View Full Version : itchy and scratchy?
Jennie 05-03-2007, 02:46 PM Brownie has been itching and scratching and biting for weeks now and I don't know why. It started when we went on leave and we figured it had something to do with the altitude changings and such. We did spray some flea medicine on her, which I'm starting to think she may have had some reaction, but it was only used once over a month ago and she's had a couple baths since then. I don't think it's her shampoo because we've been using it for awhile and she's never had any problems with it. She's scratching, gnawing so much that she's making herself bleed, she's covered in scabs, and her paws are now bright red. Any ideas on what could be going on or what I can do to help?! TIA.
Lilithdrff 05-03-2007, 02:49 PM Could be Mange. I would take her to the vet, she'll probably need a spray to stop the itching on the skin, and possibly cream in case she has an infection.
VinnysGirl 05-03-2007, 02:55 PM I agree. It could very well be an infection or mange. Bathing her may be drying out her skin as well. You may need a puppy conditioner for her skin to stay moist. I'd get her into the vet though because if she's got scabs it could easily get infected!!!
USCGBoxerMom 05-03-2007, 03:02 PM If she is gnawing at her feet it could be food allergies as well. You need to get her in for a skin scraping nonetheless and see what it is.
Jennie 05-03-2007, 03:10 PM If it's mange, wouldn't the cats get infected too?
I looked her down and her back paws inbetween her toes are red and when she's laying on her back, the bottom half of her is red.
VinnysGirl 05-03-2007, 03:17 PM It could very well be an allergy to something, but I would get her checked... if it's Red mange you can get it in the form of scabes... not pleasant.. my mom had it after we got our lab when she was a puppy and she had to put this horrible cream all over her body and itched sooooo bad. You are preggo so I would be REALLY careful! Get her in as soon as you can and wash your hands and body very well when you are showering. I'd try to limit contact with her if you can... it will be hard I know, but you don't want to get the human form of red mange.
:hugs
Jennie 05-03-2007, 03:25 PM Well shit. We'll get her looked at as soon as we can. What other signs should I look for until we can get her seen?
PvtWinkiesgirl 05-03-2007, 05:14 PM Demodectic mange is noncontagious, sarcoptic (red) mange is. Sarcoptic is obvious because the skin is very red, demodectic can be hard to notice at first, it starts with hair loss around the eyes, feet, and chin, then it spreads all over. They can also get scavies, another mite that will cause mange-like symptoms. Sounds to me like bad allergies, but if it is scavies or sarcoptic mange you will want her treated right away. :shrug Poor cookie, let us know what the vet says.
What kind of food is she eating? can you post any pics?
harrisonsdream 05-03-2007, 05:15 PM could be an allergy, try some oatmeal shampoo to soothe the itchiness.
Jennie 05-03-2007, 05:29 PM She eats Purina Healthy Morsels - the only food that she'll eat on a daily basis. When we took leave, she was on Purina Fit and Trim because they were out of Healthy Morsels, but she's eaten it before with no problems. She eats Meaty Bone brand bones, she's always been on them, although I noticed last night that she doesn't eat them as well as she used to. We gave her a Hartz dental bone about a month ago, but she only licked it a couple times and she wouldn't have anything to do with it.
The flea medicine we used was some body spray type thing. I don't remember exactly what it's called and we don't have it anymore, but it was in a green and white bottle and called natural defense or something along those lines. She's on Top Paw Oatmeal Shampoo.
I think that's everything she's on and what not. I'll take a pic, but I gotta find the cord to upload to the computer.
PvtWinkiesgirl 05-03-2007, 05:32 PM That stuff has a lot of filler and uncessary junk in it, she could have developed an allergy to something in there. Before switching foods, I would take her to the vet, though.
Jennie 05-03-2007, 05:36 PM All of that stuff does??
I'm worried about switching her food because she's so frickin picky, but we can try see if that helps any.
USCGBoxerMom 05-03-2007, 05:38 PM My thoughts exactly. The food you are feeding her is not ideal and could be causing the allergy if that is what it is. Food allergies are very difficult sometimes to fix due to ruling out what exactly it is she is allergic to.
If it is in fact allergies, she may need some antibiotics to clear up any infection and some steriods.
Good luck!! Poor puppy. DO NOT switch her food until she is seen by a vet though....food switches in allergy dogs can actually make the dog worse unless done properly.
Jennie 05-03-2007, 05:41 PM Alright..thanks ladies!
Jennie 05-03-2007, 05:50 PM I took some pictures, sorry they aren't all that clear.
The first 2 are the inside of her back legs and the last one is her belly.
