..spent the week in Children's hospital. I wanted to post about it to share what we've learned about small health issues turning into life threatening situations, her baby almost died this week..
Baby Auna is 5 months old, he mother noticed a small patch of dry skin on each cheek on monday night. She put her to bed. When she woke up in the morning, Auna had bloody scabs where the dry skin had been. Mom thought it was excema, and took her to the clinic to get some cream for her face.
The pediatrician took one look at the baby, and said she needs a blood test immediately, and she needed to be admitted to a PICU right away. It wasn't a rash, it was petechiae.
A normal platlet count should be in the thousands. Auna's had dropped to 33. When her mom would pick her up, her fingertips would leave bruises on the baby's skin. They took a 3 hour drive to the Children's hospital in Minneapolis, and by the time they got there, her platelet count had dropped to 3. She was pooping blood, and had completely lost the ability to clot
She had a bruise covering the roof of her mouth from nursing, and they were afraid that if it broke open, the baby would bleed to death. They treated her with plasma, and donated blood for 4 days.
She is going to get to come home for the weekend, but has to go back down to Children's on monday for more blood work. My friend is doing quite well, she a very very strong woman, and can handle things pretty well.. But it's still not over...
And it just started with a little rash on her face :shrug After a day, it turned into something she could have died from. They call it Evan's Syndrome.
