I asked about this in the military talk but I also thought that I would put it in here. DH is considering taking orders for the Frank Cable, I think that is the ship, in Guam. Who is or has been there? What can you tell me? Thanks Again.

I have been out there a few times. My hubby was stationed there for 2 years. The island is very military friendly because both the Navy and Air Force have bases there. It is a beautiful island with lots to do if you like the outdoors, but people usually get tired of it after awhile. Not many family or friends can visit because a round trip ticket is usually $1,200 and its about a 20 hour flight. If you have any other questions, just let me know.

Guam was DH's first station.. he was on the Holland way back when.. Lived on Guam for 3 years.. he said the island isn't bad for the 1st year, but after that it got BORING.. The snakes are pretty bad, and do end up in people's homes. It never happened to DH but he knew some guys that went through it. He also said that the AF base is a much nicer place to shop, their exchange (can't remember right now if it's PX or BX..) is much bigger and nicer than the NEX on the Navy base. One of the upsides was being able to "hop" over to Japan..

Before I moved out there everyone told me how bad the snake problem was out there but I didn't see a single one the whole time I was there. Neither did DH and our friend's who were there for 3 years didn't see a single snake either. While the problem does exist off base, on base they do an AWSOME job at snake control. They have little 'cages' with bait along the fence that are checked daily. I only saw tons of frogs that thrive on base due to the almost non existend snakes. Also while the island doesn't have many birds there are lots of them on the bases (same reason why the frogs are on base not off base).

OKAY girls! We just got orders to Guam...! I am pretty excited but have a ton of questions! let me know if you can help me out! thanks!! ps we are air force if that makes any difference at all. I want to know if its better to live on or off base....what kind of car would do best out there, should we sell our furniture and buy new out there? I have been googling a lot of info, so that has helped, we are super excited though! thanks again

I live in Guam too! I haven't seen any snakes and I live off base up in the mountains. We're Navy and I love living off base but from what I've seen the AF housing is really nice. As for cars, there are a crazy lot of potholes so I wouldn't bring any super low rides over. About selling your furniture, it just depends if you want new stuff. There are three big furniture stores in town and one on each base. I love it here, but we're the outdoorsy (is that a word?) type. If you have any questions, just ask.
