View Full Version : Alaska
Donna 03-11-2007, 05:18 PM OK, DH is talking to one of his old cheifs about a job when he gets out. We would be in Anchorage. My question is, how is the cost of living up there. The job would pay well over $150,000 a year. And just how bad is the weather. I was having issues about moving to South Dakota and dealing with the cold there.... but alaska????
Amber V 03-11-2007, 05:21 PM I do not know anything about Alaska but jsut reading the name of the state gives me good bumps. Good luck to you. I do hear it is beautiful though.
Armylove 03-11-2007, 05:21 PM Not all Alaska is really cold.
Cherrish 03-11-2007, 05:25 PM Yeah, it's pretty and all, but pretty doesn't amount to a hill of beans when it's only light out for about 5 or 6 hours and it's too cold and snowy to go anywhere or do anything.
Cost of living is outrageous, but it's offest by your BAH.
Its extremely cold in the winter, not much to do unless your into outdoors stuff.
Seriously...the weather can be bad. If it's snowing hard enough, the whole base and the whole city pretty much shuts down. Car insurance is outrageous too, as you can imagine with all the wrecks and stuff.
I hated it.

Dh would be civilian at that point. so i am wondering if $150,000+ a year is a good thing or not.
Armylove 03-11-2007, 05:27 PM Maybe you could look up the cenus for the area, and find out..
Cherrish 03-11-2007, 05:28 PM Depends on where you live, I guess. I never looked much into off-base housing when I was up there because the rate of break-ins in so high, but it's not in all areas.
I know the ex is having to move off-base, and the apartment he's wanting to rent is like $1,100 per month.
From what I've heard, Fairbanks is better all around, with TONS more to do than Anchorage. Anchorage is kind of a poor city....they don't even have a super Wal-mart.
Donna 03-11-2007, 05:42 PM hmmm... i just looked at the salary compare thing. including what DH gets for BAH here, we could make $5,000 less and have the same standard of living up there that we have here...... and considering he would be making triple what he is now...... :thinking
leftover 03-11-2007, 05:46 PM I love living where it's cold.. As long as you have a garage for your cars, and you bundle up, it's not bad at all.
I wonder how hard it would be to adjust to the daylight hours being so long in Alaska...

Depending on what you're used to doing during the day, it can be hard. Personally, it started to affect my mood....I got severely depressed and am still coming out of that.
Actually....depression isn't all that uncommon in Alaska. A lot of people complain about the weather having to do with that.
