View Full Version : Are these safe towns?? Jyll216 01-13-2006, 06:32 PM Chesapeake or Portsmouth Jyll216 01-13-2006, 06:41 PM Also, which is the closest town to Norfolk??? stacy 01-13-2006, 08:22 PM I've heard TERRIBLE things about Portsmouth. That is where the shipyard is that my dh works at and his command told us NOT to live there...bad area. We've been over there several times and the "old town" Portsmouth seems pretty nice (where the Naval Hospital is located) but the rest of it gives me the creeps.... I don't know a lot about Chesapeake but I have heard that it is nice over there. I think all of the cities have their good and bad areas around here...or at least that is how it seems to me. The thing about Chesapeake is traffic is going to be a bitch to get to the Naval Station in Norfolk to work. I have a friend that lives right on the chesapeake line (not even fully in chesapeake) and she says when her husband has to be at work at 7 he has to leave their apt at 5:30!!! Traffic here is AWFUL!! We live right outside the Naval Station and when dh has to work in Portsmouth he has to leave our house at least an hour early to get through morning traffic and can take from an hour to and hour and a half to get home in the evenings. Good luck :) Breezy 01-13-2006, 09:27 PM Never mind Jyll216 01-13-2006, 09:54 PM im sticking to virginia beach or hampton! Jyll216 01-13-2006, 09:55 PM Thanks girls! Cdawn45 01-14-2006, 10:54 AM lol we moved from hampton and it wasnt the best place either lol I would jsut make sure you tour the area that you are intrested in.... every place around here has bad areas!! Breezy 01-14-2006, 11:00 AM lol we moved from hampton and it wasnt the best place either lol I would jsut make sure you tour the area that you are intrested in.... every place around here has bad areas!! That is what I keep saying!!! BGsWIFE 01-14-2006, 12:01 PM Okay Look All The Cities Around Here Have Their Good Parts And Their Bad Parts You Really Have To Check It Out For Yourself! My Husband And I Live In Chesapeake But Like Maybe 2 Minutes From The Portsmouth Line And It Is Nice Over Here And I Have Lived In Portsmouth, You Just Have To Scope It All Out For Yourself! As Far As Hampton I Think It Is Just As Bad As Portsmouth (in Certain Areas) Just A Whole Lot Bigger! Ok In Portsmouth There Are Some Projects(ghetto) Jeffery Willson, London Oaks, There Are A Few Others But I Can't Think Of Them Right Now I Know A Couple Of Years Ago They Tore Some Down! They Are Trying To Rebuild Portsmouth. This Area Is Just Very Diverse! Oh And Where We Live It Only Takes My Husband About 20-30 Minutes To Get To Nob (norfolk Naval Base). But If Anyone Has Questioins About A Certain Area You Can Ask Me I Have Lived In The Area Since I Was About 10. Hope I Helped A Little Genia Jyll216 01-14-2006, 12:06 PM I have a question.. can you go check out Maple bay apartments.. Runaway bay.. and reflections for me and tell me if they are nice?! haha Aimee 01-16-2006, 10:17 AM Watch out for Hampton and the tunnel... one accident in there and you can get stuck for hours.:nutts dotb182 01-18-2006, 02:06 PM I use to live in p-town(portsmouth) when i was little, Like any other city it has its good and bad spots, but honestly, its mostly bad. I'd stay outta hampton 2, (I've heard horrible things from people that live there) Chesapeake is nice, but like we've been saying any area around here can be bad if your not careful and don't check in out 1st. Caimbrie 01-18-2006, 03:32 PM Hampton, Newport News and Portsmouth have the MOST bad areas. Virginia Beach and Chesapeake have the most nice areas, they are also a little but more expensive to live in. I live in Chesapeake and plan to stay here, It's nice here and EVERYTHING is close by. Chesapeake is a better drive to NOB than Virginia Beach. My husband works in Newport News.. so his drive kinda sucks but it's not too bad. Caimbrie 01-18-2006, 03:33 PM The Norfolk side of Chesapeake is where the bad area is. Chelly 01-20-2006, 12:16 PM Newport News isn't all bad. My dh's friends are the ones that convinced us to move out here and it's very nice. My aunt is also a senior at Christopher Newport so she's been here for 4 years. It just depends on where you go. There's ghettos everywhere. Virginia Beach isn't as nice and it seems on the outside though, just more expensive than anywhere else. Have you seen the traffic? Not to mention living there in the summer with all of the tourists. I stayed in Chesapeake for a little while in the Greenbrier area and that was nice. Apartment hunting from the internet is hard because you don't get to see the apartment at night or whats around it... and besides the outside picture always looks better on the computer screen. IgglesmumX2 01-20-2006, 12:36 PM Yeah I agree, NN has lots of nice areas. I love my house and where I live. If it wasn't for the commute I would stay here. That is really the only reason I'm moving into housing. Caimbrie 01-20-2006, 01:00 PM You just don't want to live anywhere near the shipyard in Newport News. Chelly 01-20-2006, 01:38 PM I agree... it scares me going near there even during the day. I went out and got lost purposely to see all whats around the area and i was like whoooaaaa... IgglesmumX2 01-20-2006, 01:48 PM Yeah downtown is way scary sometimes. I live in Denbigh and this is the best area I think. Caimbrie 01-20-2006, 03:15 PM My husband works at that shipyard and there is trouble over there all the time, it creaps me out. The first time I ever drove down there to meet Tony at work I got lost and I called him in tears because it was so awful there and I had no idea how to find my way back to where I needed to be lol He had to get in his car and come find me haha. dotb182 01-20-2006, 03:31 PM Apartment hunting on the internet is super hard, especially if your moving to a area like this , the best thing to do is just take a free weekend and come down to look around.
