Four Shot In Annapolis Mall
Saturday, November 18, 2006
WBAL Radio and The Associated Press
Four people were shot in what some witnesses said appeared to be a gangland-style attack in the food court of a shopping mall just outside Annapolis Saturday evening, and at least one was critically wounded.
Two victims, including the most seriously injured, were flown to area hospitals, said Lieutenant Roy Phillips, a spokesman for the Anne Arundel County fire department. Anne Arundel County Police communications told WBAL News that the other two wounded persons were taken by land to Anne Arundel Medical Center.
It is known that two of the wounded persons were male.
Police communications told WBAL News that just before 7:15 p.m., two teenagers were fighting. One of them took out a handgun and opened fire on the other one.
An off-duty U.S. Secret Service agent was in the food court and exchanged gunfire with the shooter. Both of them were hit, but the extent of their injuries is not clear.
Ray Leone, manager of the Borders Books & Music, which is located across from the food court, said he heard at least 10 gunshots. Several of his employees were in the food court at the time of the shooting, and they told him an elderly couple was hit by stray bullets.
He said he believed the shooting, which happened in front of a Panda Express, was gang related, and that the shots sounded like they came from an automatic weapon.
Dozens of people ran into the store after the shots rang out and were "very panicked," Leone said.
"It's really not very normal, way out of the commonplace," he said.
Anne Arundel County police closed the mall and ordered shoppers to leave over the public address system. Police tape was strewn around the food court, where meals sat unfinished on the tables and personal property was left behind.
Alexandra Langtry, an employee at the mall's concierge desk, said it was the policy of management not to comment on ongoing investigations.
The Westfield Annapolis mall is located just west of the Annapolis city limits and has 270 stores including Macy's, JCPenney and Borders Books & Music. When it opened in the late 1980's, it was known as the Annapolis Mall.
