View Full Version : Diapers
a_devildogs_girl 01-03-2007, 08:43 PM Ok so I'm not even close to having a baby - but I was just wondering...
What are the pros and cons of cloth diapers vs disposable?? What made you choose either one??
Just curious :D
Carrie 01-03-2007, 09:52 PM ive never tried cloth diapers. I just feel for me!!! that disposable diapers work better for my lifestyle. even though they arent cheap they are good. i use huggies :) hope that helps wish i could offer you more!
IgglesmumX2 01-04-2007, 06:09 AM Okay, this may turn into a novel so please forgive me if it does. I started out using sposies (disposables) when both of my kids were born. I still thought CDs (cloth diapers) were just pre-folds and pins like our moms used. When DS was around 6 months old I met some moms through a playgroup who used CD and started asking question. CDs nowadays are so cute and easy to use. And after working the numbers I figured out that I would spend around $2000 per child to put them in sposies until 2 1/2. Now between my 2 kids and their cloth stash I haven't even come close to spending half that.
Also, important to me was the chemicals that I was exposing my kids to in sposies. Silica gel is toxic. I think I read somewhere that a baby ingesting 1 tsp of silica gel can kill them. Now maybe I'm paranoid but that's not something I want around my kids most sensitive parts.
Not to miss mentioning, but not as of big concern to me..sadly, is the environmental impact of disposables. Sposies can take up to 500 years to decompose. Not to mention the fact that each time you throw away a poopy sposie you put that poop in the landfill to be absorbed into the ground and into our water supply. When my kids poop in a CD I flush it into the toilet where it belongs.
Now, I am not in any way bashing anyone that uses sposies. I know that CDing isn't right for everone. I love it though and it works great for us.
Scarlett 01-04-2007, 07:56 AM I love cloth....its nice to never "run out of diapers" just throw in a load of laundry. Cloth diapers are always nice and soft and never hard paper, they are darn cute! so many types and prints to choose from. I have yet to have one poop blow out in cloth diapers.
One of the best things...I have spent about 700$ diapering Alexander in the last 2 years and every one of those diapers is sitting on the changing table waiting for the new baby....700$ to diaper 2 kids untill potty learning is darn good if you ask me. :)
Scarlett 01-04-2007, 07:57 AM oh, the down side of CD.....ITS ADDICTIVE!!!! :) there are always so many cute new diapers.......

AMEN to that! I don't know how many times I've heard someone say..."I started CDing to save $$ but that went out the window"!
instant_oatmeal 01-04-2007, 12:33 PM Where do you find the cloth diapers? Do you have to do anything special to wash them?
IgglesmumX2 01-04-2007, 12:45 PM I have bought alot of mine used at www.diaperswappers.com For new the best place IMO is www.abbyslane.com She offers a layaway program and has the best customer service!
As far as washing, they do need to be washed seperate from your regular wash and you do wash them a little differently but it's not that hard.
MichelleB 01-04-2007, 12:52 PM We used disposibles. It's just easier.
instant_oatmeal 01-04-2007, 01:25 PM Now you've got me seriously considering it for when I have a baby....
Kaymara 01-04-2007, 01:26 PM We use disposables. Just easier for us
Carrie 01-04-2007, 01:54 PM i have a question! this may be a stupid one but oh well. :) lol do cloth diapers have the sticky things on the side? velcrow or whatever they call them or do you use safety pins? im just wondering my friend wants to use cloth and she just asked me and i didnt know!
IgglesmumX2 01-04-2007, 02:18 PM There are 4 main ways to secure cloth diapers. 1) the ol' fashioned pins 2)something called a Snappi. If you want more info on that I can give it. 3) Touch-tape, aplix, velcro (all names for the same thing) and 4) snaps!
Punchie 01-04-2007, 08:06 PM I went w/cloth b/c overall it's cheaper, better for the environment, better for the baby, and they are stinking cute! Do sposies have cute little mermaids or strawberries on them? No! We CD'd Ivy from the get-go and it was a lot easier than I was anticipating w/a newborn. Plus, the few days we did have her in sposies, she got a horrific rash that covered every piece of skin was under the diaper.
a_devildogs_girl 01-05-2007, 01:28 PM Thanks for all the feedback!!
I was talking about this with my roommate, and her comment was that she didn't want to mess with the poop more than she had to and she thought scraping it off into the toilet was gross. I'm thinking that all the points you girls made makes CDs sound really good to me!
HeatherA. 01-05-2007, 01:57 PM Whenever we have one, I really want to do cloth, too. The ONLY thing holding me back is the scraping poop off into a toilet. Hopefully, with a new baby, I will get somewhat over my "poop phobia". I plan on getting one of those sprayers too, so that will help.
IgglesmumX2 01-05-2007, 02:13 PM A) once you have kids you deal with so much poop that it kinda becomes normal and
B) diaper sprayers are GREAT!
2123wife 01-05-2007, 03:07 PM I chose sposie becuase i thought cloth diapering was crazy but now after hearing and reading what everyone says about it I would be tempted to trying it next time. The main thing I love about sposies is the convienence.
Punchie 01-05-2007, 05:42 PM Poop isn't that big a deal once you get used to having a baby. It if can come out of their body, you will get it on you (I've been peed, barfed, and poo-ed on). While they're still only taking breast milk or formula, you don't have to do anything to the poo if you don't want to. I just threw the dipes into the wash poo and all. Once I started Ivy on solids, I had swish the poo off first. There are options so you don't have to get poo on you though -- a diaper sprayer, disposable liners...
Kaymara 01-05-2007, 05:59 PM Do sposies have cute little mermaids or strawberries on them? No! .
My Disposables I use for my son have the lion king all over them ;) So disposables do have cute designs
ImaLuckyWife 01-05-2007, 06:13 PM i think my diapers are cute too! hehe!
Punchie 01-05-2007, 10:31 PM LOL...I've seen some cute designs on sposies, but how cool is it to walk into a fabric store, pick something out, and have it made into a diaper? I have some pretty cool looking dipes from doing that.

LaurenBeth 01-05-2007, 10:46 PM 2 words..... POOP STINKS!!! :poop :puke: :poop
LOL I am disposable all the way... purely for selfish reasons. BUT... on a side note.. I do believe it is more comfortable for the child. They feel wet much less!!

That's how I feel too! Plus, its just alot more convenient and easy to use disposable diapers. I personally could not picture myself scraping poo into the toilet after every diaper change. :refuse
