RICHMOND-- Fort Bend County Sheriff's detectives are investigating the death of a 4-week-old infant who reportedly died after the child's father rolled over on the baby while sleeping.
The 34-year-old man fled when deputies arrived on the scene and was later arrested after being stunned with a Taser, sheriff's spokeswoman Terriann Carlson said this morning.
Carlson said police received a call about 4:30 a.m. from New Orleans from relatives of the man.
"A father had his infant in bed with him and it appears he allegedly smothered the child by rolling on top of the baby," Carlson said.
When deputies arrived at the house in the 2200 block of Brushemeade the man got into his car and fled.
A short chase started and deputies used a spike device to disable the car at Heatherton Way at Cool Water Drive in the New Territory development.
He was arrested and placed in the Fort Bend County Jail. An autopsy has been ordered.
