What kind of dog food do you feed you dogs?

We had been feeding Ol' Roy because it was a fairly decent price, but our Vet told us that that dog food was really bad for them because it was so high in fat. He told us to get a certain dog food, I think it was Natural Balance, but my dogs are large dogs and eat a lot so we can't really afford it. Are there any other good dog foods out there that aren't so expensive?

We use Iams for all 3 of ours. It's about 26 bucks for a 40 lb bag I think.

I give my puppers Nutro brand. I guess that is considered the better stuff among the "middle of the road" brands. It's the only stuff I have found that my dog does not have an allergic reaction to when she eats it. Around here, it goes for about $1 per pound. I know that gets spendy, but her coat has never been so healthy and she is full of energy. Good luck.

we have a pedigree puppy... LOL!! My family has always fed pedigree so that's what we stuck with. She's eating it fine and putting on weight just as she needs to. She eats all freakin day long! LOL!!

Our dog has weight issues - somehow the last time I took him in the vet suckered me into buying a $25 bag of Science Diet "diet" dog food...once it was gone we switched him to Purina One healthy weight formula, I only buy it at the commissary it's much cheaper there. If they're out, which happens regularly, we buy Beneful healthy weight. He's fine with either, and he must like it because he wolfs it down :lol

We buy Nutro. I think the key is making sure the first ingredient is meat, not rice or another grain/carb.

right now my dog is on the new balance, but that's because that's what the neighbor's dogs are on, and we haven't yet figured out how to get mine to eat his own (which is normally pedigree) and get them to eat theirs.

Here's a listing on how to "score" dog food as far as what's best to feed them. Personally, I feed mine Lamb and Rice flavored Kirkland Brand from Costco. It's low in fillers, and is cheap to boot!

How to grade your dog's food: Start with a grade of 100:
1) For every listing of "by-product" , subtract 10 points
2) For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or "poultry", meat,
meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points
3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points
4) For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source, subtract
5 points
5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first
five ingredients (I.e. "ground brown rice", "brewers rice", "rice
flour" are all the same grain), subtract 5 points
6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2
meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points
7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points
8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3points
9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points
10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract
2 points
11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is
allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points
12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points
13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog is not
allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points
14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog is not
allergic to beef), subtract 1 point
15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point

Extra Credit:
1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points
2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist,
add 5 points
3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points
4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points
5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points
6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3
points
7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2
points
8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points
9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2
points
10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point
11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point
12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than
the first one; count "chicken" and "chicken meal" as only one protein
source, but "chicken" and "" as 2 different sources), add 1 point
13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point
14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are
pesticide-free, add 1 point
Score:
94-100+ = A 86-93 = B 78-85 = C 70-77 = D 69 and below = F

Well, I feed my dogs Wellness, I am a food Snob...It cost almost 50 bucks for a 25 pound bag. We feed Whitefish and Sweet Potato...

Since I work in a vets office and most of my hobbies revolve around dogs, most people I know/work with feed wellness or a raw diet.

we feed ours mostly from the table he thinks he is human shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
but we trick him and mix mighty dog in with it.
Here is a piece of imfo for all you dog lovers.
if you feed your dog from the table add one teaspoon of fiber con to the food.
it has to be fiber con the rest have salinium in them.
I get the wall mart eqaute brand I ask the pharmacist which one was the same and thats what she said.
Our vet recomended this, so it comes from a vet.
And he has done so much better with eating and digestion also.

Thank you ladies! I went and bought them Pedigree for now until we figure out what will be better for them. Now I'm going to see how this dog food scores with the thing that DaPookie posted :giggle

Do they sell that at PetsMart? My friend in Cali works for a PetsMart and told me to use her employee discount number to get food for our dogs. I think she said it was like a 35% discount.

Oh and I just rated the pedigree ... it got an F. 21 points according to the scale that DaPookie posted :no

Awww ... darn. That's okay. I'm gunna go down to PetsMart and see what they have. If I find nothing good then I'm just going to have to suck it up and buy something from the Vet's office.

I'm picking about dog food just as I am people food. When we had dogs, we used to use Eukanuba but then switched to Nutro Ultra which is a hollistic dog food.
