View Full Version : Norfolk area ladies!!!
seanswife32 01-16-2007, 10:06 PM Hi Everyone,
DH just got his first set of orders (he's still in A-School) and we are headed to Norfolk. I'm very excited but see that military housing has waiting lists on most places fairly close to base. I really really need help w/ finding housing if we can't get military housing, we are hoping to rent a townhome or house w/ a yard for our dog! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and any other tips on the Norfolk area as well! I've never lived anywhere else before and am very nervous about this move! Thanks!!
Victoria 01-16-2007, 10:11 PM Hey there! Wow...there sure are a bunch of us who are headed to Norfolk this year! WOOHOO!!!
Krisha 01-16-2007, 10:18 PM This is a great site for military off base rentals. There are a ton of listing that participate in the RPP program.
www.ahrn.com
Traci 01-16-2007, 10:20 PM I think the site is apartmentguide.com I am in the area and am more than willing to help.
seanswife32 01-16-2007, 10:29 PM This may be a dumb question but I'm a new Navy wife...what's the RPP program?
Krisha 01-16-2007, 10:32 PM Rental Partnership Program. There are houses, townhouses, and apartments that sign on w/the program. It offers lower rent, no app. fees and lower deposits. This is what I've learned from reading that site. There may be more perks but I'm still learning.
Breezy 01-16-2007, 11:20 PM I personally would have him go check in and then put you on the list
it will go pretty fast cause so many people will be locked into leases etc....
and if you stay where you ar then you should be able to pick up an go when they call
cricketswife 01-17-2007, 12:01 AM also, with the RPP our rent is taken directly out of dh's check. so we never see that money, and i never have to worry about writing a check for rent each month!
Victoria 01-17-2007, 01:11 AM I would also get put on the list...
I would be afraid that our heating bill during the winters would go through the roof.

Our was not bad there atleast no compared to here.
The winter was about 175 max and that was when we would actually have below freezing temps and snow etc...
but the summer was only about 90 or so
Way better than here. The cheapest ours has been here was just last month and we were gone for half of it lol 159 and it is over 300 in the summer with the air set at 78:shock :lmao
christymichelle 01-17-2007, 08:31 AM :heythere i'm in Va beach
navybear 01-18-2007, 09:41 AM Hi seanswife32 I hope you like it here in Norfolk. Dh and I have been here 7 an a half years. And we like it. If you need any thing just ask. I am a stay at home mom of 4 great kids.:welcome
Trescha 01-18-2007, 10:02 AM :hi!!! welcome when you come to VA! :) My dh is stationed @ NOB but we live in VA beach!
seanswife32 01-18-2007, 12:11 PM Thanks everyone! Does anyone have any suggestions on what areas to live in?? I've heard Chesapeake is good but that's about it!! Thanks!
mbfcds119 01-18-2007, 01:37 PM This is the website for the Virginian Pilot and there are usually a lot of rental ads in this newspaper. http://hamptonroads.com/pilotonline/
Welcome to VA. My name is Meghan and we live in the Ocean View section of Norfolk. My boyfriend used to be Navy and was stationed at NOB but now he is Army Reserves and is stationed at Ft. Story in Virginia Beach.
Chesapeake is nice depending on what you are looking for. The most expensive area is VA Beach. I would be happy to help with any questions you might have.
Nicole1788 01-18-2007, 01:39 PM :hi i live in little creek..its in between NAB and NOB
kath37 01-20-2007, 10:37 PM HI! My husband's stationed in Norfolk, we live in Chesapeake. We plan to move to Va Beach soon. I'd suggest either of those places. Hampton is close to the base, but you have to travel the tunnel, so that can be a pain when it backs up. Rent on apts. in decent areas is not cheap, so be prepared. I'm not sure what you're used to. We were from MI and things were a lot cheaper there. Planning to rent a house soon - cost is not much diff. than our 2 bedroom apt. Good luck and let me know if you need any help or have any questions about the area!!

CoffeeGirl 01-20-2007, 11:19 PM Hello, welcome & we're glad your here:D
lemon_parade 01-25-2007, 05:35 PM We're about an hour north of Norfolk, but we are renting off base. If you are looking off base, a lot of places offer military discounts (we save 5% off rent per month). Our BAH covers our rent, water, electric, phone, and cable. As for heating costs, it actually costs more to cool our apt in the summer, but our electric bill has never been more than $125. There's a lot down in that area, I'm sure you'll have no problems :D
BigTexsGirl 01-29-2007, 12:19 AM I'm in norfolk.. i only suggest this place if u want to live by the base... that's why i picked it.. but as soon as our lease is up/or he's deployed i'm moving over to VA Beach..it's a lot nicer..and by that i mean there's a lot more shops/variety in VA Beach/chesapeake.. than in Norfolk...we've got the macarthur center but it doesnt even have a GAP....
