PITTSBURGH -- The father of a Braddock toddler purposely took the girl outside and left her in subfreezing temperatures after knocking her unconscious because he was angry, police said.

William Lorenzo Page, the father of 23-month-old Nyia Page, was arrested Wednesday night on charges of criminal homicide, kidnapping, false reports to law enforcement and simple assault, according to Allegheny County police.

The suspect was already in jail on indecent assault charges against another child in an unrelated case the night his daughter went missing.


Nyia was found dead Sunday in a field in Rankin, not far from her home on First Street. She suffered from hypothermia and exposure, according to the county medical examiner, but the case was ruled a homicide.

Page told police he woke up early Saturday, found the girl awake, got mad when she would not go back to bed, and hit her so hard she lost consciousness, according to a criminal complaint.

Page then took the girl outside wrapped in a blanket and left her on the porch, but said she was still breathing, according to the complaint.

Tiny footprints in the snow suggest the toddler got up and wandered around before she ended up at the wooded location where she was found dead the next day, about a 10-minute walk from home.

Nyia's mother told police she last saw the girl after Nyia tried to crawl into bed with her parents about 12:30 a.m. Saturday. The mother told police she put the child back into her own bed in an upstairs room.

An Amber Alert was issued about seven hours later, after another child told the parents that Nyia was gone. Police, emergency crews and dogs

This is story is so heartbreaking and I feel really bad for that little girl but a part of it also makes me angry. It's probably wrong of me to feel that way but sometimes I think the "justice system" is really biased. This little girl ended up dead, killed by her father who was arrested immediately and charged with her death. The same thing happened to Angie, the exception being that she was a foster child placed into a foster home when she was killed. Her death was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner within 2 days of her death, they know who did it and yet there has been no arrest made in her case. Makes me really question things. Why is she not as deserving of justice?

The sad thing is, there really isnt much we can do to protect these kids. Just pray that each little being brought into this life is well loved and protected by their loving parents, being biological or not!

That makes me furious! I so angry beyond words right now. How can anybody, messed up or not, do that to a child? A child? My son is only a few months younger then that poor little girl and how can you look into such an innocent face and get that angry? Man, that makes me as mad as all hell!

i heard this early this morning and it just got me so heated and upset! i cant believe what people do, its totally insane! she was so young and helpless poor kid!!!!!!!! This f'n guy is totally sick in his head ugh! What a f'n piece of shit... The mom was there, why didnt she do anything ugh...I could go on but ill stop! Poor baby!

I believe that she was in bed asleep as it was in the middle of the night/early morning. I know that with Angie's case they keep telling us that both parents will be arrested and charged as the foster mom had to know what was going on because her injuries were so extensive. I wonder if charges will be brought against this mom?
