So I have been throwing around the idea but I need to get a better idea on a few things before i put our name on the list. Do we have to physically be in the area to get on the list? How long after we are notified do we have to pick up the keys? TIA

From what I understand you cannot get on the waiting list until your DH leaves his current command if you are transfering! The lady said that all we had to do was fax paperwork to her and we would be put on the list once my DH checks out here!! Did that make sense?

Here in San Diego you can get on the list once your dh checks into his new command and they back date the application to when he left his last command, i'm not sure on that so check with housing. They can give you a house right away or you can hold off for up to 30 days from when they offer to move in. Depends on where you want to live and how long the waiting list is. Our house was empty for two weeks before we moved in because I took 30 days. That is how is it is done here. I'm sure other places/branches can be different. Good Luck.

Yeah.... the thing is we arent transfering until Jan-March. This is for when I move up to NY before dh comes home. He is already stationed there and I dont know if I want to be living off base with how often they go out to the field. BUT I also only have a week window to move and I dont want to get screwed.

When we moved from IL to WA we just called housing and they held a spot for us and we called them at least 2 weeks prior to us arriving here. They were real nice to us and were surprised that we were looking as soon as we were.
