View Full Version : Lottery
DakotaCowgirl 03-17-2007, 10:21 PM Do any of you know that if you wil the lottery will the military member have to get out?
Also, Powerball is up at 183 million....what would you do with it?:teehee
Shaky 03-17-2007, 10:24 PM I'm sure they would give him an honorable discharge.
I would pay off all my bills buy a house in my dream place. Pay off all of my mom's bill. Give some money for charity and save and invest the rest. Ohh and I would buy my self an SUV.
gotstabemel 03-17-2007, 11:08 PM i would move out of the country with DH and build our dream house there, buy a new car, go on a huge shopping spree, travel everywhere!, help out family and friends, save the rest.. and give a little to charity.. makes me feel better to say that lol
chelsea<3josh 03-17-2007, 11:08 PM I have no idea about your first question, but I do know what I would do with it! I would pay off my student loans, buy a house, buy my dream car, take my mom on a fabulous vacation..she's never been anywhere out of the US, and then I'd go on vacay with db and then I'd donate a bunch to the humane society and invest the rest! phew..that's a lot of wishful thinking on my part!
USCGBoxerMom 03-17-2007, 11:13 PM :teehee funny you posted this..we bought a lottery ticket today and were talking about what we would do if we won.
My list is too long....but I can tell you that we would spend about 4-5 mil and put the rest away.
Jennie 03-17-2007, 11:15 PM Dh told me you could buy out your contract. That's my extent of knowledge on the subject.
As for if I won..pay off ALL of our bills, buy Dh his dream car, let my parents retire and buy their house, travel, put some into savings and college funds, donate to charities, and who knows what else.
Dr. K 03-18-2007, 11:24 AM Why would the military have to discharge the person if they won the lottery?? Couldn't they just keep working in the military if they wanted?
HEIDI 03-18-2007, 11:27 AM my dh said they would let you out. You woud become a liaility for the military. We've discussed this several times too, but you have too play to win.
=Mrs.AiNokeA= 03-18-2007, 11:35 AM Why would the military have to discharge the person if they won the lottery?? Couldn't they just keep working in the military if they wanted?
Maybe because if they have all that money they wont care about doing a good job anymore so they wont care. :shrug Might as well let them get out if it's going to be like that but that's just a guess. :giggle
Miranda 03-18-2007, 11:48 AM DH said they would just hav eyou buy out their contract....i watched E once about lottery winners and one ladies hubby was in the military getting ready to deploy in 2 weeks and she won- and bought out his contract and now they live in maui :)
Dr. K 03-18-2007, 12:03 PM But if you wanted to keep serving, could they? I mean, some people go into the military because that's what they want to do. So who's to say you are no longer allowed to do what you want? Especially if you only have a couple years left and you really want to keep serving.
missinghim 03-18-2007, 12:22 PM Nick told me it wasn't an option and that you would have to buy out. Who knows where he got that info from though :giggle
Elizabeth 03-18-2007, 12:25 PM Why though? Even if we won millions, my husband wouldn't be happy unless he was doing his job.
Dr. K 03-18-2007, 12:40 PM Why though? Even if we won millions, my husband wouldn't be happy unless he was doing his job.
I agree. Some wouldn't be happy with a gazillion dollars if they couldn't do the job they wanted.
yeah they have to buy out of their contract because the military thinks that they become to much of a flight risk when they have that much money
my dh said they discharge you
USCGBoxerMom 03-18-2007, 10:00 PM The whole buying out thing makes no sense. What if the guy does not want to buy out...do they discharge him or let him stay and serve?
cassie 03-18-2007, 10:00 PM so if you are an heir to a fortune can you not join? :shrug
I would go on a HUGE shopping spree; buy my parents a bunch of land and pay off their bills and build them a house; save the majority of it; invest a little; donate some. :whew
USNFFG52 03-18-2007, 10:16 PM I think that is crap but I see the flight risk thing too. I mean what if you donated it all? Then you are no longer a millionaire then I am wondering if you would be able to stay in. That is one thing I know my wife would do is donate it to charities if there was a remote chance of her staying in the Navy. I would support that decision too because the Navy was her dream to be in and now that she is in we just keep pushing on and go for everything she wants and I support her in every military/career goal she has set and help her achieve that so I think the $$$$ would not make us happy.
BUT it would pay off bills though, lol.
my dh said you used to have a choice to stay in or not (at least with the navy) and since some guy got sent to captains mast and they were gonna reduce his pay or something, he just whipped out his checkbook and said how much is this gonna cost to go away or something like that. people would just be able to buy their way out of punishments
amandalaine 03-18-2007, 10:58 PM my dh said you used to have a choice to stay in or not (at least with the navy) and since some guy got sent to captains mast and they were gonna reduce his pay or something, he just whipped out his checkbook and said how much is this gonna cost to go away or something like that. people would just be able to buy their way out of punishments
Silly man...if he could do that, why would he care about a pay reduction? :giggle
I guess if someone wanted to stay in they could always keep the money in an acct without their name on it...like just their spouse's.
Donna 03-18-2007, 11:03 PM hehe... that is why my mom plays for me! LOL
I never knew that..thanks for the info everyone. We both don't play the lottery but it's good to know!

DH also said if the spouse wins they would discharge them too. we were doing lottery here at work and i asked him what would happen if we won and he said they would discharge him
DakotaCowgirl 03-19-2007, 12:55 PM I don't think it is fair for them to discharge because of a lottery. Would a real job fire someone because of it?
If we won, I would pay off bills, take the extended pay option (payout over 30 years), pay off my parents bills. I would double our 10% tithes to 20% and give it to the church to build. Put the rest into 1-5 year bonds and roll them over when they come due.
SezzySue 03-19-2007, 12:58 PM I know it has to do with having a better life outside the military. its very easy when you have that much money.
I would move to GA, buy a home, help my family financially, take a vacation to somewhere tropical, an african safari, build a studio, but some land, and adopt a child. Then save some. Who needs that much money donate a TON of it.
Jennifer 03-19-2007, 01:23 PM It's considered a change of lifestyle-if you inherited a huge amount of money, they could discharge you too.
Ashnbri 03-19-2007, 01:40 PM My DH told me that someone he knew won alot of money and the military wanted to honorably discharge him (like they take it as if you win all that money you might not have the "Drive" to do your job and since your life is usually depended on each other...) But he didn't want to get out so he put it in an account that he couldn't touch the money until so many years...I have no clue what it was called..so they didn't discharge him until he won again a good amount and he decided it was meant for him to get out lol
Elizabeth 03-19-2007, 04:40 PM Is this written somewhere??? I'd be interested to see it...
Gunnersgirl 03-19-2007, 05:27 PM I would buy my dh out of the Navy!
If I won I would pay off all bills, set up a trustfund for my dd and an education fund.
Buy a villa in Portugal
Travel
Invest wisely and live off the interest.
NavyChiefs_Wife 03-19-2007, 06:41 PM I don't know if I'd buy my DH out of the military since he only has 7 years left, it would be up to him if we bought him out or not. I'd pay off all my bills, buy myself and DH a new vehicle, pay off my parents bills and give them a lump sum, give my MIL a lump sum, build my dream house, put money away for my kids to go to college, travel the world, and maybe get some plastic surgery.

My DH made is sound like you have no choice whether to get out or not, they just discharge you.
s. rosa 03-19-2007, 07:46 PM my df says that they wouldn't discharge him and he couldn't buy out his contract..but he's in the army, i don't know if that's any different or he's just pretending to know stuff he doesn't, he likes to do that..
i know i'd set aside a certain amount for college, buy my dream car, build our dream house, donate a bunch to the humane society, go on a big nice vacation somewhere, have laser eye surgery and scar removal...then invest the rest lol or hire my dad to invest it. it's fun to sit and think about!
VinnysGirl 03-19-2007, 07:58 PM See... DH and I have talked about this. He doesn't want to get out. He wants to continue his career for special forces so if we were to win, I would put the money in a couple different accounts under a family members name. Have it where I could access the account and move money as we needed it. Do the longer payout so we only get so much per year/month/week whatever and invest and pay things off. Set up ways for us to be comfortable for the rest of our lives. You could easily turn 500000 into 50000000 if you invest it right!! :D
