Anyone there or been there? My friend and her hubby and kids were supposed to be PCSing to Vicenza, italy in May, and just found out today that his unit has been moved ot Bamburg! Anyone able to tell me what it's liek there?

Haven't heard of it. Do you know what part of Germany it is? like east, west, central? I'm the western half of Germany right near France and Luxbourg.

Bamberg is a town in Bavaria, Germany. It is located in Upper Franconia on the river Regnitz, close to its confluence with the river Main.

Geography
Bamberg lies in northern Bavaria, 63 km north of Nuremberg by railway, and 101 km east of Würzburg, also by rail. It lies on the Regnitz river, 3 km below its junction with the Main river. Its geography is shaped by the Regnitz and by the foothills of the Steigerwald, part of the German uplands. From northeast to southwest, the town is divided into first the Regnitz plain, then one large and several small islands formed by two arms of the Regnitz (Inselstadt), and finally the part of town on the hills, the "Hill Town" (Bergstadt). Like Rome, Bamberg extends over seven hills, each crowned by a church. This has led to Bamberg being called the "Franconian Rome" - although a running joke among Bamberg's tour guides is to refer to Rome as the "Italian Bamberg".


Population
Bamberg is home to nearly 7,000 foreign nationals, including over 4,100 members of the United States Army and their dependents.

Bamberg is in Bavaria..my favorite part of Germany IMO ;)

I lived in Schweinfurt, not too horribly far from Bamberg. All the posts are virtually the same. PX, Commissary, Housing, DOD school and CDC. The houses are pretty much all apts. I know though that in Holenfels they are 2 story duplex houses though. I think that bamberg was apartment buildings. If she gets lucky she could get a renovated one :) Have you looked up the site for the post? Germany is a great duty station. My best advice is to get out there and dont be afraid to get those toes wet!

I should be there by late June. Already living in Germany for the last 1.5yrs. Due to Army transformation we gotta move to Bamberg.
I love where I am now in Wiesbaden but I'm also looking forward to traveling & exploring the surroundings near Bamberg.

I wish I could go there again..I lived there when i was a child on base housing until I was 6 or 7..ofcourse i loved living there since thats all i knew but my family has this book of all the beautiful sites.I hope all of you who live or will be living there love it.I know my family did and miss it.
