I read many places that you aren't supposed to clean out the cat litter box when you are pregnant, because of something that is in cat feces..... does the same apply to dogs? Like taking dogs outside to go potty, are you allowed to pick up after them? Is it overall feces or just cats? TIA

6. Pregnant women shouldn't change cat litter.

True. Due to a virus in cat feces called Toxoplasmosis.

Explanation: This virus can be very harmful to the pregnancy. But recognize that contact with kitty litter is not limited to changing the cat litter box. Since a cat walks on its litter, the virus can be tracked anywhere a cat walks, including its paws. Due to this, all contact with the cat must be limited and the house must be kept extra clean. Also, because much of our produce is grown outdoors where cats and other animals come in contact with it — even if it's organic — recognize that this virus may be present on fruits and vegetables.

It is because of taxoplasmis and all warm blooded mammals can have it. Usually if you grew up around animals you might have already been exposed and it takes a few days for it to get to the infectious stage so if you clean the litter box everyday you shouldn't get it. But I still wouldn't clean it..lol. But cleaning up after dogs should be okay as long as you wash your hands right after and maybe use gloves.

That would kind of apply even if you're not pregnant... wouldn't it? :lol

I asked my ob about it after I found out I was preggo. He said that it only applies to outdoor cats b/c of the toxoplasmosis and it is rare to occur in indoor kept cats. He told me to wash my hands w/ antiseptic soap and I would be fine. Before I was wearing a painter's mask to clean the litterbox!!!
