How many of you have power of attorney for you spouse? Is it useful? Have you had any problems using it? Do you have power for everything or just certian things?

I had one when dh was deployed. I had to use it quite often cause I was getting stuff ready to move and such. I had just a general POA, so I am not sure what it entitles. I didn't have a single problem using it, I had to fax it once to a credit card company to close one of dh's accounts, but as soon as they got it, the account was closed.

A POA is a must have. It's the most important document to have when he's deployed. I have a general POA which covers just about everything. Sometimes you have to have a more specific POA but for the most part the general one is good for everything.

I have one now since dh is deployed. We have a general and then 3 specific ones just to be safe. I have had to use it a few times so far and he has only been gone a month and a half.

I have one because my husband works pretty far from where we live so he can never be in town to sign papers during business hours. I used it to sign the purchase and sale agreement on our house just a couple of weeks ago. I've also used it when he was deployed to sign his checks and get them deposited. It's been very useful.

Even though i was on the deed and loan in Va I had to have it to do anything with the house.
I also had to have a specific to DEPOSIT :rolleyes or income Tax Checks for the past 3 years
all of our vehicles etc...
Oh and a specific for PSD !!!

I have a POA and never had a problem with it. I have a general POA,a PSD POA, and had one for taxes but used it already :).. If I need anything else when dh is gone I go to Squadron and talk to them up there. They know us so I don't have a problem getting things when I need them.

Ive seen the papers at stores do we just buy one and fill it out? Do we have to take it to a notery or a laywer? What kind of specific ones have you guys needed?

You dh can do it on base. You have to have it noterized or it won't work.
I usually get general, PSD and that is it. Some have others and some are content with just the general POA..

Go to legal they will take care of everything
But you need to find out from your lenders etc.. If a general is good enough

I have a general POA, I've never had to use it though, but I like having it just in case something comes up.

thanks for all the info. I dont see any reason why I'll need one right now I was just wondering because there is a paper that needs signed and the lady asked if I have POA. Im in Washington and the paper is in Illinois so theres nothing I could do anyway. We'll take care of it soon though. I think we may have a need for it some time and it would be good to have.

I think you need it more once you have more assets
I never used mine until we moved to VA
He had been in for 8 years by then. We owned everything under the sun so we had more reason to need it.
But it is a very good idea to have one just in case

I had a general one whne dh was on deployment last year. I needed it his sister was staying with us and she totaled his car.:rolleyes

I don't have one now, but then again dh is on shore duty..so I really don't need it right now anyways

I have a POA and have use it. ;) It comes in handy. I had to handle our move and there is no way I could have done it with out it. It is safer to have one if he is leaving. You never know what you might have to handle on your own ;)

Before he goes on Deployment the command makes them get a POA. If something comes up and you need help from navy relief they can't give you money without one. I always have one when DH is gone it does work for lots of things, I find it funny that you can liqudate ones assets with a general POA but can't get into PPV housing with one.

Every time hubby leaves for more than a week or two, he gets me a general, and every special that I could possibly need. I usually have a binder with them all in it......LOL.

I have one and I love it. I can take care of housing, pay, banking, car, etc when i need to with it. I dont have to wait for DH to take time off to go deal with something or for him to get back. I have had mine since even before we were married since we lived together and had joint finances.
