View Full Version : What has been the hardest thing
To give up since you have been pregnant, or the hardest thing to stay away from?
For me smoking was the worst thing to not do. Man, that was hard. Cause with ds I couldnt even look at a cig without puking, this one.... I had to stop, and it was super hard.
And now I want everything I cant have. :lol Before preggo, it has been FOREVER since I had a bologna sandwich or a hot dog, and now... .omg, makes my mouth water :nutts And runny eggs... :drool With ds everything was so different... :ohno
But I kinda like how they are so different. Its comforting knowing I will have two different personality, styles, and whatever else kind of kids :cloud9
Kaymara 01-01-2007, 03:30 PM Smoking was actually easy to give up this time. Wierd huh? :lol
Umm probably my chai's and iced mochas. I wont even drink decaf (im weird I know) So that has probably been the hardest for me
Brandi 01-01-2007, 03:31 PM I didn't really totally give up anything. I quit smoking before I got preggo with Jaxon so I didn't have to worry about that. I still ate bologna, hotdogs, lunch meat, over medium eggs, caffeine in small amounts (I drank decaf but it still has some caffeine in it), umm.... I don't really think I totally gave up anything. My doctors have always agreed that anything in moderation is alright :dunno
froglove 01-01-2007, 03:39 PM Didnt give up anything. I did drop my Dr. Pepper intake down but still doing and eating everything like before I got preggo. ( except alcohol)
sushi, lots of fish, and very rare meat!!! i live off those things!!
ooh and runny eggs... my daily lo-carb rockstar, and lots of diet coke.
Victoria 01-01-2007, 03:44 PM I didn't really give anything up. I'm not a smoker so I didn't have to worry about that...
At Starbucks, I'd just order my drink decaf instead of regular.
I resorted to buying caffeine-free sodas.
It was actually really simple to amend my eating/drinking habits! :)
I guess the hardest thing to give up with alcoholic drinks like my delicious Mudslides, Pina Coladas, strawberry daquiris, Watermelon Smirnoffs, etc. But even now I don't drink them often:)
~Jess~ 01-01-2007, 03:44 PM Smoking was easy for me this time. I think b/c I wasn't smoking as much. But I've always been able to quit at the drop of a hat. I'm eating and drinking everything(- alcohol) just in moderation. I still drink pop just not as much and I too eat lunhc meat and hotdogs :drool So far this pregancy has been really easy.
=Mrs.AiNokeA= 01-01-2007, 03:45 PM sushi, lots of fish, and very rare meat!!! i live off those things!!

Oooh no I couldnt give up sushi. :scared :teehee Hopefully I'll get preggo when we are in Texas cuz they dont have any good sushi here. :giggle
and very rare meat!!!.
Oh yeah.... :sadeyes I forgot to mention that too. Now my burgers are gonna have to be so dry. :mumble
kaytee 01-01-2007, 03:50 PM Sushi!
Mrs.Bueller 01-01-2007, 04:23 PM Smoking was easy cause I had a reason to quit. But I am a Starbucks Junkie, and I have one right down the street, so the temptation was strong with that, but other than that, um... Sex with lube when DH was home. (TMI?) It agrivated hemeroids.
Oooh no I couldnt give up sushi. :scared :teehee Hopefully I'll get preggo when we are in Texas cuz they dont have any good sushi here. :giggle
yea, i'm a sushi addict. it's a food group itself for me.
navycorpsmanwife 01-01-2007, 04:59 PM caffeine for sure and alcohol has been tough to resist this holiday season.
Chrissie 01-01-2007, 05:02 PM nothing really with my last two. But, with this one I really want a hot dog (yuck!) but, thats what I'm craving. lol.
*Dawn* 01-01-2007, 05:11 PM for me it was orange juice...since I had GD I couldn't drink OJ and that killed me
navycorpsmanwife 01-01-2007, 05:12 PM Okay i feel stupid but what is wrong with eating hot dogs and bologna during pregnancy? Just because the meat is processed?
Brandi 01-01-2007, 05:42 PM Okay i feel stupid but what is wrong with eating hot dogs and bologna during pregnancy? Just because the meat is processed?
I think it's mostly stuff that is put out in articles on the internet. Not once did my doctor ever tell me to avoid either one, with any of my kids :dunno
And I don't eat meat unless it's cooked ALLLLLLLLLLLLL the way through so I didn't have to worry about that one. I hate raw meat :freakout
Kaymara 01-01-2007, 05:43 PM Okay i feel stupid but what is wrong with eating hot dogs and bologna during pregnancy? Just because the meat is processed?
The pamphlet I got from my Dr states Hot dogs can be contaminted with bacteria or parasites and if you eat them only eat them from home and make sure they are well cooked. It states the same for Salami, and liverwurst

Oh ok!!! I was about to say....those meats were never brought up by my midwife either!

Uncooked Meats
Avoid eating raw eggs and meat. This includes lunch meats such as salami and bologna. Pregnant women are more prone to illness that these kinds of foods may carry
one thing these articles fail to mention is that the meats that have been processed are fine. When I brought this up to my doctors here (because I LIVED off bologna sandwiches when i was preg with hunter), they said that the only meats that they would caution me against eating are meats that are not processed. The same goes for the cheese that people are so afraid of eating... if it's been pasturized, it is fine.

It must vary. Because Cohan gave me a pamphlet that states to "avoid" hotdogs, salami and the like. As far as cheese goes I make sure it is pasturized otherwise I eat it.
This is why I wont eat it...
Listeria monocytogenes (Listeria)
Listeria is a bacterium most often found in soft cheeses, unpasteurized milk products, and ready-to-eat or undercooked meat, poultry, or seafood. Listeria can grow even in refrigerated foods.
Listeriosis causes mild to severe flu-like symptoms in pregnant women, who can pass the illness to their unborn child. Infection of the fetus can result in miscarriage, premature birth, blood poisoning and birth defects. Listeriosis can be treated with antibiotics.
:refuse I learned that when I was preggo 10 years ago with the boy.
I never gave up sushi. I was pregnant 2 times while we lived in Japan and trying to give sushi up there is impossible.
The hardest thing for me is slowing down. I get tired and cranky because I cannot do what I want to do.

When I asked specifically, they said the packaged stuff was fine but if I was worried about it, the stuff I should avoid was stuff from the deli :dunno
Kaymara 01-01-2007, 08:00 PM When I asked specifically, they said the packaged stuff was fine but if I was worried about it, the stuff I should avoid was stuff from the deli :dunno
Yeah the deli stuff is bad because it is stored differently. Just you are more susectible to things while pregnant. And I am anal when it comes to alot of things pregnancy wise. I think because of my paranoia and how long it took for E to get here etc etc. I was more lax this time around tho not much....
My problem with lunchmeat and hot dogs is the nitrates and high sodium content. So I steer clear of them. Cohan said to avoid hotdogs but if I cooked them at home and they were steaming then it wasnt a bigdeal. But the sodium content etc is high. Thats like when I asked if I could eat shellfish. He said yeah as long as it was fully cooked but be forwarned of the sodium content and it may make me swell up
I think its like parenting. We all do it differently :lol
Brandi 01-01-2007, 08:15 PM I don't think they ever cared much about my sodium b/c my normal BP is so low I think I'm almost dead :lol Normal BP for me is like 80/60 :neutral :rofl One of my main sources of food when I was preggers with Hunter was sandwiches with lunchmeat b/c with the gestational diabetes, you really are very limited to the stuff you can eat. They always told me that turkey and ham sammys were perfectly fine. I ate them almost every single day :nutts
*~*Cori*~* 01-01-2007, 08:16 PM I had quit smoking before getting preggers with Jer so it wasn't an issue. I think the only real issue was lowering my coke intake and switching to sprite. It was sooo hard. Im more into ginger ale and cranberry sierra mist now so I should be good to go there BUT I am going to need rehab to quit smoking... :sadeyes But if you can do it Kat... I CAN DO IT TOO!!! And I will ;)
*~*Cori*~* 01-01-2007, 08:17 PM Ooo I am way off the charts on my cholesterol even when I was 18 and I never did anything to change it sooo everytime my dr says come in for a fasting blood work I conviently forget... but I have to get it done :(
Kaymara 01-01-2007, 08:19 PM I don't think they ever cared much about my sodium b/c my normal BP is so low I think I'm almost dead :lol Normal BP for me is like 80/60 :neutral :rofl One of my main sources of food when I was preggers with Hunter was sandwiches with lunchmeat b/c with the gestational diabetes, you really are very limited to the stuff you can eat. Mines normally low too but I had such bad swelling with Ethan and it started around 20 weeks I wanted to avoid that. So I refused to eat it. I stuck to chicken salad and have been eating that still to this day LOL. I swear it'll be almost 39 weeks of chicken salad sandwiches! :rofl
*~*Cori*~* 01-01-2007, 08:25 PM Ooo Kris chicken salad sounds sooo delish! :giggle
Kaymara 01-01-2007, 08:28 PM Ooo Kris chicken salad sounds sooo delish! :giggle
It is!!! And baby likes it too!! :lol Everyday I either have a fried egg sandwich on a bagel with some 2% milk reduced fat cheese and no butter. Or I have a chicken salad sandwich on white whole grain bread with not alot of mayo. LOVE it.
BUT I am going to need rehab to quit smoking... :sadeyes But if you can do it Kat... I CAN DO IT TOO!!! And I will ;)
:yes Exactly! I was a horrid smoker girl. I got worse. I was smoking like a chimney when I got back here. And I wasnt ready to quit. Then we found out we were preggo, and it was over then. The smokes where gone, and I was done.
MichelleB 01-01-2007, 09:06 PM Mine was coffee. Yea I drank decaf, but what's the point in that :(
Brandi 01-01-2007, 09:27 PM Mine was coffee. Yea I drank decaf, but what's the point in that :(
MMM< the taste! :hungry :teehee
Potatocup 01-02-2007, 08:10 AM Wine, sushi, and rare steak. i refused to eat steak because i like it bloody. yum.
KevzQueen 01-02-2007, 12:38 PM I've never given up anything foodwise for any of my pregnancies. I don't drink while pregnant, but that is all I avoid.
MRussell 01-02-2007, 01:15 PM I really didn't give up anything, I just tried to drink less soda.
