View Full Version : Micro Chipping????
Ellen 09-22-2006, 03:31 PM Has anyone had their pets Micro Chipped? I took Scamp to the vet the other day because he got in a fight and had a cut on his ear that was infected. Anyway, the vet had mentioned Micro Chipping because he is an indoor/outdoor cat.
instant_oatmeal 09-22-2006, 03:33 PM We got the cats done when we moved on base. I was told that we had to have all pets that lived on base micro chipped. It took 1 hour just to get one of the cats done, we had to hold him down with leather gloves and towels and everything. He was not too happy.

The vet made YOU hold him down???? That sucks. I don't know that I could hold him down for that. The vet assistant is wonderful with the cats, and can easily maneuver them, much better than I can.
instant_oatmeal 09-22-2006, 03:41 PM There was no vet assistant that day...it was only the vet. Yeah it was awful. I almost cried. He hated me for a few days.
Veronica 09-22-2006, 03:45 PM my cats are chipped too, but my vet sedated mine to do it...I have to say, you have/had a sucky vet to have to put your animals through that!
instant_oatmeal 09-22-2006, 03:53 PM I agree
HEIDI 09-22-2006, 03:57 PM All of our animals are microchipped, except for the new babies. Their new owners can do that.
It actually makes them a little sick, because it is a foreign body in their body, so their systems try to reject it.
I wouldn't have it any other way. If they got lost or hurt, they could be traced back to me.
Germanchick 09-22-2006, 04:01 PM All of our pets are chipped. I've never heard of having to hold them down. It's injected with a needle just like a shot would be. Took no more than half a minute for any of our pets, cost $25 and not more pain than a shot for them. In return, when they run away and are found they can be returned to you easily (as long as you keep your address updated in their system)
mara_jade81 09-22-2006, 04:56 PM Our cat came microchipped since we got him from the Hawaiian Humane Society and they chip all the dogs and cats that they adopt out. We definately had our dog done, especially since he's a purebred. I think microchipping is one of the best things to happen for pet owners.
It was very simple with the dog, just a needle that injected it. I of course wasn't there when they did the cat.
sunshyne 09-22-2006, 05:00 PM my dog is microchipped. It cost about 30 bucks at Petco and was quick and painless. they placed it in the back of his neck. He didn't even flinch.
harrisonsdream 09-22-2006, 05:07 PM when harrison and i get new pets--be it a cat or dog--they will be chipped, esp since they will be adopted
*Dawn* 09-22-2006, 05:09 PM Tabitha and Uh-Oh are both done..we got them done when the traveling vet came to the base..only $15 each on the base so it was a good deal
Katiebugg 09-22-2006, 05:11 PM Yeah you have to do it now when you live on a base! But we live so far out in the country. If someone wants to steal one of our dogs...... You better run like hell!!!!!!!!11

Uh-oh - what a cute name!
wolfspawprint 09-22-2006, 05:41 PM My kitten is chipped. All animals that come from the San Diego Humane Society are. :)
cricketswife 09-22-2006, 08:19 PM buddy was microchipped by the humane society the day we brought him home. so he has it, he just isn't registared because we didn't have the money when we thought of doing it, and have just not gotten around to it. but he's never outside without a leash, and i if i run after him and yell at him, he stops, turns around, hangs his head and comes trotting back to me.
VinnysGirl 09-22-2006, 08:47 PM Our baby is chipped! We got her at the Hawaiian Humane society and they are all chipped there!
LaurenOC 09-24-2006, 01:27 AM Im getting my dog chipped this week. Its only $15 at my vet. Do they really get sick?!
instant_oatmeal 09-24-2006, 03:21 PM My cats didnt get sick...they just didn't like the needle. :)
Veronica 09-24-2006, 05:57 PM my cats didnt get sick either
I have to get my dogs chipped before we move to Hawaii. I'll have the vet do it either this month or next month.
SezzySue 09-25-2006, 03:57 AM I have all of mine microchipped because I couldn't bare to lose them. It makes me feel very safe with that. My Rory will run and I don't know that she would come back or not
Ms_Rogerthat 09-26-2006, 11:14 AM Just got our dog done. We took him to the animal shelter to have it done for $5 bucks. The vet wanted $45.
It took about 10 seconds, and he had no pain at all. It was over in a heartbeat:D
both my dogs came micro chipped
Potatocup 09-26-2006, 11:51 AM Do you have to pay for a annual registration fee or anything? We don't have Sam chipped and he runs off leash all the time (oops). but he's very good about it. that boy loves home to much to get himself lost. :) But it is a good idea.
Michele 09-26-2006, 09:37 PM Both of our dogs are microchipped. The first one we had microchipped when we moved to Hawaii and it was a requirement.
Jennygirl 10-04-2006, 10:01 AM No there is no annual fee for the chip...Its just your responsibilty to update your address and such each time you move...
I never heard of it making any animals sick, thats kinda odd...Here at work its 30 bucks and usually takes a half second, its like getting a shot.
breakaley 10-04-2006, 10:26 AM My puppy got chipped last week. She did throw up alot after ward but I didn't think of it being that.
DH wants to get the kids chipped. :lol
BLBnJVB3 10-04-2006, 08:32 PM Our cat is. We didn't have it done. When we got her she already had it done.
sgmwife1 10-04-2006, 10:46 PM How is Scamp doing?
Ellen 10-05-2006, 01:15 AM How is Scamp doing?
Much better - thanks. I take him back tomorrow for a booster on one of his shots. He's going to be mad at me....
KevzQueen 10-09-2006, 02:53 AM I had to hold down our cat too, but it went very quickly. He kept trying to get off the table and shed so much in that small amount of time though.
PvtWinkiesgirl 10-11-2006, 07:35 AM I always prefer to hold my animals whenever I can. I figure I'm the best one to give them comfort. None of the animals are chipped, but my cat is indoors all the time and both my dogs are tattooed. Not that they would run away, and best of luck to anyone who tried to steal them. :lol It's just required for German registration.
jennyb 10-17-2006, 08:07 PM Our dog is microchipped, they did it right before we left the humane socity the day we adopted her. She didnt get sick at all . She cried a little when they did it but forgot about it almost instantly.
