Has anyone else heard not to sleep flat on your back during pregnancy? Does anyone know why its not safe?

Not exactly 100% sure why you shouldnt, but I have heard those old wives tales (they could be true :shrug ) that is restricts blood flow.

Over 20 weeks you should sleep on your right or left side. The weight of your uterus and baby and such can compress a major vein (the vena cava) and thats why they suggest sleeping on your side. (yes it can restrict blood flow) Left side gives you the best flow and thats why it is suggested when having too many braxton hicks contractions and such. +

That being said..if you wake on your back dont panic. Just flip back over to your side. I couldnt sleep on my back now even if I wanted to so I dont worry about it too much

I think mostly its during the last couple months and it has something to do with pressure on an artery, but i wasnt 100% sure on that.

Yup what Kristi said. I slept on my right side most of the time cause the was the most comfortable position for me and a pillow between my legs and under my belly.

I sleep on my back the most. My dr said if it's comfy to me then it's ok. I do fall asleep on my side but end up on my back.

I was told it puts pressure on one of your major arteries, I just sleep on my side. With 2 of my kids I was so tiny in the front I could sleep on my tummy some nights:giggle

how long before they tell you to stop sleeping on your tummy...for me so far it's okay and doesn't hurt but does after 15 min or more

WHen you get uncomfy then stop. Also it is best to try and train yourself to sleep on your sides early on to get used to it. After 20 weeks you will wanna stick to your sides if possible. I sleep with a body pillow on 1 side and another pillow behind me. So when I go to bed I start on my left side with the body pillow partially between my legs and under my belly. Then when I wake to roll over and pee I switch to the other side and put my regular pillow between my legs and have the body pillow against my back. I started this earlier on with E so I could get accustomed to it

easiest explination...it can compress a major blood supply and impede circulation
