View Full Version : 38 Week Appt
amandalaine 12-06-2006, 05:53 PM Sucked! Granted, I got an u/s and got to see him, but they're estimating him to be around 8.9 lbs. They checked the cervix, still thick and closed, and he hasn't even descended into my pelvis yet. So I was told that the chance of a C-Section is now much higher due to the size and position of him. So yea, not a totally great afternoon. I was REALLY wanting to not have a C-Section, but now it's a lot more likely. I have my appointment next week on Thursday, and I think that if there is no change except for baby growth, then I'm going to see if they can just go ahead and schedule me to have it done on that Monday...I'd rather do that than go into labor just to have an emergency one and then be stuck in the hospital on Christmas. It sucks, but at least we're both healthy, and that's what matters the most.
Kaymara 12-06-2006, 06:08 PM It CAN happen overnight so do not stress too bad yet. Ethan was descended at 37 weeks and I was 1cm dialated and 50% effaced at that appointment and I STAYED the EXACT same even at my 40 week appt. It wasnt until I was 41 weeks and 4 days that I went into labor. Granted I DID have an emergency C-section but that was because my pelvis is small and he got stuck in there...
So dont get discouraged yet
Meghann 12-06-2006, 06:18 PM :hugs I'm so sorry about all that! It is good news that you and he are both healthy, that's what matters the most at the point. I really am sending you tons of :goodvibes to get things going for you! :) My next appt. is also on Thursday, so hopefully you'll be further along than me! :teehee
Debra 12-06-2006, 06:24 PM I'm sorry you didn't hear what you wanted to hear. Just remember that the U/S's at this point in the pregnancy are not always accurate. They estimated DS at 41 weeks to be about 9lbs. He was 7lbs 10oz.
And just because you have a big baby doesn't mean you will automatically need a c-section. Don't let them force you into a c-section just because the baby is "big." And I personally would not consider an 8lb baby big.
Hang in there! :hugs
Donna 12-06-2006, 07:39 PM trust me.... you dont want an emergency c-section!!!!! it's better when it's all planned out. hopefully he will come down on his own... but it looks like you have a stubborn one!!!!
kristy 12-06-2006, 08:12 PM my oldest was 8 lbs 15 oz full term and my youngest was 8lbs 8 oz two weeks early. good luck hun. itll happen soon
Scarlett 12-06-2006, 08:13 PM I know someone who was just told her daughter would be 10 pounds plus because of the U/S....she opted to try a vaginal birth and her daughter was 7lbs 14oz. no problems. Please do not have an elective c/section....the U/S have never been right for anyone I have known....

it was too low for me with Gabe.... it said 7.7 lbs. he was 9.4lbs
CoffeeGirl 12-06-2006, 08:31 PM He just may not be ready to come yet-I will keep you in my prayers sweety:pray
Cherrish 12-06-2006, 08:38 PM It's not over till its over....don't let them force or talk you into a C-section just because your baby is big (anything over 7 pounds, I consider big, because DD was only 5 lbs. 13 oz.)....there's still plenty of time for him to come down, and for you to start effacement.
I needed an emergency C-section, and looking back, I'm just glad they got her out and she was healthy.
amandalaine 12-06-2006, 10:06 PM As far as them "talking me into" one, it's not so much that, as I would rather not be stuck in the hospital over Christmas and would rather have some time to recover before family gets here, even though it won't be very much time of recovering. Plus from what I'd heard, planned C-Sections are better in regards to recovery versus emergency ones, and with it looking very likely of having to have one in the end anyway, I think I would rather have it planned. I know that a lot can happen between now and then, but I'm at the point now where I just really need to prepare myself for one.
kristy 12-06-2006, 10:09 PM :hugs i hope things go as planned for you :hugs
Veronica 12-06-2006, 10:30 PM Amanda, its good to 'prepare' yourself for a C-section, but let nature take its course...try not to worry about being in the hospital over the holiday, in the end that will be the last thing on your mind...family will understand I'm sure. But trust me, you dont want a C-section...The docs told me Val was 11lbs and she was 7lbs 10oz when she was born...you should be able to give birth fine...usually c-sections are ER first and elective after that, but after my experience I will try for a VBAC next time...Preston will come soon enough, and all of this stress will be a distant memory :(
Heather 12-06-2006, 11:17 PM Walk, walk, walk! let gravity do some work! I must have walked 20 miles in the two weeks before my son was born. We walked everywere.
