View Full Version : Weaning from bottles & milk
When did you start weaning from a bottle?
When did you start giving milk?
I started today w/ the sippy cup & her formula and I can tell it's going to be frustrating at first :suspect She's been drinking from a sippy for a while, but she normally gets water.
I'm going to start weaning her from formula around 11 months.
I'm just curious about your guys experiences...
Rileysmom 01-31-2007, 04:30 PM He used a sippy off and on from 6 months +, and really got the hang of it right before he turned one. We stopped the formula with the bottles, and didn't give him any formula in the sippies, so that it would be a whole change.
Does she not want anything to do with the sippy itself? Or just the milk in the sippy? Have you tried different kinds of sippy cups? Toots wouldn't use the plastic tipped ones, only the rubber ones until he got the hang of it, so maybe give that a shot if it doens't work out after a while?

She drinks out of it fine, she just can't drink it as fast as she can from a bottle, so she gets tired of it and then 5 min later, wants more...than 5 min later wants more :suspect WHen she drinks water, she just takes sips but when she is fed a bottle, she likes to suck that thing down :lol
I've tried different ones, we both..

:roflmao Toots did the same thing, and chucked it after a couple minutes. Have you checked it for a flow gauge? The little white thing, under the lid that makes it spill proof often has a slow flow and a fast flow. I didn't figure this out until last weekend (Ryan knew though :suspect), and that made a HUGE difference for him. Might be worth checking.

Right now she has the Nubs, which doesnt have that, but we do have cups w/ that thing, so I'll try that one instead and see if that helps :thumbsup
~Jess~ 01-31-2007, 04:41 PM I can't get ella to drink milk from a cup. It's driving me nuts. She gets juice in her cups and one bottle before bed. I'm trying hard to break the bottle and have been. :goodluck
Caimbrie 01-31-2007, 04:44 PM Alex had a bottle forever and the older he got the more attached he was.
At 10 months Cameron was completely off a bottle and Wyatt was completely off the bottle by 8 months.
I started giving them all a little milk by 11 months.
I am having trouble with Wyatt :( He had been on soy formula (just like his brothers were) and i switched him to regular to get him used to the lactose. But he is still having some issues with milk and spitting it up when I give him more milk than formula :( He'll be 1 on the 6th.
piggypunkinetta 01-31-2007, 04:51 PM I used avent bottles so I just had to buy the sippy cup inserts. I was never one to really push the sippy cup. If they used it great, if not oh well. Suprisingly though all three of my kids where off the bottle by the time they went to regular milk.

Dylan is two and he still can't handle certain dairy products. WIC gives us the lactose free milk.
*Dawn* 01-31-2007, 05:05 PM Aaron was off the bottle at 7 months and off formula at 12 months
Kaymara 01-31-2007, 05:12 PM Ethan was weaned to milk starting at 11 months. By 12 months he was off formula and on milk. Then I started with bottles and it took me 1 month. By 13 months he was totally off bottles
*Crystal* 01-31-2007, 05:19 PM Reagan had her last bottle the day before her 1st birthday!! We started all milk then also!! About three weeks before her birthday we mixed the formula and milk in bottles, then on her birthday she got milk in her sippys!!

yah, I am worried I'm going to need to buy that for Wyatt. I'm going to talk to the doc about it at his 1-year check-up and see what they think.
Victoria 01-31-2007, 08:46 PM Ethan was off the bottle by 10.5 months.
We started giving Ethan soy milk at 11 months. He just started REGULAR whole milk at 15 months. :)
Forgot to add that I started giving Ethan Lactaid whole milk at 13 months. I was afraid of diaper blowouts and how his stomach would react to cow's milk since he was strictly on soy formula.
MichelleB 01-31-2007, 09:20 PM Taylor was really easy. I honestly had a harder time than she did.
When she was 11 months I starte slowly giving her real milk in her bottle mixed in with her formula. First just a quater of the bottle, for a week, then a half, then 3/4, then all milk. When she was 12 months I got rid of the bottles altogether. At that point she was only drinking one in the morning and one at night, and sippy cups through out the day. So as soon as the box of bottle liners were gone, that was it.
She transitioned just fine. I'm the one that cried :giggle The longer you wait, the harder it is to wean them.
I am weaning Ryan from formula this month and he's been drinking juice in a sippy cup for about a month now, I will start having him drink milk from the cup pretty soon, that's going to be interesting, most of the time he goes to sleep while drinking the night bottle, we will see how that goes.
BLBnJVB3 01-31-2007, 10:33 PM With Breanna I got her off her sippy cup at 12 months. I gave her half formula and half whole milk til her formula was gone. I can't remember how long that was.
With Johnny I introduced the sippy cup at 10 months but he wanted to fight me so he was 12 months when I got him off the bottle. He would chew the mouth piece since it was hard so I got those Nubies and now he'll take any kind of sippy cup. I did the same with the formula and milk for him as I did with Breanna. I think it was 2-3 weeks before I was out of formula.
PrincessBlue505 02-01-2007, 02:44 AM Started weaning her off the bottle at 10 months, and she was completely on sippy cups by 11 months. I didn't give her any milk until she turned 1-that's when I started switching over to milk.
