i'm confused as to how to make sure i get it all taken care of before i go on leave.
i've googled it and read some of the info but... if people could share their experiences, that would be great

I only know that it varies from state to state and that California has a better plan than Il. Good luck.

Your doctor will give you a paper and usually your work gives you a form he needs to fill out (usually at around 37 weeks or so, earlier if you have complications) saying that you can't work anymore, it will have a date on it as the start date and then usually it will just say until 6 weeks post-partum. You take such paper back to your work, they file it, and boom...maternity leave.
Now, not all jobs offer it (although they should). Disability works the same way. Your job should supply the forms, you take them to your doc to fill out. It's been a long time since I went on maternity leave, but that's pretty much how it was back then.

yep, claudia got it right. Right now I am filling out the family and medical leave act papers and then when i start the dr. has to fill them out.
as far as disablility...unfortunetly i don't qualify so I am not positive how it works. I'd assume somewhat of the same way :dunno

CA State Disability will usually pay you about 3/4 of your original income for 4 weeks before and 6 weeks after your due date for a vaginal delivery with no complications. Usually your doctor's office can provide all of the necessary forms and in some cases, file them for you for a small fee ($10 or so). If not, you can go to edd.ca.gov and get the forms from there. There is a 1 week waiting period and then you will start receiving your weekly benefit amount. When your disability is up, you will automatically receive the CA Paid Family Leave forms which can extend your benefits for (I believe) and additional 4-6 weeks...I am not certain on that one but you can call EDD and they will give you all of the info or you can find it online. You can even find your weekly benefit amount if you know (or have access) to your last eligible 12 months of gross earnings (see the qulifying income section as to when the 12 month starts/ends). I have never been to a provider that didn't have these forms available so I would see your doctor first. Good luck!

Jenny you should have family and medical leave act. it's a government policy(no you don't get paid for it) BUT it just says you are guarenteed not to lose your job during your maternity leave and your job will be there when you return. I know for mine I can take up to 12 weeks.
