View Full Version : My poor girl
Kaymara 03-31-2007, 10:15 AM Well Ashley had a Dr appointment today. What was orginially supposed to be a wellbaby check and shots turned into a sick baby checkup. Ashley has been having some eating issues on her formula. Basically not eating. she will average about 12oz a day....enough to keep her hydrated and its a struggle to get her to take that...The Dr thinks she is either having an issue with the cows milk formula or she has reflux. They aren't sure which. ( Brandi and I discussed it and I am agreeing with her. I really think its reflux...) So she has been switched to a soy formula over the weekend and a recheck on Monday. IF the issue resolves itself with the soy then she will have her wellbaby and shots Monday. If not then they will look at reflux issues and possibly medication or something. We'll see. She is gaining though and thats good. She was at 10lbs and 10oz today and 22 inches long. Since I am fairly certain its reflux I dunno what they'll do monday...guess we'll see
On another note....tell me if this is messed up....the dr wasnt sure of the problem so he got the LC to come look at her and check her suck even tho we no longer breastfeed. he figured she could see what she thought...She walks in the room and the first words out of her mouth are "Whats wrong with THAT babys head?" Freakin witch I was PISSED. Ash has a slightly flatter side on the top then the other. She was born that way and IMHO she is perfect and that to me was uncalled for. THEN when I got home she still wasnt eating when I switched to the Soy. So I called to see if it was normal and the nurse says "Well I will make you an appt for tomorrow (sat) I said well we have a followup on Mon and I was just wondering if it was normal for them to reject it cuz instead of her eating the measly 1oz at a time like before she wasnt eating anything. She says "Let me put it to you like this. I made the appt. Because if she keeps refusing to eat she wont make it until Monday" WTF. WHY would you say that?!?
So..anyway my day yesterday was shit and I KNOW on Monday they are gonna say reflux. Its been almost 24 hours on soy and although she is taking it a LITTLE better she is still not eating alot and still not wanting to eat really....
Ellen 03-31-2007, 10:22 AM :hugs I'm sorry you are having to deal with this. That lady was VERY insensitive - I would compain to her manager in a heartbeat. I hope you figure out what's going on with Ashley.
spikyfeline 03-31-2007, 10:33 AM Why are you so sure it's reflux? And she proubably isnt takeing the soy because it's diffrent.....my friends baby did that.....deffinitaly something to think about :yes

Because she has acidy sput up, she arches her back, screams in pain when you go to feed her, has wet burps, feeds better in a sitting up position etc
spikyfeline 03-31-2007, 10:34 AM Oh ok, just wondering.....I wish you luck
Caimbrie 03-31-2007, 10:36 AM Is she crying while she's eating?
Cameron had reflux pretty bad. he has on 2 meds for it.
I can't believe how rude they were to you. For a while when Wyatt was younger he would always turn his head to the same side so one side of his head was a little flat and I had to work on turning him (which worked) but the docs never said anything mean about it. Wyatt still has one ear that stick out a lot more than the other (just like daddy does :teehee) and if anyone was rude enough to say anything I'd smack them.

screaming while you feed her definitely sounds like reflux :yes
I went through hell with Cameon so I know how awful it is :(
Awww poor little babe. :hugs
I had a similar issue with my oldest, she would not take Soy formula AT ALL and the doc's kept telling me she was fine even though she was puking in the office.
I ended up giving her lactose free formula made from cow's milk. It was the only thing she would take. It made all the difference. I could not even lay her down but what she would start throwing up again.
Good luck! It's so hard when they are so little and all you are trying to do is keep food in them!
Kaymara 03-31-2007, 10:43 AM Yep she crys. Takes a couple of sucks and screams. I will give the soy over the weekend like they suggested but I really think its reflux. She has most symptoms of it and even they werent sure which but wanted to go this route first I guess. I feel awful for her and just want her to eat :sigh

The hypoalergenic formula didn't even do anything for my Cameron. The 2 meds are the only thing that helped. They gave him a med along with the Zantac that helped strengthen the muscle that keeps the acid down and I think that helped him get past it faster.

They want to rule things out before they put her on meds :( I went through weeks and weeks of hell before they put Cameron on the Zantac and Reglan.
I definitely agree with you and Brandi on the reflux. Did Brandi tell you how to prop her up to help with sleeping and to keep her really still after eating to help lessen the spit up?
No I didn't mean my daughter had reflux, she's lactose intolerant, I was just saying she would not take soy. ;)
Caimbrie 03-31-2007, 10:47 AM No I didn't mean my daughter had reflux, she's lactose intolerant, I was just saying she would not take soy. ;)
I gotcha
Kaymara 03-31-2007, 10:53 AM I guess its possible she is lactose intolerant but she doesnt vomit, no blood in the stool etc. I dunno. Like I said I will give the soy the weekend like they suggested so they cant tell me on Monday "well you didnt try it"
Yeah I prop her up, keep her still, even the Dr told me to keep her upright for at least 30 minutes after eating. Which works cuz I burp her oin my shoulder and then I just leave her upright for a bit.
This really bites. I hate being worried and the fact she doesnt it makes me sick with worry. I am writing down oz amounts to take with me on Monday. So far since midnight she has eaten:
1oz at midnight (hubby woke her up to eat otherwise she wouldnt of woken for awhile)
2oz at 3am (I woke her to eat other wise she wouldnt of woken)
2.5oz at 630am
1oz at 830
So its a little better but not much at all....its 10 am now and she will likely only eat 1 or 2 oz in a bit..if that then she will crash for her 3 hour nap and eat nothing...
Poor baby girl. I hope she feels better soon. That doesnt sound like fun for either of you.
And what a rude Dr. I swear, I dont know what has happened in the medical world, but geeze.... there is no more bedside manner is there. :no
Donna 03-31-2007, 11:55 AM Sounds like reflux to me as well. I know when we first switched Chris from regular to soy, he wouldnt take it at first. It tastes and smells different. Eventually she will get hungry enough and start at least back to how she was taking the regular stuff and then it should get better. If not, she will definately need the meds.
I cant believe that they talked to you like that. I would complain to their boss or patient rep. I dont know if you guys go to civi or MTF. But I would def be bitching about how you were talked to!!!!!!
mary79 03-31-2007, 12:13 PM my son also has reflux. If she is not vomiting it is probably silent reflux. I found a cool website that had the most information on it,it also has forums that you can ask other moms questions. http://www.infantreflux.org/
They probably put your daughter on soy because they are finding out allot of children that have reflux may have a milk protein intolerant and 60% of them will also have soy intolerance. It is called MSPI.
RockstarMom 03-31-2007, 12:25 PM :sadeyes Poor Ashley. I hope she starts eating again soon.
Jennifer 03-31-2007, 12:54 PM poor ash! I hope she feels better soon!
mara_jade81 03-31-2007, 01:46 PM I'm sorry they were so rude to you :( Hope she starts eating better soon!
*~*Terri*~* 03-31-2007, 02:22 PM Wow, that was COMPLETELY insensitive of someone to say....I would have been shocked. I don't know what I would have done/said, but I promise you it wouldn't have been nice....
Sounds like reflux to me too. Does she have "crying times" like colic too or is she just crying through the feedings? I have 2 nutramigen babies, so I feel for you in the respect that they cry and you wish with everything that you have that you could fix it and they would stop crying.
:hugs to you though....and about her head, like you said, she's perfect to you and that is all that matters ;)
Kaymara 03-31-2007, 02:36 PM No colic. She only really cries when you try to feed her. I have been able to feed her small amounts today but only when she is drowsy which is how it was on the regular formula too. Since midnight she has drank 9.5oz and its 1:45 here now. So we'll see.
Thanks all
~Jess~ 03-31-2007, 03:02 PM Poor thing. I hope they figure out how to help her soon. That dr would have gotten a mouth full if she said that about my child. I swear people are so rude these days!!
Heather 03-31-2007, 04:03 PM I can't believe what they said to you. Thats totally uncalled for. Is there anyone you can complain too?
It does sound like she might mild reflux. My best friends baby has severe reflux. He got a feeding tube put into his small intestine now because it really is that bad.
I hope shes gaining weight and the different formula and some zantac is all she needs. I feel so awful for my friend and her baby. Its got be an awful thing to have watch your baby go though.
MichelleB 03-31-2007, 04:45 PM I can not believe the nurse was so rude :( I would complain in a second. She was unprofessional, and has not business being in the medical field if she wants to be that rude to people.
I hope the baby starts eating better soon Kristi! You guys will be in my thoughts.
Kristy, sorry that Ashley is sick, I can't offer any advise cause I know nothing about reflux, I was very lucky that Ryan never had any issues when I fed him either breastmilk or formula, but good luck and let us know how her appointment goes on Monday.
Kaymara 04-01-2007, 12:14 PM Well so far she seems to be doing better on the soy. She still fusses some at the bottle but not nearly like before. Her spit up is less too. So now I dunno. I guess we'll see what they say tomorrow. She topped out at 16.5oz of formula yesterday which is awesome for her. And today she is already at 9oz since midnight.
christymichelle 04-01-2007, 12:20 PM i am sorry. and how could someone say that to another person?? your in my thoughts :hugs:pray
Heather 04-01-2007, 08:01 PM Well so far she seems to be doing better on the soy. She still fusses some at the bottle but not nearly like before. Her spit up is less too. So now I dunno. I guess we'll see what they say tomorrow. She topped out at 16.5oz of formula yesterday which is awesome for her. And today she is already at 9oz since midnight.
Thats awesome. It sounds like she just needed a different formula.
USCGBoxerMom 04-01-2007, 08:49 PM I have no suggestions...just wishes for her to get better. I can not belive that office was so RUDE....you have every right to be pissed and I would have someone ass in a sling on Monday.

Yeah I Plan on bringing it up tomorrow. I was too worried about my daughter and also dumbfounded when it was orginially said to me. I will bring it up tomorrow tho. I've had the weekend to sit and fume about it.
That office is just rude tho. 1 of the corpsman measured my sons head and said very loudly "wow thats a huge head" I was like umm excuse me?? He says well his head is big. Ok and? Did you really need to say it and say it like that? What if he were older? You coulda hurt his feelings. He shut up...
