View Full Version : The Genetics of Eye Color

At work today, we started talking about what we ideally wanted our kids to look like when we had them, and how what the father and his parents would have to look like the maximize the possibility of that. I know, very superficial, but we're bored and genetics is always an exciting topic (ha-ha, we're geeks, yes).

Anyway, I'd love for my kids to have blue eyes, just like me. So I've been reading all these websites dealing with eye color genetics to figure out the chances are that DB and I would have blue eyed children.

Here's the deal:

My mom has hazel eyes.
My dad has blue eyes.
I have blue eyes.

His mom has brown eyes.
His dad has blue eyes (I think).
He has hazel eyes.

So I should be homozygous recessive for blue, which means I will definitely pass on a blue recessive gene to our children.

However, the origins of DB's hazel eyes have me a little confused. One source says that with his make-up, he should be homozygous blue recessive with a green dominant modifier. But another said that he could be heterozygous brown with a dominant green modifier. I haven't found a definitive source explaining all the combinations it takes to produce hazel.

But going on the two options above, long as we weed out the brown dominant, we should be set for blue eyed or hazel eyed children. But...I'm not an expert and I'm just using web resources. Anyone else taken a genetics class recently? Or is anyone else have the blue-and-hazel eyed combo, and want to share the color of your kids eyes?

I'm not sure, but I would say that you have a 50% chance either way, but go figure my dad has hazel eyes and my mom has green eyes. I have blue eyes. lol!!

My mom has brown eyes
My dad (never met him so don't know)
I have Hazel eyes

His mom has hazel eyes ( I think)
His dad (he doesn't know)
He has BLUE BLUE eyes

Our son came out with Brown eyes, but are now Blue blue, like his Daddy.

I have no idea... I have Hazel eyes (mom blue dad brown) and my hubby has brown eyes and both his parents have brown so most likely for me I'd go with brown for our kids. :giggle

Adding onto this, I found a really cool website that I'm using to figure it out based upon his theory:

So according to that it is saying blue

No clue either, but..
I have green eyes
The ex has brown eyes
Colin (#1) has green eyes
Caleb has blue eyes

Well- no clue on the genetic stuff.

My Dad- Baby Blue
My Mom- Brown

I have dark brown.

DH's Mom- Brown
DH's Dad- Blue

My DH- Greenish Brown
Me- Dark Brown

DD1- Very Blue
DD2- Green

According to that website and several Punnet squares later, it looks like these are the results:

Blue eyed: 50%
Green eyed: 12%
Hazel eyed: 38%

That is foregoing any mutations that might occur, or other factors that we have not discovered yet. But he did leave out bey2, so I'm going to keep working on it, since I don't really want to be doing real work.

I got 50% blue, 25% hazel and 25% green, but I didn't use punnet squares!

dh has brown eyes & I have green/blue but both my kids have blue eyes

So I just did out his entire huge model, using using the bey2 gene, gey gene, and a modifier gene for the gey gene. I think that this one skews too much towards hazel eyed people. Either that, or Brown will still be dominant even when the modifier gene is present along with the dominant G.

Using -that- model I get: 38% hazel, 31% brown, 25% blue and 6% green. This is using all of the possible combinations of our parents and all of the possible combinations passed down to us from our parents.

This is frustrating. If I didn't have to go to my second job, I'd add in a second modifer gene for the bey2 and try again. I'm less optimistic about my kids getting blues eyes though. :no

That sounds more accurate. You never know though - your kids may be in the 25% :)

That sounds more accurate. You never know though - your kids may be in the 25% :)

So I just modified the theory - saying that Brown (bey2) will still be dominant over the dominant modifier in combo with a dominant gey. This changes everything to...

50% Blue
38% Hazel
12% Green
0% Brown

Since it would cut out any possibility of DB having a dominant B on bey2 due to his hazel eyes. That would place the odds in my favor for having a blue eyed baby. So we'll stick with that. Ha-ha: Stop all work and research once you have the answer you want. :teehee

:lmao I think it means that you should cross that bridge when you come to it! :neener

Well shoot there was a website where you could actually fill in the eye color of you, your spouse, both of your parents and your siblings to see the probabilities of your children's eye colors. I am going to try to find it.

I tried that, but it bases itself on the simple model for brown-green-blue. What makes it all so complicated is the third gene which contributes to people having hazel eyes. And apparently, geneticists haven't figured that out yet. And both my mother and DB have hazel eyes which complicates things due to recessive genes or modifiers. :(

My mom has brown
My dad has Hazel
I have Hazel

His mom has blue
His dad has Green
He has green

with that said our children
Maddie has golden brown
Alex has golden brown (mine was golden brown before it tunred Hazel)
Kaitlyn blue
Matthew?? I am thinking he will also have blue but that is just wishful thinking

I don't think genetics mean squat, honestly :rofl I have brown, my whole family has brown except for my dad. Jason has blue which he got from his mom but his dad and both brothers are dark dark brown. Both our kids ended up with the brightest blue eyes ever. There are only three people out of both of our families combined all the way back to our great grandparents who have blue eyes. So, I dunno how that happened, but :dunno :giggle

All I know is that if both parents have blue eyes the kids with have blue or green eyes.. they can't have brown lol. That has held true for me with my kids also. I learned about this in high school :)

I learned that bronw eyed people can have any color though...

She has two different colored eyes? That's so exotic! Lucky duck!

Yeah Ella has two diffrent color eyes. It's crazy but cute. The one that is brown has a big brown spot on it so I'm not sure if it will all go brown or just stay that way. But when you look at her you see a blueish/grey eyes and a dark eye. It's cool!!
