So DB is likely to go to Hawaii for a couple of weeks at the beginning of December for some training. While he's at the Navy base over there, I want him to get me some cool souvinier. I don't want the generic hoola girl for the dash (someone has already gotten me that!), but instead some hand-crafted and beautiful. Probably jewelery.

Do any of you know a great shop or place to get locally crafted, Hawaiian-influenced jewelery from? Or do you have any other suggestions as to what I might like or ask for? And where I can tell him to go specifically to get it? :D Thanks!

They do actually have Hawaiian bracelets that are very nice... but they can also get pretty pricey. Not sure where you could get it on Oahu since I was raised on Maui but you can probably get it at any jewelry store. Not sure if that is what you are looking for but I know a lot of local girls over there love to get those. :D

What do they look like exactly? At the very least, I'll just give him a description and he can hunt himself.

There are a lot of different kinds and most people put their names on it... there are also pendants which are pretty too. Here are a couple sites which have kinda what they look like. :) I think the main company or store for it is royal hawaiian heritage jewelry. Not sure I never got one for myself I'm not much of a jewelry wearer but they are very pretty. :D

The swapmeet at the stadium has a lot of neat handcrafted items for good prices. Its right near the naval base on Oahu. The NEX also has some pretty cool Hawaiian stuff. Those would be the two places I would have him look.

I really love tha Na Hoku website and all of their stuff. The plumeria and hibiscus flower jewelry especially. However, I doubt he wants to spend $150+ on a piece of jewelry for me. Ha-ha. But I'll show this stuff to him so that he has a good idea.

What is a swapmeet?

Swapmeet is like a big garage sale with a bunch of people selling stuff in the same place. I went to the one on Oahu before and he will probably be able to find some stuff over there too. I forgot all about that :duh

Is it really like junk from around the house? Or are local craftsmen selling their wares too?

Ooh no it's not all junk... sure some people go to sell their house stuff but it's also craftsman and stuff. They also have like clothes there that people make or whatever that arent used. He should check it out they have some pretty neat stuff. It's not always the same people but sometimes you do have the same people coming back. :)

So would you say that "swapmeet" is just another term for "flea market"?

The NEX sells Hawaiian jewelry. How about gold Plumeria earrings? Or a gold Plumeria bracelet. They're mighty pretty!!! :D The NEX also has an Aloha souvenir shop on the bottom floor in the rotunda area. Hope he's able to find you something nice. :)

I say NEX or definitely the swap meet! They have everything there and good prices. Do not have him go to Waikiki, everything is more expensive down there.

no its not junk. its actually vendors that come and sell stuff just for cheaper prices then normal. you can find some really neat stuff there and its a fun way to spend a saturday! i miss that!!! i think they have those bracelets there and the rings too, if thats what you are looking for. but if he is into knifes and swords and stuff.....he may be coming home with a lot of that....they have several stands with that stuff and if he is anything like my hubby then he can spend a while there lol. but yeah i think the swap meet, nex (the wyland store is in there) or if he wants to go a little more touristy down in waikiki they have the international marketplace and a bunch of other stores in that area. but it really depends on what you are looking for and how much he wants to spend. i just moved from pearl harbor, so i can help if you need. and vinnysgirl was my neighbor out there and she is still there, so she will know some stuff too. hope i helped!

p.s. at pearlridge mall (i think the uptown part) they have a hanai'i bear store. its like build a bear but the hawaiian version. its cute!

As the other ladies mentioned....

The NEX ~ Maui Divers is there...I love their jewelry. Now on extended hours until 10pm. They have the Pick a Pearl.

The Swap Meet ~ (yes another name for Flea Market.) Keep in mind it is only opened W ~ S ~ S from 6am or 7am until 3pm....unless the Warriors have a Football game then it closes early.

I would also recommend Wal Mart. There is a selection of Hawaiian Jewelry....with the Holidays....the department is usually open later. The stores here are 24 hours

~~~
In regards to the International Market Place....personally I found the same stuff cheaper at the Flea Market.....If I don't have to go to Waikiki I don't.
Hey girls, I showed DB the link to those pricey plumeria, and hibiscus rings that I love from Na Hoku! Ha-ha. I think he thinks I'm expecting one of those $300 rings or necklaces. He's like "Yeah, baby, those were real nice. Diamond encrusted plumeria and everything.." :lmao I tried to tell him a million times that I don't need anything so expensive, that it was just that type of design that I liked... But I'm not sure he's convinced.
He called me yesterday and said that he's been looking at the flower jewelry over there. So we'll see what he decides on! :giggle
Have him check out the BX or NEX, that way he doesn't have to pay the tax!! They have kiosks at the BX and I believe they have some at the NEX (I stay OUT of that place). I know they have a shuttle that goes to the NEX from Pearl Harbor though
He says he's going or has gone. I dunno. He's being very tight lipped about it. But I know that he's mailing all of his presents for his family tomorrow, so I think his shopping is done. We'll find out at Christmas! Only two more weeks!
