So I'm trying to plan the wedding & the move and I have a ton of questions!! If anyone can give me some general ideas or tips, please help!
Situation: df stationed in Norfolk, VA. getting married in PA dec.2nd. Trying to move to VA mid/late december.
questions:

1. Can I get health insurance as of the day we're married? Or do I have to wait until I go down there to get my card and all?
2. Being that he is already living on the ship, will they help me move my stuff from PA? How do they do that?
3. He will be taking leave for the wedding...but will he also get time off to move?
4. what exactly is a DIY move? (I know what it stands for but not sure if there is an advantage to it...as opposed to.....???)

umm....i'm sure i'll think of more...
thank yoooouuuu!

as for the Navy moving you since he has orders already They won't move you. A couple of girls have found ways around it. BUT you aren't on his orders so it isn't authorized. So that would put a dity out. You are best off getting a uhaul and doing it yourself.
As for leave all of that is up to the commnad. Some commands might others won't. IF he has days on the books and the command can spare him then they usually would. You can not get insurance until you are on his page 2 and in DEERS if there is a base near you (any branch) then it would be best to take care of the "paperwork" while he is there on leave if you are that concerned about your insurance

1. Can I get health insurance as of the day we're married? Or do I have to wait until I go down there to get my card and all? You should be a ble to get care as soon as he puts you on his page 2, which he can do the day you get married. I may be wrong though.
2. Being that he is already living on the ship, will they help me move my stuff from PA? How do they do that? Dont know...
3. He will be taking leave for the wedding...but will he also get time off to move? if he applies for it, he may be able to, you always have to put in for leave no matter what.
4. what exactly is a DIY move? (I know what it stands for but not sure if there is an advantage to it...as opposed to.....???) you make money off of it. We moved from FL to GA, cost us 800 we got paid 2200. SO we made out from it.

You can't get care as soon as he puts you on there. You need to fill out forms with Tricare, and depending on what day you sign up, you will start the following month. I *think* the date is the 20th... So say you go in on Jan 19th, then your insurance starts on Feb 1st. But if you sign up on Jan 20th, or any day thereafter that month, you won't get coverage until March 1st. Make sense?

Dh left for bootcamp in early april and he sent me the paper work in the mail I was seen on base at the end of april and it was covered. But that was about 4 1/2 years ago.

Hmm, do you have Standard or Prime? It might automatically enroll you in Standard, I'm not sure about that. But for Prime, you need to enroll. Here is what I was trying to expain but worded better! :lol

(From the Tricare website) There is a time gap between your submission of a completed enrollment form and its being received and processed by the regional contractor so that your coverage begins. To avoid a lapse in coverage, follow the 20th of the month rule: Submit your enrollment form and correct fee payment to the contractor by the 20th of the month before cover is to begin. For example, if your coverage is due to change--perhaps due to a change from active duty to retiree status--on February 15 and the contractor recieves your form and fee by January 20, your new Prime coverage will begin on February 16. If your form is received after January 20, your coverage will begin on March 1.

just know that if things aren't in writing 9 times out of 10 you might as well cross them off your list :D

DIY, we did it ourselves....and with the money left over, ended up with a new bedroom suit, dining room suit, fridge, stove, computer, riding lawn mower and more. But we went over the pounds that is the limit. But the extra money is great. I know when we moved, we used Penske truck, they were literally, a third of the price of any other moving trucks. So if you get paid to do it yourself, it is a good deal, if you can do it.
