View Full Version : relicensing and renewing car/tags
Heather 03-21-2007, 01:13 AM My tags expire this month and I'd really like to just hold off on getting them renewed until next month when I go home to visit. Johns car is registered at my parents house and I'd like to do the same with my car. I twould just makes things 100xs easier. John seems to think if I take my car to WA and try to license it there they will make me pay taxes on it. We bought the car out right in Illinois and payed the taxes there. I don't understand why I'd have to pay taxes twice on the same thing. My car still has the Illinois plates since the tags weren't expired and now we live in CA. I don't exacty have a question Im just looking for input, advice or whatever.
For the record I know I should renew my tags before they expire. I know I can get stopped and ticketed for expired tags.
Callie 03-21-2007, 01:15 AM I believe that he is right. They do charge taxes when you change a tag over to another state.
Heather 03-21-2007, 01:20 AM taxes for the whole car or just the tags/plates?
Heather 03-21-2007, 12:10 PM anyone know anything more?
Mandi 03-21-2007, 12:54 PM I am on my way to switch our plates from Michigan to Oklahoma and I know that here in Oklahoma you have to pay the tax when you get the tags, but in Michigan, you roll it into your payment, which we already did. I will let you know more when I get home in a little while! They better not make up pay twice, or I will just renew them for Michigan again!!!
Jennifer 03-21-2007, 01:04 PM when we registered DH's car in Utah(originally maryland) it cost us nearly 200 because of taxes...
Donna 03-21-2007, 01:22 PM it all depends on the state law. i know when we switched from VA to south dakota plates on a truck we had. because it was still financed, we didnt have to pay the new taxes in SD. but as soon as it was paid off, we would have.
Jennygirl 03-21-2007, 01:41 PM We just registered our car here in WA, but its in his name, so we didnt have to pay extra ( i think there is a military thing)...But he also paid taxes in RI too...I think for our plates and tags it was like 86 bucks.

Try these links. It might help. As someone else said, being military it may be a little different.
Jennygirl 03-21-2007, 01:53 PM But I think the car has to be in the military personnels name.
Heather 03-21-2007, 02:05 PM Thanks so much. Im such a ninny when it comes to googling stuff. I never find what Im looking for. It sounds like I'll just have to pay taxes on the tags and plates not the car since I already own it.
I already have the mililtary expiration date on my license. Its really a nice thing to have.
Mandi 03-21-2007, 02:33 PM I just went in a registered our truck for oklahoma. We had already paid tax in michigan, so we didn't have to repay it here!! So instead of paying 184 to renew in Michigan, I just paid 60 here!!! They have a special renewal here for military, it is only 23 dollars a year to renew!! My dh just had to fill out a affidavit (sp) and have it notorized by an officer!
I hope that it is something similar for you guys too!!! Good Luck!
piggypunkinetta 03-21-2007, 02:57 PM I didn't have to pay taxes when I switch my plates for MI to CA. You do have to wait in line, then go get your car so they can look at it. They keep your old plates too.
SoldiersWifey25 03-27-2007, 10:48 AM I always thought there was some special military form you get from the JAG office that relieves you from having to pay an taxes in that state or something to that effect.

Hmm that may be worth looking into just in case they want me to pay taxes on the car. I really don't think they will though since the car was not bought in WA and taxes were already paid.
Berkley 03-27-2007, 01:02 PM in NC from what I've been told it doesn't matter if you're military or not you pay the taxes on the car. There are no exemptions. But that's from what I've been told. Our cars are both registered in TN. Wait no the fourrunner is NC b/c we bought it NC but once the year is up it's TN.
