Hey Ladies... I'm going to be moving in Jan. to Ft. Sill when my hubby returns from his deployment, and I'm looking for some housing. I've never relocated with the Army and I'm not really sure how all this is going to work. I've tried looking online for housing but here doesn't seem to be too much information for the area, so I'm wondering if anyone might know anything.

How do you ladies move without your husbands, and/or get housing from another state secured? We may have to wait until he returns, as he will have a month leave. Thanks for the help!

I lived in Fort Sill when I was a kid. It's a nice area. I have a friend who still lives there and she says it's changed a lot since I was there. My parents and I always called it the Fast Food capital of the US. Every fast food restraunt you can think of, they have it. That's pretty much all I remember.

To get your move situated, you'll go into the Personal Property office and they'll get everything scheduled for you. Usually it's a day or two to pack and then they'll load the truck on another day. Your stuff will be put in storage there in the Lawton/Fort Sill area while you're on leave and then when you get a place to live you'll call the number they give you when they picked up your stuff at your current house and schedule a date for it to be delivered. There isn't usually a problem with taking leave while you're moving. We did it all the time when I was a kid. I think they'll keep your stuff in storage for up to 3 months free of charge. Having the Army move you is so much easier than doing it yourself.

Oh, wait, when did you guys get married? Make sure that you're included in his moving orders otherwise you'll have to move yourself no matter what. Oh, and you'll have to have a copy of his orders and your Power of Attorney to get the move scheduled. I always make sure to have at least 3 copies of orders with me when doing stuff like this because they always want to keep at least one.

Also, just remembered :D I *think* there is quite a wait for housing at Fort Sill. If he's been in Korea though your date for the housing list will be the date he reported to Korea because he was on an unaccompanied tour. I think you might still have to wait an additional 6 months to a year though depending on how many bedrooms you qualify for. You might want to call the housing office and ask them about the wait time.

Thank you so much for all your information, Erin!! I didn't think anyone was out there :) That's hilarious about the Fast Food Capital... that means I will definitely be Fat and Sassy this year! Haha.. I loooove fast food. As long as I can find work and contribute to the household, I'll be good. I wasn't really finding much on the net about it as far as housing or jobs, so I was a little scared about how hard it would be to get a job when we got there.

I also have one question that I don't know the answer to... since I came here to TN before we were married and actually, before he joined the Army (he called the next day "Hey baby, guess what I did yesterday?" :shock ) he went straight from AIT at Sill to Korea, and I stayed with family here in TN. So, I really don't have anyone around here to go to. Would it be best for him to go to his command there to get things set up? I'm trying to light a fire under him, but I know he's got a lot of things on his mind... although I think he's going to have to do this if he wants a house to live in! Hehe... Thanks again for your help!!

Is there a military base of any kind near you? I know for our family, its just easier for me to do stuff like that myself. If not, he would need to go to Personal Property on his base, not his command.

Yes, I'm near Ft. Campbell, it's about an hour away... I have gone there before for other matters, but I wasn't sure if they could help me with this one. I will have to try to get in contact with some people tomorrow :)

My now husband was stationed there for about 3 months- although Oklahoma City is kinda dead- I loved going there. There is a fantastic mexican restaurant on the main strip and a few good bars- that is if you plan to go into Oklahoma City. I did not get too familiar with Fort Sill itself but I remember lots of deer? or elk? :)

Ah sweet! I'm so glad there is someone that's still there :) Haha. I've looked at the site and I know there have to be thousands of people there, but I just don't see as many as I happen to see based at other places. So how is life there? Where are you from originally? I'm trying to get information about housing there right now, as I'm a little worried about where we're going to be living and whether it's going to be house/apt., etc. If you have any info. on that, it would be extremely helpful. I look forward to hopefully meeting you sometime in the near future then if you're still there. Thanks in advance!

It's pretty nice here, I like it. It does get kind of boring at times because there aren't lots of 'recreational' things to do, but I guess I'm just used to being in a big city. I'm from Louisville, KY, so there was always something to do there. Anyways, I can't tell you what is going on with housing right now. They are building TONS of new houses (some finished, some not) and are closing down the neighborhood I am currently in, great huh? And we still have heard nothing about getting our new house, although there are people moving out around us daily. :rolleyes So for now, we are just waiting. If you have to off post, let me know and I can give you some good recommendations on places to rent from. Yay! I'm so excited you are coming here? What date are you coming, do you know yet?

Ah Sarah, I'm sorry to hear about your housing situation! Are you living on post? We are going to be living off post, at least for the time being, until we can get on the list. When he is deployed, I'd like to live on post for the safety factor, but right now, it's not a big priority.

I know what you mean about the big city living... I'm coming from about 30 miles from Nashville, TN, so I'm a little anxious about it all :ohno but I can deal with it. When I moved to WV (the town my DH is from), the pop. is only about 980, so I know what it's like to live in both worlds, hehe. I'm up for anything. I'm just really excited.

As of right now, we're not really sure when we're going to have to be there, but we're probably shooting for around the first of Feb. in order to find a place before he has to report. He's been tasked out, so I haven't gotten a whole lot of information about the whole move, when they are supposed to be here to pick up belongings, etc. Is your DH there with you or is he currently deployed? I'm hoping mine will be able to stay for a good amount of time once he's back. Well, I'll quit with the barrage of questions and info. now :) Talk to you later!

Yeah, we're on post now. We lived off post the first year and a half we were here, then they offered us a house a month before DH was deployed :rolleyes Gotta love their timing! Then I moved back to Kentucky while he was gone, and now we're back here. It was quite an ordeal trying to get the house we are in now, long story, I'm sure I'll go into that sometime later, lol. Most of the units here are just returning, so if that time does come for you guys, let's hope it won't be for a while. DH's unit is closing down, and although we haven't heard for sure where he will be going, we are 98% sure it's still going to be here. I'm praying he doesn't get switched to one that already has orders to go. I don't think I can handle him leaving again so soon. Are you guys looking for a house or apartments? How many bedrooms? Have you looked into any places yet? Okay, I'll stop rambling now, lol.

Wow, that does sound like a crazy ordeal! Esp. bad timing if you were moving back home for his deployment :duh Oh well... that's the Army for you. We have looked into a couple different places, but since my DH took his sweet time getting my POA (which NEVER got mailed) it's all on him to get housing and moving set up... I have my eye on a house right now that's on the scogginsrealty.com website (we'll need at least a 2 bed for additional storage/office space), but of course I can't do anything about it without that POA. Now I bet he wishes he would have done it sooner :vent

I'm going to try to put our names on the on base housing list as soon as we arrive, as I don't plan on moving back home when he gets deployed again... I'll be 21 soon and I really can't afford to put off school any longer. I've been moving back and forth to help family, and while I love them dearly, I just need to take care of me for a while. How is the housing on base there? I think I read on one website they were going to be doing some renovations? I guess I will see soon enough :teehee Well I hope that your hubby gets to stay around for a while... how long has he been in? How many children do you two have? Well, I'll quit with all the questions, LOL. It's just really nice to know that someone is out there! Talk to you later :)

Oh no! That stinks! I hope it isn't too much trouble for you getting a place!! I have decided that if DH leaves again, I won't be moving back home again either. OMG the new houses here are sooooooooooo nice!! The ones we are in now are good, but they aren't like the brand new ones, lol. I am so hoping we get one of those soon! Andrew's been in now almost 3 years, we still have at least 3 years left, depending on what he decides to do after that, lol. We have one little girl right now, Madison, although we're hoping to start trying for another in February! :yahoo I'm so excited! LoL. Oh yeah, and just a little tip while you are looking for houses, obviously not all of the houses are on a numbered street, but the higher the street number (or that area) the better, lol.

I really hope we don't have too much trouble either :rolleyes I wish we could have gotten this taken care of a while ago, but men... what can you do? I need to call and see if I can go ahead and get on that list then if the new houses are going to be up for dibs soon! Maybe we can get into something semi-decent :teehee I don't really ask much, as long as it's clean. I've been looking on the website, but I must be missing it somehow; do you happen to have the number for housing there?

Your daughter is very cute! I bet you're so excited about TTC in Feb. DH and I have been talking about it and he's coming around, so we'll see what happens with us. :hairout Thanks for all your help and information!

Oh gosh, I know what you mean. I usually don't depend on my hubby for anything like that, lmao. The houses are definitely clean, even the one we're in, which is very old, is VERY clean. It was 10x's cleaner than the house we rented in town! I do have that number, but I'll have to wait until my hubby gets home. It's in the phone book, but I always forget what it's listed as, so I have to ask him, lol.

And thanks for the compliments on my daughter! She was a little surprise, so I don't know what it's like talking hubby's into them :giggle

I'm glad to hear that! I was a little worried, but I know that my mom told me when she lived on base at Benning, they inspected everything practically with the white gloves. I just hope I can get on that waiting list soon! How long were you on the list before you got moved into your new home? Eek. :hairout Too much going on this time of year! LOL.

We got on the list in July/August 2004, and then in September-ish 2005 they were going to give us one, however, DH was leaving in October, so we passed, lol. So I got one right before he came home. But I don't know how things are moving along now. You may be able to ask them when you call and talk to them, how long they think it may be.

Hey Sarah! Sorry I haven't talked to lately... things have been a little hectic. I haven't gotten any dates yet, DH has been slacking a little in the paperwork dept. :) But he says that he's going to be talking to them about everything concerning the move tomorrow, so hopefully, I will have a timeline soon. We're probably going to need to get to OK around 30-31 to look for a place... I tried calling housing and apparently someone's voicemail was full and no one had been appointed to recieve calls? So they just hung up on me, LOL. :shock Have you had any luck with them yet? I've noticed you talking about TTC, how's everything going?! Everyone's got the baby dust going around here, hope they sent some your way, :teehee. Well, I hope all is well, I'll talk to you soon, girl.

I can't believe we'll be there in a couple of weeks! Well I hope you're doing good and everything is going well with TTC :) Good luck! Talk to you soon, girly.
