not laugh too hard. I check it out the malls we frequent and decide which back ground I like best for the picture. The one I like is the lucky winner.

Thats cute ;) We always goes to vernon hills. I check out the santa himself. If he looks phoney or the costume is bad we usually won't. Last years was AWESOME
I_Love_my_marine 09-18-2006, 03:35 PM I havent even thought of that! I am Mexican and it would not bother me to take my daughter to a Black Santa or White Santa or Mexican Santa. I own my own personalized letter business and my Santa on my letters are only white! That makes me wonder if I would offend someone who wanted a black Santa on their childs letter!
Amber V 09-18-2006, 03:38 PM I really think people (in general) make too big of a deal out of this. I wonder why Santa cannot just be Santa?:shrug
amandalaine 09-18-2006, 04:06 PM I probably wouldn't care, as long as the santa stayed the same...Having them switch out the races at the one mall you're talking about every other day is kind of bad, because what happens when you take your kid in one day and you happen to be there the next day, and they see the different person and ask why Santa isn't the same as yesterday?
harrisonsdream 09-18-2006, 07:24 PM i've never seen anyone dressed up as a black santa. i think for some blacks and other minorities its a way for them to divide themselves further from the "unity" they all expect us to have. but honestly i'd probably take my children to a white santa--really all you see is their eyes though because they have the beard on
MontanaSweetie 09-18-2006, 07:31 PM We have not and will not teach our son about Santa, so we don't have to worry about that. :)
Stupid Question.................i have never seen a black man or a mexican with a long beard. can they actually grow their facial hair out? the santas we see have always had real hair. just wondering:thinkin
MichelleB 09-18-2006, 08:45 PM We have not and will not teach our son about Santa, so we don't have to worry about that. :)
I'm just courious why you haven't told him about Santa. :dunno
JudyB 09-18-2006, 09:11 PM Well...we always grew up being told that Santa could not be everywhere during that time of the year so he sent his elves to see what we wanted...and that is what we are telling our kiddos...so it doesn't matter what color he is!!LOL
MontanaSweetie 09-18-2006, 09:35 PM I'm just courious why you haven't told him about Santa. :dunno
I was not raised to believe in Santa...so its a little hard to pass on a philosophy to my child when I myself never believed in it. I have a hard time with the whole santa ideology when we all know that he's not real, and yet we teach our children to believe in him.
Angie 09-19-2006, 12:53 AM It doesn't matter to us what santa looks like a few years ago my kids did notice that different places had different looking Santas and we just said that Santa really isn't at all of the different malls ect. that the Santas we see are just Santas helpers.
KevzQueen 09-19-2006, 02:12 AM I have never thought about Santa's race. His color wouldn't matter to me. It's all fun.
It wouldn't bother me one way or the other. Like somebody else said, Santa is the man in the big red suit with the white beard not the man with black, brown, white or whatever colored skin.
I was not raised to believe in Santa...so its a little hard to pass on a philosophy to my child when I myself never believed in it. I have a hard time with the whole santa ideology when we all know that he's not real, and yet we teach our children to believe in him.
:yes We plan on telling our children that there isn't a Santa as soon as they are able to understand but we will still take them to do Santa pictures and so forth. My brother told me when I was 4 or 5 so I too grew up knowing that there was no Santa but it was still fun to play along with it.
harrisonsdream 09-19-2006, 05:42 AM WHAT THERE ISN'T A SANTA?!?!? j/k :giggle
Becca 09-19-2006, 06:20 AM I was not raised to believe in Santa...so its a little hard to pass on a philosophy to my child when I myself never believed in it. I have a hard time with the whole santa ideology when we all know that he's not real, and yet we teach our children to believe in him.
I never thought of Santa as a philosophy :giggle I couldn't NOT do the santa thing...it's too fun from the mommy side!!! :yes I also think that, regardless of whether he's real or not, he's an important part of childhood...just like the tooth fairy and the Easter bunny. As long as my child knows the REAL truth (based on my family's religious beliefs) behind Christmas and Easter, I think the other stuff is just a fun way to foster a creative imagination :) That's just me though - it would be REALLY HARD for me to not do santa though - like I said, it's just too fun!! I have been working on P's stocking (it's cross stitch) ALL YEAR LONG!!! :giggle
Christmas is SOOOO my favorite holiday! :lol I know noone asked for my opinion on that :oops But what started out as a sentence turned into an entire paragraph...sorry :giggle
I wouldn't turn away if I took P to see santa and he was black. Actually it might be kind've cool. But you know, the more I think about it, I've never seen a black santa :dunno
MichelleB 09-19-2006, 06:27 AM I was not raised to believe in Santa...so its a little hard to pass on a philosophy to my child when I myself never believed in it. I have a hard time with the whole santa ideology when we all know that he's not real, and yet we teach our children to believe in him.
I agree with Becca. I can't wait until Taylor is old enough to understand the whole Santa thing. And the Easter bunny. :lol I would have a really hard time not playing it up for her. It will be so much fun. I don't see any harm in doing it when I know eventually she will out grow all of it.
But I understand what you're saying...if you didin't grow up believing it then it's hard to pass on.
*Dawn* 09-19-2006, 12:10 PM it wouldn't matter Santa is Santa
In our house it is more of the "spirit" of santa than anything. my mom still gives us present from santa (i have a 9 year sister) and my dad still believes.
Becca 09-19-2006, 01:09 PM I was chatting with one of my girlfriends at the gym this morning about this. We were talking about the pros and cons of santa...meaning, the fun side of it versus the devastation that a child (like her husband) can feel when suddenly he is slapped with the reality that there is no santa. They have two kids and they have just taught the kids that Santa is real the same way Mickey Mouse is real. You can go to Disney Land and shake Mickey's hand, have your pic taken, etc. Same type of thing. I thought that was quite brilliant.
:edit
I just completely tj'd this thread. I'M SORRY!!! I won't post again. I promise. Not here anyways :rofl
black_kittie 09-19-2006, 01:15 PM i don't have kids yet but i doubt it matters to the kids that much...
Pebbles 09-19-2006, 03:18 PM I've never even thought about it and when B was young, he could've cared less :yes
CoffeeGirl 09-19-2006, 03:38 PM I have never thought about that actually but my kids have always seen a white Santa-I have never seen a black one anywhere out in Malls etc

That is a absolutely brillant way to look at it Becca!
mara_jade81 09-19-2006, 04:37 PM Doesn't matter to me either way but the last two years Madison has been terrified of Santa anyhow. If anyone will be seeing Santa it'll probably be Hayden while Madison cries :lmao.
MontanaSweetie 09-19-2006, 10:58 PM I never thought of Santa as a philosophy :giggle I couldn't NOT do the santa thing...it's too fun from the mommy side!!! :yes I also think that, regardless of whether he's real or not, he's an important part of childhood...just like the tooth fairy and the Easter bunny. Like I said, I was raised to NOT believe in Santa. Therefore I find it really hard to teach my son something that I myself never believed in. Christmas is my favorite holiday as well, and I understand that "Santa" is a big part of it. Santa is just not a big part of it in our household. :wink
Oh, and we don't do the Easter Bunny either...
And this may stem from the fact that we are not religous...so those types of symbols based on the religious holidays have no meaning to us.
HollySunshine 09-20-2006, 02:58 AM I've always gone to a white santa because in the books and movies like you said hes always white..
when ever i'd see a diff santa i'd be like "hahaha hes a faker!" but of course thats when i was a little tyke
breauxfam 09-20-2006, 12:08 PM I dont think that it would really matter, I however kinda agree with your husband I think it would be confusing, he makes a good point. we took Cj to see santa last year and it was a white santa, and this year it will be a white santa too, cause we have a couple friends they are an older couple but they do santa every year at the mall, he is santa and she is Mrs. Clause.. It is so cute..So he will be seeing a White santa this year, but I dont think that it really matters, orther than it might be confusing to the child.. Hugs and Kisses Nikki
