So for those who kiddos had a sensitivity to the cows milk formula and did better on Soy...Could your child ever go back on the cows milk formula? Or drink cows milk at a year old? We're fairly certain that was her problem as she is doing awesome right now on Soy thankfully. So was just wondering if this will be something she will always deal with or willg row out of

DD could not handel the regular stuff so we went to soy and was fine. She did fine when we switched her to regular milk. I thought it would be a problem for most of her life. I think it was the iron in the formula that had something to do with it. When I had DS I just started off with soy. I used Similac Soy for both.

DH and DD both had sensitivities with the cows milk protein in formula but are fine with regular milk. DS is truly allergic to milk (it's very, very rare for people to have true allergies to it and not sentivities) and can't drink cow's milk. He also couldn't do soy formula though.

My Ds had to switch to soy formula because his body couldn't process the other.BUt when he switched to milk he had no problem going to regular cows milk.BUt the soy formula did cause constipation for him.So be on the look out.

DS#1 had to be on Soy formula when he was a baby. We were able to slowly move him on to cow's milk after a year without a problem. But we weren't ever able to get him back on regular formula. It just didn't cooperate with his system at all.

They usually do grow out of it at around a year. Most reflux baby's have a immature digestive systems which can cause intolerances to the proteins in milk and 30% are also intolerant to soy and need a hypoallergenic formula. Right now your baby is in the honeymoon faze with the soy. It takes about One to two weeks to see the full effect to see it working. Then you will know if the soy is really helping.

All 3 of my boys had to be on soy formula. I just started giving them regular formula when they were close to a year old to help get them adjusted. They all would start to spit up a little more for a shirt time but they got used to it. :)

This is the part of the article about the correlation between food allergies and reflux.

Summary:
One of the world's leading experts, Professor Hugh Sampson from Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York, talks about his research into food allergies in children.

Norman Swan: We should then just look at what these symptoms are because one of the common problems you get in the first year of life is a baby who regurgitates a lot, sometimes associated with pain, where a child does seem in a lot of discomfort, what they call reflux; is this part of this picture?

Hugh Sampson: Yes, well one of the questions right now is how much of reflux in an infant is due to more functional factors and what may be due to allergy, or hypersensitivity.

Norman Swan: Now functional factors is medical code for - ?

Hugh Sampson: Due anatomical changes, the fact that the infant may have a loose juncture at the aesophagus and the stomach, that when the baby’s laying down the food will back up more easily, sometimes related to acid coming back up in and we’ll give them types of antacids to try to prevent the symptoms, and that will typically improve their irritability.

Norman Swan: Now are these babies in the first year of life?

Hugh Sampson: Yes. There actually was a study done in Italy looking at a population of infants under the age of one, who were referred to a centre with what was called gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and these investigators found that about 40% of these infants actually had symptoms that were provokable by milk challenge.

Norman Swan: And are these bottle-fed babies?

Hugh Sampson: They can be breast-fed or bottle-fed. And one of the things we’re seeing in several of these gastro-intestinal disorders is the reactions to proteins that are passed in maternal milk.

Norman Swan: And is this the same five food groups, that they are commonly allergic to, or is it broader?

Hugh Sampson: Well it depends on which type of gastro-intestinal allergy you’re talking about. There’s one called food protein induced proctocolitis where the baby will have gross blood in the stool but otherwise look to be doing very well. That’s typically due to milk or soy protein passed in maternal milk while breast feeding or if they happen to be bottle fed.

When I was a baby my mom went through breast milk to formula to soy to some expensive one before I'd eat anything. I wouldnt take any of them and when I did they went right through me or I'd spit it up. 24 years later we found out its Celiac and I cant have wheat, oat, barely and rye. Its easy to control when you get the hang of it.

My 4 and 2 year old are both on Lactose free milk. Yeah the really expensive shit. They can have small amounts of cheese or ice cream, etc but it has to be small amounts.

For me it's just easier to say my kids are allergic to milk rather than " My kids have a sensitivity to lactose and therefore can only eat tiny amounts while comsuming mainly lactose free products." even though I get slammed all the time for it cause they are *really* allergic. :rolleyes

I'm the same way. I've built up my tolerance where I can now drink 1 C of skim milk IF I eat a lot of other stuff before/after. I also use the lactaze pills a lot to try and compensate. My tolerances have grown as I got older, at one point I couldn't even eat the cheese on a burrito from taco bell without getting horribly sick.

The lactaid pills stopped working for me........I'm terrible man, like I buy most of my food from health food stores, because most stuff has lactose in the additives in things, like they'll list the additives but they wont list whats in the additives and organic things don't have additives so I have now choice.....Ever been hospitalized because of it? I have.

No, but I also know what foods make me ill and stay far away from them. I don't drink soda's, I don't eat things with too many artificial flavorings, etc. I don't eat a ton of junk unless I make it and know the dairy content.

I have for Celiacs..it was horrible, i spent half of my childhood in the hospital; and went to the ER on a beef allergy, it made my throat close up.

www.celiac.com its a gluten 'intolerance' that when you consumer or use gluten it breaks down the villi in your intestines causing your body to not absorb any vitamins, minerals or anything else. Food will go straight though so fast it could make your head spin too. I break out in a red bumpy itchy rash when it touches my skin now :(

Ethan was on soy formula.
I didn't transition him into cow's milk immediately. We transitioned to Soy milk around 11 months. Then around 13 or 14 months I transitioned him onto Lactaid whole milk than around 16 months onto regular whole milk. It was a slow transition, so I didn't rush anything. :)
So far, he's perfectly fine with it!!!

My dad is lactose intolerant and just RECENTLY discovered that his body can tolerate SKIM milk. I bet my mom is pissed that they didn't discover that sooner to save $$$$$ from all the Lactaid milk they were buying...LOL!!
I kept suggesting Lactaid pills, but they never listened to me....haha!
