NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (AP) -- Five fifth-grade students face criminal charges after authorities said four of them had sex in front of other students in an unsupervised classroom and kept a classmate posted as a lookout for teachers.

The students were arrested Tuesday at the Spearsville school in rural north Louisiana, authorities said. Two 11-year-old girls, a 12-year-old boy and a 13-year old boy were charged with obscenity, a felony. An 11-year-old boy, the alleged lookout, was charged with being an accessory.

"After 44 years of doing this work, nothing shocks me anymore," said Union Parish Sheriff Bob Buckley. "But this comes pretty close."

Authorities said the incident happened March 27 at the school, which houses students from kindergarten through 12th grade. A high school teacher normally watches the fifth-grade class at the time, but went to an assembly for older students and the class was inadvertently left unattended, Buckley said. The class, which had around 10 other students, was alone for about 15 minutes, he said.

"When no teacher showed up, the four began to have sex in the classroom with the other elementary students in the classroom with them," he said.

It took a day for authorities to find out about the incident. A student who had been in the class told a high school student about it the next day, Buckley said. The student told a teacher, and school officials notified the sheriff's office. Detectives began questioning students Thursday.

Now not to be blunt but the lil boys prob. just pissed and thought they came. This is so sad but this happened before in a town up from me. The lil boy said he did it because the little girl wanted to have a baby. :sigh

And this is precisely why sex education needs to be taught in school, not just abstinence. Being born and raise in North Louisiana (not far from Spearsville actually), abstinence is taught and that's all there is to it. rural "country", old fashioned I should say don't think about it so it doesn't happen, so to speak.


Side note... the school is at fault a bit because no one was watching these 5th graders. The kids need to be taught a lesson as well though because that is rediculous!

I agree! I think the school should be punished as well..I mean we trust them to supervise our kids and they let this happen...I understand she had somewhere ele to be, but the principal should have gotten a sub or atleast had a gym teacher or some adult just sit with them.

Sad, but doesn't surprise me. I worked at a summer camp several years... we had to get rid of a caboose on the playground cause kids would try to sneak off and have sex in it. I had my first kiss in that caboose, a week before my 14th birthday, but never sex! There really is no innocence anymore.

Agreed!! At that age I had no idea what sex was and was too shy to even think of kissing a boy! That story disgusts me and I agree that the school should be punished as well! If I were one of those 5th graders parents, I would be outraged!!

Not surprised that 5th graders are having sex, because unfortunately it's becoming more and more common. But the way they went about it is shocking.

Better sex education needs to be taught. When I was that age they stuck us in a room and made us a watch a very outdated movie on the subject which said nothing besides abstaining from sex. In today's world abstinence should not be priority. Kids are going to have sex whether you like it or not. It needs to be talked about no matter how uncomfortable adults or parents are.

I wouldn't say it's the norm, but it's absolutely becoming more common for younger kids to be having sex. It has to do with the area you live in and what the kids are taught on the subject.

Yet another reason why I don't want to send my daughters to public schools. It's so sad and pathetic its not even funny. What the hell are 5th graders doing in a classroom unsupervised in the first place? And what the fuck are parent's teaching their kids? (or obviously not teaching their kids).
