View Full Version : Great Lakes Ladies, I need some help!
christinam 01-17-2007, 02:45 PM we just got told that we have basically 3 housing areas to be in and i need you alls help to kinda lead me in the right direction. If there would be any way you can get me some pictures maybe that would be great like if you live in these areas that would be so helpful. And kinda explain the housing area to me and all that would be wonderful the website doesnt give much information to what they look like . Thank you greatly in advance ladies.
The housing areas are
Nimitz
Halsey
Forrestal(sp) Village
Traci 01-17-2007, 03:17 PM I just moved from Nimitz Village. It was nice. I had a two story, 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath. They started new construction in Forrestal when I left. I didn't mind the house, my only issue was the schools. The entire district is aweful. For that reason I would live someplase else. If schools are not an issue housing is OK. Forrest city is a pain but all PPV is.
Kaymara 01-17-2007, 03:24 PM All 3 areas are next to each other. I am in forrestal. There is alot of construction in here but the new houses are going up and a few are up and they are NICE. I mean REALLY nice. I am in a 2 bedroom stand alone single family home. So no one is attatched to me.
Halsey is right up the road and across the street from the commisarry. And then behind that is Nimitz. if you want to see some pics or what not head to their site. http://www.nsgreatlakesliving.com/neighborhoods.asp
Heather 01-17-2007, 03:27 PM we just moved from Forrestal. we had a 3 bedroom 1 bath house with a single car gargae. I liked it since we had a nice yard and nice neighbors. The schools were alright. my son had great teachers both years and at both schools.

christinam 01-17-2007, 03:32 PM thank you much for the pictures
i went to the neighborhoods website but those are quite what i am looking for is there anywhere i can go to look at the floorplans.
Is there any of the 3 areas that are "nicer" that those are the houses that people want to live in like here in hawaii when we got here everyone wanted to live in the one housing area that was the nicest. I guess that is what i am trying to find out if there is that kind of thing there and the floorplans of the areas too
Kaymara 01-17-2007, 03:33 PM Mine is just like Heathers but a 2 bedroom
christinam 01-17-2007, 03:34 PM are any of them carpeted
Kaymara 01-17-2007, 03:37 PM https://www.housing.navy.mil/onestop/navyonestop.jsp?v=1
Try going there. Just keep in mind it is outdated. There are no apts in forrestal anymore as they have been torn down for the new houses. Eventually they will ALL be the new houses. If you move into forrestal your chances of getting a newer house sooner are greater because they are starting here. So they may end up moving you partially thru your time here but supposedly those in the demolition path get moved to the new houses first.
As far as which is nicer I think they are all pretty much the same. Forrestal has the minimart and gas station in it etc. I think they all have alot to offer especially since they are so close to 1 another. But we have liekd living in forrestal just fine
Kaymara 01-17-2007, 03:38 PM are any of them carpeted
Not any of the houses like I am in no. But some of the floorplans offer carpeting and the new houses are carpeted from my understanding. The new houses are upstairs, downstairs, single family homes
Kaymara 01-17-2007, 03:39 PM Oh and I do have carpeting in mine. We just went to Home depot and bought some and laid it down. No padding under it but it was cheap and it is nice
Heather 01-17-2007, 03:44 PM I thought all the neighborhoods were just about the same. I think some of houses are carpeted but ours wasn't. Forrestal has the school and the mini mart like Kristi said, it also has the auto port if you like to do work on your car. All the neighborhoods are right close to each other. I don't think any one neighborhood is more desireable than another.
We live in a 3 bedroom quad in Forrestal Village that was remodeled (ie carpet)but they are tearing down Jan 2008, which makes me thrilled since we PCS 6 months later. Half our street is under construction and our house is pretty tiny (we were told when we moved in you cannot fit a twin bed in the third bedroom).
I have been told so many different things from housing I have no idea who to believe. "Supposedly" Forest City is not offering new houses to new arrivals but rather to those being moved due to construction. :shrug
I love having a yard for the kids to play in, but I was used to apt style in Japan so any yard was thrilling for us haha!
Good luck in whatever you end up choosing!
christinam 01-17-2007, 04:40 PM maybe it would be easier if i let ya all know what we are looking for maybe that way you can give an opinion on that
well we will only get a 2 bedroom since we only have jaylen and i am in no hurry to get pg again .
we are looking for
a decent yard for our dog and jaylen
like to be kinda close to things not right on top of them but close enough
preferably with carpet
a good size house i know you cant be picky but we would like to have something rather spacious
jaylen will be starting preschool next year
so schools really arent too much a concern right now
Traci 01-17-2007, 06:20 PM I had wall to wall carpet in my house.
Kaymara 01-17-2007, 06:53 PM If you have to have carpet then you may wanna stick to halsey or nimitz. Because you only get 2 choices really. At least you used to. Forest city is really strict and I dunno their policy on offering up houses. I am seriously not lying when I say they are strict. So you may get carpet but a smaller floor plan. Or no carpet and a larger floor plan. Its gonna vary.
As far as a yard goes my back area is very huge. I can fence it if I wanted to which was like 50 feet but we didnt because of the "common" area back there. Its gigantic and tons of space.
Just make sure you come with an open mind. Because Forest city does things so much differently and you may not get offered anything with carpet. Or you may get offered something small but with carpet etc
Heather 01-17-2007, 07:16 PM personally I'd go with a house because you can buy your own carpet like Kristi did if it doesn't come with it. the houses all have very large yards you can fence. I thought our 3 bedroom was pretty big for us. After I left GL My neighbor told me they gave my house to a childless couple because they were out of 2 bedrooms. So you may end up with a three bedroom All the neighborhood are close to each other. I think its halsey thats across the street from the commisarry. shopping like walmart and the malls and what not are the same distance from all the neighborhoods.
christinam 01-17-2007, 09:22 PM Here we have Forest City too and i know they really dont give you too much of an option but we have had so many problems with housing here it has been rediculous i have lived in 3 different houses out here because something ALWAYS happens and they just put you up in a new on and give your old one to someone else. We had a flood and rats from the neighbors and all the crapy things. We are now in a GREAT house that i LOVE but i can only see that there we will not have the same but i wish i could just move the house we have now with us

I can tell ya that forest city here is different then the others. Here they have a STRICT policy on children sharing rooms. So people who move in with say 2 kids end up in a 2 bedroom and their kids share rooms if they are in that age bracket to do so
They also are allowing civilians to move in here. So currently anyone can move in here providing they pass a credit and background check. At first it was soley military. Then it was DoD employees and retirees and now civilians. So its all free game
So dont expect it to be the same. For some reason it really is different. Also they arent so quick to move you for problems nor are they quick to fix problems. Heck they told Heather her garbage disposal was for looks only and not to be used when it broke. And thats because they really dont wanna put money into these since they are tearing them all down anyhow...I had a dead rodent or something in my wall which STUNK and they just sent out pest control to spray some stuff in my house. Didnt bother to find out where it was, what it was etc. The smell, thankfully, is gone now but ewwwwwwwww.

I'll second everything that Kristi said. The Forest City here are really difficult to deal with. Even when my son had health issues that warranted him having his own room, we had to fight tooth and nail for MONTHS for them to allow us to move to another unit so he didn't have to share a room with his sister. We've called in maintenance severals times and have been ignored. I really could go on and on. They are not fun or easy to deal with at all.
I'm in Forrestal, right around the block from Kristi, but I'm in a totally different type of house. I live in a two story, townhome style unit with 4 bedrooms. Our house is wall to wall carpeted and our rooms upstairs are HUGGGGGE, with TONS of walk in closet space, two full baths, 1 half bath and a little nook for our computers in the living room. However, our living room is rather tiny and we have NO dining area at all. We had to cram our breakfast nook into the kitchen because there was no other place for it.
One thing you'll notice is that all of the units around here are really different. There are tons of different styles and layouts for floor plans and units. The one you will probably end up in is the one like Heather and Kristi's b/c I think those are the only 2 bedrooms that are still up. BUT, Forest City said they also have a huge overabundance of 3 bedrooms for junior enlisted so you may end up in Halsey in the type of unit that we had. Those are pretty nice and have a HUGE full basement, but they are older and it shows. We had cracks in our walls and ceilings, detached garage which sucks when it's 20 below 0 outside, no yard in the back and we were also on the main road with cars doing about 45 mph.
They are going to stick you where THEY want you though. You won't have a choice in it.
