View Full Version : Single or Double breast pumps
amandalaine 10-07-2006, 08:35 PM For those who have used breast pumps, would you recommend spending more to get a dual one, or do the single ones do well enough? The only difference I know of is that with the dual you pump them both at the same time, and the single it's one at a time so it takes longer. Is the amount of time it takes to pump with a single one a big factor, or does it really matter?
Brandi 10-07-2006, 08:48 PM Personally, I'd only do double. I've tried three different single ones and they were just way too much work and took way too long. If you're planning to give breastfeeding a really serious shot, I'd invest in a dual pump. Part of the reason why I didn't stick with it very long is because I felt chained to the pump b/c it took forever to get a bottle's worth. So, if I wasn't actually nursing, I was chained to the pump trying to get some extra milk for bottles. It just drove me crazy :nutts Its personal preference and I know it's doable with a single one, but I'd invest in the double if you can. Just my opinion on it.
amandalaine 10-07-2006, 08:51 PM From what I've heard so far, it seems almost pointless to get a single. I have a coupon for 25% off a Medela pump, so I'm just trying to convince my mom why I need the "so fancy and expensive" one. I'm wanting the Medela Pump In Style Advanced, because of the dual pump and also I've been told that the letdown feature on it makes it worth it to spend more on it versus the original.
Carebear 10-07-2006, 09:03 PM I use a manual single.. Because I get so much from one bb. lol Takes me only about 20 mins to get 4oz. I only pump when I want to have a night out or I want to have a few drinks.

I didn't even think about when I want to have some drinks! Yes...MUST get the dual pump!! :lmao
Seriously though :giggle

Same here, except for the night out and drink part... I doubt that will ever happen :) I like the Avent Isis. It has worked better than my double Medela pump in style ever did!
BLBnJVB3 10-07-2006, 09:24 PM I've had a single manual and now I have a double electric (it is a Medela). I wasn't crazy about the single one. I even said I would never pump again. Then when I was pg with Johnny John's chief gave me her double electric pump (she never used it and they aren't planning on anymore kids). I fell in love with it and will use it again this time. It was so easy to use. I was able to only pump one side if I wanted or pump both at the same time. I could adjust the strength of it pumping (that is a very good thing so it doesn't feel as if your boob is being ripped off). I got 2 sets of all my equipment so I always had a clean set. I would pump every 2-4 hours. Oh, also it is in a black briefcase looking thing so you can take it out in public and nobody knows you are carrying your breast pump. Mine has a pouch where you can put all the wires and attachments and one where you can put some ice packs and 2 4oz. bottles. Good Luck on your decision and convincing your mom.
ETA: I forgot to say this but it also has a place to put batteries in case you need to pump and you don't have access to an outlet.
mElIsSaE 10-07-2006, 09:33 PM I get the Medela from our ins they pay for the rental on it. When I first got preggo I got the Avent ISIS IQ and I have my old one from Nate. I guess I am going to see what I like best and go from there.
I have the Medela double pump and never used both at the same time. I guess it's just a matter of personal preference.
Veronica 10-07-2006, 10:12 PM I have a medela pump in style electric double...I couldnt pump both at the same time though...my nipples were flat (yeah they're not anymore!) and the fact that my boobs are big, I needed my other hand to hold the boob I was pumping...:teehee But I love my pump!
I bought a double one and didn't like it actually. No specific reason I just preferred doing it single. It could be though because one side I could get an entire bottle out of in about 15-20 minutes and the other side I would only get an ounce or two out of. It was just easier for me to use it as a single rather than a double. Now with Nikolai I still use it as a single but I am not producing the large quantities at once though it still only takes about 15-20 minutes to get a full 9 ounce bottle or more.
mary79 10-08-2006, 12:35 AM before you go spending alot of money on one, maybe you should rent one to see what would work best.
momto5lilmonkeys 10-08-2006, 06:24 AM I have the double medela pump in style also. I think it is the best! couldnt have lived without it :teehee especially with the twins! :hehe

I was going to do something like that, but I don't want to pass up a $80 discount, KWIM? I just found this coupon and it expires Oct 31, so I wouldn't be able to try anything yet since the baby won't be here until December.
Potatocup 10-09-2006, 07:38 AM If I didn't have my Medela pump in style, I wouldn't have been able to give her breastmilk. I couldn't breastfeed her, so I pumped and she had that.

wolfspawprint 10-09-2006, 09:10 AM Hey Amanda, where did you find that coupon? :)
amandalaine 10-09-2006, 05:33 PM Hey Amanda, where did you find that coupon? :)
It was in a baby magazine that I threw out :neutral It was probably in an older issue of Baby Talk or American Baby. Whichever one it was, there's always Baby Depot coupons in them.
wolfspawprint 10-09-2006, 05:36 PM Ah ok :) I'll have to keep an eye out then
