View Full Version : Baby Cereal!?
ImaLuckyWife 12-12-2006, 09:02 PM Hey Y'all! I was wondering when you guys started your babies on baby cereal?? We went to the dr today for Kaylynns well baby visit and the doctor said they dont start them til 6 months old now cause they find that they have everything they need in there formula...and it is linked to childhood obesity:rolleyes ...so yeah when did y'all start im just curious to see.
*Crystal* 12-12-2006, 09:06 PM 6 months here!
Swervesgirl 12-12-2006, 09:16 PM 6 months here too
Brandi 12-12-2006, 09:41 PM shoot, my kids were all eating it by 3 months. :shrug IMO, "everything" is going to be supposedly linked to "something", these days. So, use your own discretion on that. Just like they said babies should be on their tummies, then backs, then tummies and now it's backs again. And now they are saying that SIDS isn't even related to sleep position but to something going on in the brain stem instead.
Cherrish 12-12-2006, 09:51 PM 3 months here too.....we started about a month earlier than what her doctor would have liked us too, but by that time, she was eating applesauce and pears already too, so she said she didn't see the harm, just as long as we held off on introducing other foods until she was about 4 months.
EscosGurl 12-12-2006, 09:55 PM I read that you are supposed to start them at 4 months, but I didn't start ds on it til 6 monts cause he had eczma and that's what the doctor told meto do
MelissaMc424 12-12-2006, 10:30 PM Cam started rice cereal at 3 months. Then she was on veggies and everything starting at 4 months. She had doubled birthweight and everything so they said we were good to go on to baby food!
kristy 12-12-2006, 11:10 PM with Farren at about 4 months with keith, he doesnt like it
We skipped cereal. :dunno do what you think is best.
MichelleB 12-12-2006, 11:33 PM Taylor was around 4 months old.
Sarah 12-12-2006, 11:35 PM Both my kids were about 3 1/2 mos old
Victoria 12-13-2006, 07:04 PM We started at 4 months, but never really gave cereal by itself. I mixed it into peaches and other foods that was a bit runny. :)
I gave her some bites between 4-6 months but didn't start officially feeding her it until she was 6 months. Just didn't see the point in it.
I think it depends on the baby- we usually start anywhere from 4-8 months. If they are eating huge amounts of formula then we tend to start sooner. If they aren't real big eaters then we tend to start later. They say 4-6 months, starting out with single grain cereals and then one new fruit or veggie a week to check for allergies. We have had babies that were allergic to certain things and had to stop feeding them. Some of the babies that we had were such large eaters (they are usually babies who were not fed when they were hungry and therefore have not learned the whole hunger/full/stop eating cycle) that we would feed them young with feeders to help teach them the feeling of fullness. Otherwise they could literally go through a can of formula in a day!
Punchie 12-15-2006, 03:06 PM I started at 4 months since she was taking in 48+ oz of formula per day.
Kaymara 12-15-2006, 03:50 PM We started at 4 months with E. He showed signs of being ready and did awesome with it. We started with runny rice cereal and then runny oatmeal. His fav was oatmeal and he STILL loves the stuff (quaker oatmeal now tho)
Teresa 12-15-2006, 04:20 PM Nathan is 4 months now and I tried the cereal with him the other day. It was very thinned out but for some reason the rice was staying stuck on his tongue. I thought he was ready but maybe not just yet. I think it totally depends on your kid, though. Some are ready very early on and some take a little longer :)
magan2006 12-15-2006, 04:44 PM they say to do it when the baby is old enough to sit in a high chair
MRussell 12-16-2006, 04:38 AM We started Austin on cereal at 4 months, but he had a severe spit up problem so our ped suggested it.
Kristin 12-16-2006, 04:42 PM With all my kids I tried rice cereal first but they got constipated so I moved them to oatmeal and mixed a lil bit of fruit in it for a good taste and all 3 loved it!
airyn1 12-17-2006, 11:57 PM Morgan had issues gaining weight so I would put a couple of teaspoons of cereal in her bottle when she was 3 or 4 weeks old. It made her gain enough weight that it was no longer a concern and she's been perfectly healthy since. As for spoon feeding it to her, I started that a week or so before she was 4 months old. Mara was exactly 4 months old, but she had already eaten mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving and Christmas before that (her birthday is in October).
Kindra 12-18-2006, 01:25 AM I was wondering about this too... My doc says 6 months but Savannah has doubled her weight by FAR! AND she is eating 8 oz every two to three hours. And crying like she is starving. Hmmm... Do you have to start with rice? I had Elizabeth with rice at 8 months and she hated the rice crap. I never mixed it. I just don't want savi to get constipated.
ImaLuckyWife 12-18-2006, 05:01 PM thank you everyone! really appreciate it :)
Leticia 12-18-2006, 05:51 PM we started at 6 months...the rice didn't settle right in her tummy so we just went to oatmeal after that and she did great with that:D
brea~mama2zay 12-19-2006, 10:45 AM Almost 6 months here.
