View Full Version : Your FIRST labor.
Miaka 12-08-2006, 01:49 AM Did you do it naturally, have that.. numbing shot (i don't know how to spell it) or did you have to get a C-section?
AND is going into labor naturally hurt as bad as people exaggerate it to be?
leftover 12-08-2006, 02:00 AM oooo... Labor was great.... I white knuckled it through the whole thing..
I asked for an epidurial, but they told me "the window was closed" I told to break the goddamn window... They laughed at me... Appearantly I was dialated too far..
I asked for a local pain killer ( I wanted a shot of novacaine in my cootch) and they laughed at me again...
It was a breeze, a piece of cake... :lmao
I dunno why some women complain so much about it.:lmao 15 minutes after delivering LJ I was dressed, had my hair done, my contacts in.. I had a roast thawing in the sink that needed to go in the oven.. Honest to God truth.. I had a roast to cook..
:lmao Honestly? Next time I'm gonna do it at home and save $2000......

No, I'm suffering from severe insomnia tonight... slighty delirious ..but thanks.....
Donna 12-08-2006, 02:16 AM I started going into labor with Savannah at 27 weeks. It HURT!!!!! When it first started, i thought i just had gas.... that was at 3pm. by 11pm, Walter found me curled up in a ball in bed, crying like he has never seen me cry before. i was in so much pain, that i couldnt get his attention from our upstairs bedroom..... went to the hosp. they got them stopped, but i was dialated to 2. i went for 9 more weeks. my water broke at 36 weeks, she was complete breech and had her bowel movement. so emergency c-section, with an epidural.
When my water broke it never hurt but once the contractions started it definately hurt. Must not have hurt enough though since we intentionally got pregnant again 3.5 months later :lol
Germanchick 12-08-2006, 02:27 AM I just had my first child 5 weeks ago. My 'plan' had been to get an epidural but things didn't go as I had planned. lol I was induced at 39 weeks due to pre eclampsia. I was already at 3cm at that point without having had any noticable contractions. They broke my water at 7.30pm. Later that night I got some pain medication through my IV to take the edge off the contractions and so that I could try to sleep. That wprked so well that I didn't feel any contractions. After 4am things started progressing so fast (I went from 3 to 5 to full within maybe 15min) that I couldn't get the epidural I had planned on getting. BUT it really wasn't bad at all. The worst thing was that I was so exhausted by the time I started pushing because it was now Thursday morning and I had hardly slept all night cause the nurses kept waking me up to turn me from one side to the other. Painwise labor wasn't nearly as bad as I had feared.
Miaka 12-08-2006, 02:30 AM Er.. what about having 'bowel movements' while trying to push your baby out? :inshock Can they do anything to prevent that from happening? :teehee
Kristin 12-08-2006, 02:54 AM With Ethan I went into labor on my own at 22 weeks and it was very painful, I had to be put on medicine to get them to stop. But then at my due date I had to be induced and had an epidural but I had windows of pain and I spent a good deal of time SCREAMING, they had to literally move me to the end of the hallway and close doors. The nurse knocked me out with stadol until it was time to push, I then started cussing at my obgyn because Ethan was stuck, he asked me if he could help me out with the vaccuum. After 22 hours of labor and a ton of screaming and medicine that made me very sleepy I don't remember any visitors or anything from the night.

you made labor sound scary. :ohno
It is scary when it is your first and even your second time.
mara_jade81 12-08-2006, 05:02 AM Well my first labor was with my second child, never went into labor with the first one. Had to have an emergency C-section.
I went completely natural with my son and so glad that I did and glad that I had a VBAC. Honestly I didn't think the pain was all that bad. The worst part lasted the shortest amount of time. The worst part was being tired, I just had to push through that. Mind over matter sort of stuff.
Cherrish 12-08-2006, 07:07 AM Labor is scary the first time....you don't know what to expect, and yes, it is painful....but its the only way to get the baby out (unless you had a planned C-section), so get ready for it.
The best way I can describe labor pains is like menstrual cramps...REALLY BAD cramps...except it involves every muscle between your back and front, and you know its a contraction when all you can do is...well, contract. I was contracting so hard I was seriously seeing stars....
My labor was 19 1/2 hours long....and I ended up being unmedicated for 12 hours of it. I couldn't get an epidural until I was about 4 cm dialated.....my water broke at 10 AM, and I didn't get to a 4 until about 7:30 that night.....but that's as far as I was able to dialate.
I ended up needing an emergency C-section because I started to show signs of infection, and DD was born at 4:14 the next morning.
If we're scaring you, then the only advice I have for you is don't ask anyone about their labor....because it we will tell, and it will scare you.
Kaymara 12-08-2006, 08:50 AM My birth story is up top under the birth story thread but with my son I went into labor naturally. Then it stalled. Had to get pitocin. 3 epidurlas none of which worked. After 18 hours of labor and 2 hours of pushing I had to have an emergency C-section
Kristin 12-08-2006, 08:57 AM you made labor sound scary. :ohno
Well, I was only 17 at the time and scared and the pain was something I had never gone through before and I didn't know how to control myself. My other 2 labors were not even CLOSE to that bad. Don't let my story scare ya!
MelissaMc424 12-08-2006, 09:05 AM Ok, labor pains suck, and they're worse when they're egged on by pitocin. I was induced.. I had the epidural after several hours of contractions.. went through labor until Camryn and I were in distress and feverish, then had a C-section.
My first labor was 12 hours and I was like the typical woman in labor, screaming bloody murder through most of it. I went all natural. Pushed for 2 hours and then she came out. I was exhausted and for me the soreness in my legs lasted for weeks. They would just start shaking.
My second one, I proudly say I kicked butt on those contractions. I went with the Bradley Method and was in labor for 6 hours. I had the lights in the room very low and candles lit and the nurses didn't believe I was in labor because I was so quiet. I told my husband to get the Doc I had to push and the nurse came in and said " Honey I'll check you but you have a long ways to go." After she checked I was 9 cm and she RAN to get a doc. There were actually complications with my second daughter, so I won't tell you that horror story. :inshock
I think one thing women should keep in mind is labor wears you out and you need energy to push, so if you are having a long labor I think it's better to opt for an epidural so you get some rest in between. My labors were not that long but I know some women who had over 20 hours and I cannot imagine pushing after that long.
kristy 12-08-2006, 10:07 AM i was induced and i had an epidural. pushed for a while and had him. was pretty long process. with the 2nd, he came on his own, altho i had back labor for about 2 weeks, was in the hospital bout 6 times with false contractions. water broke at 10 pm, got admitted about 10:30, finally got my epi about 2:30 am, it made me VERY numb, too numb or i woulda had him sooner, the ass left at 5am, dr came in at 5:30 said we'd start pushing at 6, the ass came in to say bye at 5:30 i said i am pushing in 30 mins cant you wait, he said no i have to go, left for the wedding, i started pushing at 6 and keith made his presence known at 6:15am. That boy was ready to come out! but appearantly he did not want his daddy there. still doesnt. i had good experiences with both pregnancies. no problems not too much pain.
Germanchick 12-08-2006, 10:17 AM Er.. what about having 'bowel movements' while trying to push your baby out? :inshock Can they do anything to prevent that from happening? :teehee
If it happens it happens and there's nothing you or anyone else can do to prevent that. For many women it's just a normal part of the birth process and the doctor and nurses have seen it before. I don't even know nor do I care wether or not it happened while I gave birth. You'll be too busy concentracting on pushing at that point to even think about that.
TrishaM 12-08-2006, 10:45 AM I had a great L&D. I got an epidural about 4 or 5 cen. Still felt my contractions, but everything was a walk in the park. I will tell ya this, those contractions hurt like a son of a bitch!
dollface 12-08-2006, 12:52 PM Labor is very different for everyone. My first was a planned c-section, however, I was in labor for about 2 hours....the pain was pretty significant but not as bad as my second. My second had me crying and SCREAMING (yes, I probably sounded rediculous) for about 4 hours with medication (some twighlight stuff)...it was the most mind-numbing pain I have ever experienced and I will never forget it. After I had the epidural and ALL was better! For this one....I am a little scared because of my previous experience but I am ready for it. I do know that I want to be pumped full of as many drugs as possible....ROFLMAO.
As mentioned before....asking for experiences of others may scare you but if you are like some (and me) hearing the worst somehow made me feel better because I knew it was somewhat "normal"...lol.
Oh...and for the other question...I heard they can give you an enema(sp?) prior to labor to make sure you don't have any "accidents".
brea~mama2zay 12-08-2006, 12:59 PM My water broke when I was almost 40 weeks, I never felt a contraction, I went to the hospital and got my epidural at 5cm. I progressed to 9cm and then my cervix started to swell and my baby was HUGE so we had a c/s. My c/s sucked b/c they knocked me out since I could feel them cutting so I was asleep when my first ds was born. Recovery from c/s was pretty rough the first few days, but it could've been worse I'm sure. With my next pregnancy I'm going to attempt a VBAC.
Michelle 12-08-2006, 01:03 PM With my first I had an epidural. I was in an extreme amount of pain b/c I had back labor and it was awful.
NavyChiefs_Wife 12-08-2006, 01:09 PM I did it all natural and I will say it hurts. I had a lot of back labor and it was horrible because you aren't able to get comfortable. But I can't really complain a whole lot cause it could have been worse, I was only in labor about 3 hours before my daughter was born, and it didn't take me long to have her, about 5 or 10 minutes and she was out.
CMPCAP 12-08-2006, 01:37 PM I was induced but originally I was on cervidal (not sure of spelling) to help me dilate ( I was closed tight at 2 weeks late) so once I was at 4 cm they started me on potocin. I was in pretty bad pain so they offered me a epidural at noon the next day and that helped me rest for about 2 hours. I then got sick (infected uterus) and was throwing up and running a 102 temp. Then back labor started. It is the worst thing you can imagine. I couldn't breath or anything when it would hit and it was one right after the other. It probably only lasted about 20 minutes before they kicked up my epi (Thank God). I then pushed for about 5 hours and they used a vacuum to get her out. It was long and painful but as soon as I was done I was ready to do the whole thing again. The pain was gone as soon as her little head came out.
Labor is different for everyone. I knew what to expect since my mom and sister had bad, long labors. I tell you what though, no matter how hard it hurts there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I really was ready to do it all again even after almost 41 hours of labor. I was also scared to death of labor. It lived up to what I was expecting but what a great little package you get. It makes it all worth while.
Victoria 12-08-2006, 02:30 PM I had my son vaginally with an epidural. I held out as long as I could and got the epi at 7-8cm. I was afraid of tearing without and meds so I held out as long as I could so the epi wouldn't wear out...
I had a midwfe, so I highly recommend having a midwife whether going all natural or plan on getting an epi, if you pregnancy allows it. I was very highly low-risk.
My experience was sooooooooooo AWESOME!!!!!!! I was laughing so much all throught the who pushing process. :D
armychica06 12-08-2006, 04:28 PM Labor- I loved it. Can't wait to do it again!!!
leftover 12-08-2006, 06:40 PM If you don't want to poop on the floor, you can request an enima early on...
Victoria 12-08-2006, 09:59 PM I didn't push as hard as I should've just to avoid the "accident"....hehe!!! At Tripler, the no longer give enemas...
HEIDI 12-08-2006, 11:22 PM My first labor was horrible......
I woke up in the middle of the night, and I had a strange squirting sensation. I laid back down not knowing what it was and it happened again. I leaned over and told my then husband that I think it was time. Well I went and woke my mom because we were at her place, the wet was not urine, so we decided since we had a 45 min drive to head to Ft Knox Hospital. We headed out and my parents followed. I got there and got all registered and hooked up to monitors, just to have the army nurse come in and tell me "Don't Mrs XXXXXXXXXX, your water isn't breaking, the baby is urinating on you". I kid you not those were the exact words. My mother begun to flip out, saying "there is no way that can be happening" My dad was pissed throwing around his rank... "I'm and E-9" and My then husband was furious... Needless to say they released me from the Army care right then and there. My mom worked for a large pediatrics group at the time, who referred me to a wonderful OB. All of this happened Derby weekend in Louisville KY, Sunday to be exact. Monday I got referred to the Dr, saw him on Tuesday. He asked me if I was ready to have my baby. I was to be induced the next day. Wendsday morning we headed to the hospital. I got hooked up and the contratcions started. The pitocin was dripping, I had my epidural and I still was not progressing. So the dr broke my water, what was left of it was pea green I was told. Infection had started to set in from me not being treated on Sunday by the Army dr's. The baby's heart rate started to drop, and I went in for and emergency c-section. We did not know the sex of our child and it was so cool, as the dr was performing the surgery, he was singing Rockin' Robin, well we all thought for sure it was a girl when he sang , "all the little boy's on Jay bird street", well we had a son. 8lbs, 5 1/4 oz, adn 21 1/4 in long. the biggest baby born that night.
That is where the complications began..... During a c-section you are given a ton of antibiotics and I was given even more because of the state of my amniotic fluid. This caused my digestive system to freeze and collapse. I left the hospital running a 103 degree temp and as pale as a ghost. I was sick. That sunday happened to be Mother's day, all the family had come too see the new baby and I could hardly move. I was accused of "not being able to handle my c-section" well, not too be gross , I could not pass anything from below, it was coming out of my mouth. I got to the er and they started shoving tubes and iv's down me. I was out for nearly 8 days. My dr told me people normally did not survive this, but I was lucky.
When I had my dd, I was petrified of having a c section and had a VBAC, she was simple. The nurse had to run and get him, she was crowning as he walked in.... Her labor was interesting too...
CoffeeGirl 12-09-2006, 12:12 AM With my first I had an epidural.
I did as well:yes
With my first my water broke and I went in to L&D. They started pitocin and 4hours of labor and 25 minutes of pushing she was here. I got some IV pain meds as the overdid the pitocin (With all my labors I have hard contractions but don't feel them until I hit transition, have a very short/intense transition stage and short pushing phase). The dr wanted me to "feel the contractions" so he kept upping it, I hit transition and couldn't concentrate cause so they gave me stadol and phenergan. I've never had an epidural and will never get one - to scary! I didn't tear and had hardly any swelling, my bowels emptied naturally before I hit transition so didn't have to worry about that and within 30 minutes was ready to be up and in the shower.
iceprincessnw 12-09-2006, 02:04 AM my first i was one week over due. went walk mall, ate dinner and i heard my water pop, i was 1 cm, for 18 hrs, with no pain meds, then os sat at 1 15 pm i had emergency c section.
alijahsmom06 12-09-2006, 02:41 AM Haha... Well my labor, I heard my water break, then I called my mother, who had to wake up my dad so they could take me, who then in turn took a shower.. Lol.. Then they finally brought me to the hospital and it looked like I pissed myself.. Hehe..
Then I went to about 2 cm and I told them I wanted an epidural.. Haha.. I sailed through the labor until it got to the part where I had to push and they took me down about 50 percent on the epidural, so after that I felt the entire thing. Painful!! Plus I tore.. Stupid doc couldn't tell that I wasn't big enough, so she let me tear.. Ouch!!! I wasn't over it completely til about 3 to 4 months after my son was born and he is now going on 6 months..
My tailbone pops in and out of place....Trust me on this one.. You do not want to go natural.. Lol..If you do, you have a lot of guts...
