We all know about the thousands of men and women who are fighting for your freedom in our United States Military. We honor and tribute them everyday, we thank them and even keep them in our prayers. But, what about our military’s Silent Ranks? The wives, fiancées, and girlfriends of the men serving our country. We get no medals, honors of recognition for our strength and bravery. We are seldom even thought of not because no one cares, but because we truly are the Silent Ranks. We are not spoke of in the news, or wrote about in articles. Hopefully after reading this you will think of us the next time you honor our soldiers, sailors, and airmen, and maybe even add us to your prayers. Because, the truth is we truly have one of the hardest jobs in the military.
Almost everyone knows what it is like to love, and to be loved by another person, and many even know the joy of being in love with their significant other. It is an amazing feeling, and in my opinion God’s greatest gift to us all. Now, think about your husband, fiancée, or boyfriend, and the love you feel for them and the joy you get from being with them. We in the Silent Ranks are no different then any of you in that, we love our men dearly and cherish the relationship that we share with them. We love our men and are devoted to them. But, we are also different from the rest of the world, we make huge sacrifices everyday and do it with a smile. Most will agree that yes, the life of a military SO (significant other) must be hard but few truly realize just how trying it can be.
We go months and at times years without seeing our men, without one single kiss. We go to bed each night in his old P.T. sweatpants and favorite t-shirt clutching his dog tags in our hands; our phones set at the highest possible volume placed under our pillows, because maybe, just maybe tonight he will call with just enough time to say “I love you”. We wake up each morning realizing that it really was just a dream and he really is still gone. We lay in bed for a few moments, shed our daily tears, and contemplate the idea of staying in bed until he is home by our sides. But we dry our eyes each day and gather all of our strength, get out of bed, and continue on with our lives the best that we can. When we drive down the road and see a military bumper sticker or billboard our stomachs turn with resentment towards the government for taking our men from us; while at the same time we swell with pride because we truly know the sacrifice our men are making. Our hearts break when we see couples walking through the mall together because Lord knows what we would give to be able to walk through the mall with our man at our side. Receiving a letter simply saying, “I love and miss you, cant stop thinking about you!” is worth more than any dollar amount. We learn all the military acronyms, and don’t think twice when giving military time. We spend Christmas, Valentines’ Day, and anniversaries alone. We make sacrifices everyday only in hopes of a tomorrow spent with our men.
We see the best and the worst of our men, we see them when they are at their strongest points, and comfort them when they are at their weakest, and we love them for this all. We are strong, brave, and courageous, and are fighting a battle within ourselves each day for our country. We hold no formal recognition. We are the Silent Ranks.
