My neighbor was saying something to me about how the travel office on base can get you cheaper plane tickets and stuff like that, is that true?

sometimes, but it's usually difficult to get through(according to my husband).

Sometimes. I usually have better luck scouring the internet or going through AAA.

because most of teh time they are busy dealing with travel arrangements for PCSing or deployments or R&R, etc.

It maybe different at each base....but at Pearl Harbor....all the "official" travel is done through the SATO office.

For leisure PERSONAL travel ~ it is Travel Connections. They are generally NOT busy at all.

Often times you can et great deals on tickets....other times it is cheaper to go online. When I have needed to plan a trip...I look online first to get an idea and then go to the Travel Connections ~ so I have an idea of what the "going" rate is.

Here we don't have a leisure travel office at all. We only have sato and thats for official military business.

We only have SATO here also, we haven't been back to visit the states in awhile so I have no clue where to look for cheap tickets!
