Is there a possibility that since DH got overseas orders, he gets to have shore duty next in the states? he was told that, but not sure how true it is..

it depends on if the overseas duty qualifies as sea duty. or depends on his job. If mine would have been able to stay an AC, he would have done back to back shore duty cause there were no sea billets for him

depends on his rotation. every one told jason that after going to diego garcia he would be able to pick any orders that he wanted. complete BS! since DG was overseas and counted as a sea duty he had to finish his rotation and we had to take another duty that was considered oconus or take a sea duty in the states and his detailer told us basically we had to take this billet.

don't believe what they tell you. detailers send you where they want you for the most part.

Because for my family my dh is actually home LESS nights on shore duty than when on Sea.
When kids get older and in school and you get them in a routine. If your dh is gone for 6 months you make a new schedule to work without him. When he is actually home only 2 -3 nights every week the kids never know if he is coming or going.
ANd when our kids were younger my dh had the same hours he has here 6-6 be it am to pm or pm to am. If they work nights you have to keep the kids quiet while they sleep and you have them 24-7 reguardless.
We personally begged and pleaded for back to back sea duty billets to be told SORRY YOU HAVE TO TAKE shore duty.
Trust me some shore duties suck.
If you read through past threads you will see just as many wives complain about shore as the ones on sea.

for us shore sucked too. DH's work schedule was one night, one day, one day off. then if he had the mid shift it was one night, one day, the mid that night and slept his day off.

they make shore sound so good but lots of people give it up to go back to sea early
We are on shore now and we already know that even though we are on shore for 3 years one of our years will be taken away so that dh can do an unaccompainied tour cause there aren't enough MAs to cover the billets.
Look at Sarah and Laurie whos Dhs were deployed while on Shore too.

Ok this is more confusing than I thought it would be. Thanks for clueing me in. I'll ask DH to explain things further and if he can't make it clear I'll be bothering you girls again. :D

One thing though: when you didn't have kids, did you prefer shore duty? The unaccompanied tours must suck either way though.

shore for us isn't too bad but jason works shifts which does stink. we've never had a sea duty though so i can't compare. just went from an unaccompanied tour to shore duty in hawaii. shift work is better than having him halfway across the world but i can think of better schedules!

I know,I i guess I should've explained myself. We were on sea duty at Sig.(which at the time was sea duty ,now it's shore) since we were on sea duty for 3 yrs. this next duty station we'll be on shore duty. I know every place is different cause sig use to be sea then they changed it to shore.

No I still and have prefered sea duty over shore.
We have had 2 each and sea was easier for us anyways even before kids

well that is what they told DH that him being overseas was considered sea duty and his next duty station will be shore... but then again, the NAVY changes all the time!!

Definately depends on his sea/shore rotation, as well as if where his orders were cut to, whether he'll be eligible for shore duty. Right now, Dh's basically on shore duty, even though being here counts as more sea duty.

I'm split about which is better. With Dh's schedule, it's like he's out to sea, because his schedule for like the 5 months of 9 months we've been here, he's been on graveyard, so I have to sleep by myself anyways. And if this is the way it's gonna be for the rest of our tour, I'm gonna start hating Shore Duty!!! LOL!

I agree! Shore duty can suck and a Pre Com sucks big time! My husband is on a Pre com and it's just horrible.. he's never friggin home.
