NICKEL MINES, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A gunman killed "a number" of people at a one-room Amish schoolhouse Monday in Pennsylvania's Lancaster County, state police said.
The shooter was among the dead, state police Cpl. Ralph Striebig said.
"There are a number of people dead," Striebig said. "The exact number I do not know yet."
Oh my no. that is sooooo sad. like who would do something like this. those poor families.
mary79 10-02-2006, 01:12 PM I hate hearing this kind of stuff. You have to send you kids to school and you cant be there to keep them safe.
Cherrish 10-02-2006, 01:24 PM That's so sad... :no
Breezy 10-02-2006, 01:33 PM another reason that homeschooling is looking better everyday
Very sad though
Kaymara 10-02-2006, 01:41 PM Reports: At least 6 dead in Amish school shooting
POSTED: 1:37 p.m. EDT, October 2, 2006

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- A lone gunman walked into a one-room Amish schoolhouse Monday and opened fire, killing six people, according to initial reports.
The gunman then shot and killed himself, police said.
The man ordered some students to leave before opening fire on the remaining students, said state police spokesman Jack Lewis.
Lewis told CNN that the gunman shot and killed at least three students and a county coroner told The Associated Press that at least 6 people had been killed in the shooting.
A number of other children have been seriously injured, he said.
He said he did not know the motive for the attack. (Watch police investigate shooting scene -- 1:00)
Lancaster General Hospital initially received three young patients, ages 6 to 15 -- one in critical condition -- and expects to receive three more patients soon, spokeswoman Kim Hatch told CNN shortly after 1 p.m.
The three initial patients were transferred to other hospitals: two to Hershey Medical Center and the other to Children's Hospital in Philadelphia, she said.
Lancaster County's 911 Web site reported dozens of emergency vehicles -- including at least nine ambulances -- were dispatched to Bart Township shortly before 11 a.m. for a "medical emergency." The Lancaster County emergency communications Web site showed 20 incident calls listed to the normally quiet Bart Township at 10:48 a.m.
Video of the scene showed Amish young men wearing hats and suspenders and women and girls in long dresses sitting outside the small country schoolhouse, surrounded by dirt roads.
Horse-drawn carriages could be seen in a nearby parking lot.

yeah but the bad thing is that alot of people cant homeschool their kids. i guess we just have to make sure our kids are in a good school that doesnt have alot of crime. but it is a scary thing. even if we could afford for me to not work i still wouldnt be able to homeschool Robbie.
oh that is just so so sad.
Breezy 10-02-2006, 01:59 PM Yeah and no school is "safe" just like no car ride is "safe"
That is a chance we take in life.
I was just stating that everyday we find something that makes home school look even better
Caimbrie 10-02-2006, 02:08 PM another reason that homeschooling is looking better everyday
Very sad though
I said that to my mom today. We were on the phone and she saw it on the news.
oh i know every school is not "safe" thats not what i really meant. all i meant was that all we can do is to "try" to find the best schools that we can. i know they wont be free of all crime but we can at least look and do our research and try to find the schools that are a little more safer. I know they wont be totally safe. the schools my two older boys went to were very good schools and there was hardly any crime in their schools but not to say that there couldnt be. anyway for those of you who can homeschool kudos to you. at least you will know that your kids are safe from that kind of violence.
Caimbrie 10-02-2006, 02:29 PM The breaking news right now is saying that 3 young girls were killed in the school.
VinnysGirl 10-02-2006, 02:31 PM that's what I just heard. 3 young girls. the shooter told all the boys to leave and the shot the three young girls execution style in front of the blackboard and then he shot himself... :tears It's SOOOO sad! And this is a community that doesn't have much influence from the outside world. Nobody is safe anymore and that's what creeps me out the most. I have chills just thinking about it.
i thought 6 people were shot?
well one of the reports is saying multiple people were shot with at least 3 of them being the young girls and the gunman so apparently he has shot more kids and they were just wounded and then the 2 others that were killed i dont know who those were.
VinnysGirl 10-02-2006, 02:41 PM well from what I'm hearing on the news right now three were shot and killed on the scene and three more were transported to nearby hospitals and died in the hospitals... that's not confirmed, but is being stated right now... the state trooper who gave the news report said that there were numerous children transported to hospitals but three that were have died now. So that makes 6 that hav died. I'm not sure how many others are in the hospitals but they said some were shot in the arm or shoulder and not the head like the rest of them... It's just soooo sad! :tears
Krisha 10-02-2006, 02:44 PM Our local news is reporting that 4 are confirmed dead at the scene, three girls and the shooter. There are seven others that are being treated at various hospitals. They are saying that he was a night shift milk truck driver from the area. He worked last night, took his kids to their bus stop and then went to kill these girls. I guess he spoke to his wife while in the school house and said the horrible acts he committed were revenge for something that happened over 20 years ago. This is very disturbing being as though the Amish are very kind and peaceful people. This sick man knew exactly where to go to harm multiple girls. I am disguised w/this story.
They were saying 6 were killed including the gunman. 4 were taken to the hospital. One died and 3 are extremely critical with two having gunshot wounds to the head and one having been shot in the abdomen.
So many different reports with different stories.
They do know that all the boys were let go and the adults. The girls had their feet tied and the ones shot dead were shot execution style. This was done for something that happened 20 years ago to the gunman. He left behind two kids and a wife.
Breezy 10-02-2006, 03:19 PM my point exactly they aren't influenced by the outside world so their schools are safe and look what happened :(
Very very sad day.
well did anyone find out what happened 20 years ago that he had to go to an amish school and kill those girls. there is no excuse at all for this. none whatsoever.
Ms_Rogerthat 10-02-2006, 04:39 PM :no :sadeyes
:sadeyes :no i used to live by Lancaster county and i know where that town is...this is soooo sad :(
amandalaine 10-02-2006, 08:40 PM All I want to know is who the hell takes a one room Amish schoolhouse hostage?? I mean really!! Come on!
CoffeeGirl 10-02-2006, 09:09 PM :no :sadeyes :tears :vent
What is going on?:vent he dropped his kids off at school that morning, called his wife to say he was not coming home, and then killed 3 girls. all i can say is i hope he enjoys hell.
achicnsocal 10-02-2006, 10:06 PM :no I'll never understand it ... never ..
mossey2000 10-03-2006, 09:05 AM My heart goes out to those families. Those people don't bother anyone. I cant even imagine. And I agree, homeschooling is looking better and better every day.
VinnysGirl 10-03-2006, 01:41 PM yeah I'm thinking homeschooling is the way to go now... sheesh! It's a sad world when you can't send your children to school and know they will be safe from gunmen!
On the CBS news page, it said that it appears he molested a couple of his relatives when he was younger. They found lubricant on him and it appears he was going to molest those girls yesterday but they haven't said if he did or not:no
VinnysGirl 10-03-2006, 02:42 PM that is just so sad and just disgusting... geez... what is our world coming to?? :no
mossey2000 10-03-2006, 02:52 PM Those poor girls.....i dont get how that is revenge??
Breezy 10-03-2006, 02:53 PM they reported earlier that luckily none of them were molested
Well that is good to hear. When I read that online I was so upset (that they didn't know if he had or not)
